Parish Mission Statement

We St. Ambrose Cathedral parish of the Diocese of Des Moines are a diverse community of the rich and poor, disadvantaged and hungry, young and elderly, visitors, and those seeking refuge. We are a Eucharistic community of many cultures. We strive for unity in our diversity expressing our love of God through prayer and worship, justice and service, the ministry of hospitality, and through catechesis, evangelization, and ecumenism. We pursue this mission faithfully by following the example of Jesus Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the gifts and talents of our faith community.

Prayer of St. Ambrose

Lord, teach me to see you, and reveal yourself to me when I see you.

For I cannot seek you unless you first teach me, nor find you unless you first reveal yourself to me.

Let me seek you in longing, and long for you in seeking.

Let me find you in love and love you in finding.

A Message From Father John:

Last Sunday afternoon, 51 young people from our faith community received the Eucharist for the first time. The excitement and joy on their faces were obvious. They approached the Lord’s Table with respect and reverence. We owe a debt of thanks to their catechists, Kay Crowley and Samol Thlang from our RE ministry and Nancy Walter from Holy Family School, along with the parents of the candidates who supported them in this stage of their faith journey. Thanks to Debbie Rohrer who assisted in preparing the ceremony, along with our mu- sic and ministers of hospitality, as well as those who prepared the reception after the mass. Our Confirmation can- didates will be confirmed during the 10:30am mass on Mother’s Day, May 13. Keep all those celebrating the Easter sacraments in prayer in these 50 days.

The in-depth study of our diocesan Catholic schools continues. I have spent endless hours in interviews for our Holy Family School and Dowling Catholic since I serve on their board of education. The challenging and necessary discussions will hopefully be enfleshed with practical and visionary recommendations that will allow our school system to thrive for the future. The findings of the study will be reported on June 21.

Pledges and paid gifts for the 2018 Diocesan Appeal continue to come in. Our goal is $93,702.00. We have received in paid pledges $23,555.00. This is very good since the Appeal began in early March. The April needy fund offered $2,427.70. Later this month we will take up the yearly 2

nd

collection for the Communications Campaign. Please read the Bishop’s letter in today’s bulletin. I continue to be grateful for all you do to share your treasure with the above collections and for your faithful tithing.

Today at the 10:30am mass, Bishop Pates will again confer the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” Award (“for the church and Pope”) to members of our diocese for their outstanding service to the church. They include: Robert and Janice Myers, members of our parish, Kyle and Sharon Krause, Stephen and Cathryn Lacy, Dennis and Constance Purdum, and Lawrence and Kathleen Zimpleman. Special welcome to them, their families and guests.

Today’s gospel from John finds Jesus telling his disciples “love one another.” This is one of the few gos- pel accounts where our Lord repeats his command to stress the importance and vitality of caring for each other in God’s name. That challenge is so necessary in today’s world. Thank you again for witnessing Christ’s love to others in so many “seen and unseen” ways. Your sincere devotion and affection for your families and each other puts me to shame. Know of my remembrance of you at the Lord’s Table and in my daily prayer. Enjoy the re- mainder of the resurrection season.

A blest 50 Easter days to all!
