WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE

, JULY 4TH, 2021

PASTORAL MESSAGE

Since it’s the Fourth of July, it may be a bit early to think about those unseasonably warm days in late September that are a bit of a tease before the leaves begin to fall, but imagine it’s one of those days and you are in the eighth grade. You’re siƫng in a classroom and the sun is coming through the windows making the room feel like an oven. You’re wearing your uniform, a long-sleeved navy blue oxford shirt with a plaid Ɵe and navy blue pants and it feels like torture. It’s Ɵme for history class, and you are learning the skill of note taking. You’re siƫng with your back in the chair because the teacher tells you posture is criƟcal when you’re taking notes and she may have a point. If you’re siƫng the way you want to sit, your head would be on the desk, and you’d fall asleep. The lecture had something to do with the Civil War. Normally this teacher is a masterful storyteller with a broad knowledge of history, but not that aŌernoon. She just went on and on, sounding like the teacher in a Charlie Brown television special whose only words are “Waw, waw waw waw waw…” You watch the clock, but it’s not your friend. Finally it’s about one minute before the class is about to end and the teacher says, “Tomorrow we’re going to hear all about nuns in the Civil War.” Darryl who was viewed by his classmates as quite the comedian blurts out “Load the cannons Sister and Įre away” and his sidekick Mike made a sound like that of a cannonball exploding. The teacher, who happened to be a Sister of Mercy, did not Įnd the comment all that funny, but that’s another story. The next day arrived but we never heard about nuns in the Civil War which is too bad. She must have forgot. Many years later I did learn a bit about the fascinaƟng story of women religious in the Civil War. I was visiƟng the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and when you walk into the Basilica, there is a museum featuring the history of the Daughters of Charity and the Sisters of Charity, the two orders St. Elizabeth founded. One of the exhibits features life sized photographs daƟng back to the Civil War showing Daughters of Charity removing the wounded from baƩleĮelds and serving as nurses. The Sisters of Mercy engaged in similar work. On the same day I visited Emmitsburg, I also traveled to GeƩysburg where I came across a statue commemoraƟng Father William Corby, a Holy Cross Father who later became the president of the University of Notre Dame. During the Civil War he was an army chaplain, and while his ministry was primarily for Catholic soldiers, he reached out to anyone who needed him regardless of faith. Since our Catholic faith encourages us to perform the corporal works of mercy, The Daughters of Charity, Sisters of Mercy, and chaplains reaching out to those in need may be expected, but this was also a Ɵme of open hosƟlity to Catholics, so we truly see the presence of Christ in a drasƟc situaƟon.

This weekend’s readings made me think a bit about Catholics in the Civil War as well as other situaƟons where the Catholic Church

in the United States has been a light. When July 4th falls on a

weekday, there are opƟonal readings that can be selected that reŇect graƟtude we should feel as we celebrate the Fourth of July. When the day falls on a Sunday, we use the readings of the day, which this year would be the readings of the Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year B. The readings are not exactly feel-good passages. The prophet Ezekiel is told he is to preach God’s word even though he will be rejected, St. Paul speaks about the “the thorn in his Ňesh,” his way of describing a cross he bears which causes much suīering, and Jesus returns home and is rejected by the people because he is too familiar. These readings hardly evoke

the celebratory feeling we should have on July 4th, but in some

ways, these readings may be exactly what we need to hear this year.

There is no quesƟon our naƟon is facing challenges as we

celebrate this July 4th and in many ways, the scripture readings for

the weekend encourage us to persevere. Our Catholic history in the United Sates can also help us in this regard. We oŌen think of the glorious days of Catholicism in the United States as the Ɵmes when parishes were the center of all aspects of life, Catholic elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universiƟes were large and strong, Catholic hospitals were known for cuƫng edge care, and Catholic social services were always available. However, our greatest eīorts may have happened in challenging Ɵmes and in quieter ways. Many people know of Father Michael McGivney as the founder of the Knights of Columbus, but what is lesser known is his Ɵreless work with immigrants, his strong belief in educaƟon, his support of workers, and his willingness to help anyone in need. St. Katherine Drexel founded the Blessed Sacrament Sisters and opened schools for African American and NaƟve American children at a Ɵme the Ku Klux Klan was rampant. In the darkest days of the Great Depression, Dorothy Day opened soup kitchens known as Houses of Hospitality. In some of our naƟon’s toughest Ɵmes, Catholics have been a bright light, or maybe more appropriate for

July 4th, Įreworks that light up the sky. Perhaps, as these great

Įgures of faith faced challenges they recalled Ezekiel trying to speak the truth to people who are not listening, St. Paul’s perseverance, or most especially Jesus doing his best in spite of a lack of faith on the part of others.

We should celebrate the Fourth of July. We should also take Ɵme to reŇect on our history, including our Catholic history, and keep in mind we are living in a country in need of healing due to divisions caused by poliƟcs, racial strife, economic dispariƟes, and a host of other issues. We also need to remember that as Catholics, we are called to be people of hope and we have good reason for hope, especially due to our faith in Jesus Christ and our desire to follow him as well, which is what we see in the powerful examples of great Catholic Americans.
