Calculation. Here, Papa T. is partitioning 2-digit numbers into
combinations of 10s and 1s.
Honest Joe and Marleen are playing with apples. This story song helps children understand
that there are three structures behind subtraction. Great for reasoning and understanding.
Number Bond has given two Sneaky Criminals 20 coins to share fairly. Pause the video at different points in the presentation
and explore the fact families represented in the tens frames.
What if Number Bond only had 16 coins?
Pause this video at different points to set up a problem solving challenge. E.g. at 0:18 we know that out of the 12 coins,
5 are in the left pocket. The calculation shown is 5 + ? = 12.
What calculation will be shown in
Part/Whole Model This free downloadable PDF document contains a range of Part/
Whole Models, including models that partition into 3 and 4 parts.

Tens Frame Bus The 10s Frame Bus is a powerful
tool for exploring and reasoning about number and simple calculation. The 10s Frame bus is accompanied by images of children sitting and standing on the bus, and also waiting at the bus stop.
Two buses provide a context for exploring bonds up to 20.
1-120 Number Grid This A1 laminated, double-sided poster shows every number from 1
to 120 in both numerals and Base 10. Great for modelling addition
and subtraction strategies.

Two children are adding or subtracting small numbers of bananas. Pretend each banana is worth 10p. That money calculations might be represented within each verse?
E.g. 3 bananas + 2 bananas = 5 bananas ... 30p + 20p = 50p.
This video reminds children of the Greater Than, Less Than
and the Equals signs. Use the tens imagery to explore different ways of expressing
each calculation.
This video explores adding 1 more picture to a set of pictures
that are stuck up on my door!
Pause at suitable point (e.g.
1:05) and reason about the numbers. Explore the story context using sets of pictures.

that will be helpful with this small step.
9: Add by making 10
10: Add a 2-digit and a 1-digit number - crossing 10
Pirate Captain Hugh and Pirate Captain Bert are trying to add two amounts of treasure. Verse
1 links with the previous small step. Verse 2 adds 18 and 6
together. Pause at 1:43 and explore potential strategies.
7: 10 more and 10 less
8: Add and subtract 10s
Farmer Pete is counting the eggs from his chickens. In this verse his 10 special hens lay one more egg each. How many eggs does
his now have?
Extend the use of the story context found in this video.
Pause the video and reason... if Farmer Pete’s had 20 chickens
instead of 10 chickens, how many eggs would there be at
the end of each verse? Use concrete resources.
Farmer Pete is counting eggs again. This time some are in the
hen house and others are laid in the barn. Discuss and explore
how Pete fills a full 10s frame egg box to help him calculate how many eggs there in each
verse.

14: Add two 2-digit numbers - crossing ten - add 1s & add 10s
Papa Titioning is adding two 2-digit numbers. The imagery mirrors the Base 10 materials and the story context helps children grasp basic column addition including regrouping /
exchanging.
11: Subtraction - crossing 10
12: Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number - crossing 10
The first two verses are addition problems. At 1:08 the problem
12-3 is introduced. The bananas are in groups of 5 - link
to a tens frame image. Explore how 3 could be partitioned into 2
and 1. Set up other examples.
Play the introduction - Papa Titioning has 64 logs. This video explores 2-digit by 2-digit subtraction, so pause the video at 0:29. What if Alice’s daddy only wants 8 logs... what do you
think he should do? Use Base 10 to visualise and reason.
Pirate Captain Hugh is teaching Pirate Captain Bert how to add by partitioning two 2-digit numbers. The partitions mirror
those in the formal strategy.
Note: The final verse crosses 10, so doesn’t fit with this small
step.
