Tools: What’s Available?

HP Netserver/Server management strategy allows administrators to pick and choose the tools to manage their hardware, software and networks. Administrators may choose HP Toptools to manage hardware level issues. As needs change, network administrators may also leverage high-level enterprise system management platforms such as OpenView NNM, Computer Associates Unicenter® TNG™, Tivoli® Enterprise Management and NetView™.

In this guide, you will find a brief description of the tools available to manage HP Netservers and Servers, an overview on how these tools are installed, and where the software and documentation are located.

Hardware Monitoring and Troubleshooting

The HP Toptools suite of software is included on CD-ROM with every L and E Series Netserver and HP Servers such as tc3100 and tc6100. It should be installed to help you and your support provider monitor and troubleshoot your system. If you want the latest available version of HP Toptools, you may also download software and documentation from the Toptools website at:

http://www.hp.com/toptools

HP Toptools Device Manager is web-based management software designed to use a web server (a PC or server designated as the management server) to manage your networked devices (HP servers, desktops, notebooks, hubs, switches, and printers) from a single, easy-to-use interface. Information about your managed devices are served up on web pages that may be viewed from any PC client via a browser. HP provides automated discovery as well as consolidated alerts for all systems being managed. The Server component of HP Toptools Device Manager, in conjunction with Netserver/Server Agents, provides remote administration and monitoring of critical server components for quick troubleshooting and proactive management.

(6)

Chapter 1 HP Netserver Management Tools: What’s Available?

Included with the Netserver/Server Agents software is Automatic Server Restart (ASR) which can reboot your server in the event of a system hang.

HP Instant Toptools is a stand-alone, simple tool used to manage a single server. Instant Toptools provides a subset of information available through Toptools Device Manager and may be installed without installing the Netserver/Server Agents. Instant Toptools may be accessed from a PC client browser. Instant Toptools is ideal for administrators that may have a small number of servers to support or have contracts with support providers who have network or direct access to the server. Instant Toptools is currently only supported on

Netservers/Servers running Microsoft Windows NT or 2000, Linux, and Netware. HP Toptools Auto Alert is a Windows application that runs on one or more designated management consoles. Toptools Auto Alert, in conjunction with Netserver/Server Agents, provides up/down status of servers, proactively notifies you of server events and provides advice on what to do when a problem occurs. Toptools Auto Alert may be used in conjunction with Instant Toptools or Toptools Device Manager (with the Server component).

The table below lists the capabilities of each component of the HP Toptools software suite provided with your HP Netserver/Server. This list may vary depending on your Netserver/Server model, installed NOS and installed accessories. Remote Server Management

In addition to HP Toptools, each HP Netserver/Server system includes remote management tools that provide you with access to your HP Netserver/Server regardless of the system state.

Integrated Remote Assistant, included on L-Series and the newer tcXXXX HP Servers, offers emergency modem access to the server. It can page you when a problem arises and allow you to access the system event log, redirect the console to your location, and even power cycle the server.

cycle, or reset their server via a Windows or DOS client attached to the network. When used in conjunction with the Integrated RA, this option provides an administrator with a diverse suite of powerful remote management tools. Toptools Remote Control Card PCI accessory offers much of the same

functionality as Integrated RA, but extends this by offering emergency access over the network with an easy-to-use web interface. Supported only for L-Series Netservers that include the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). It can notify you when a problem arises via a page or email and allows you to access the system event log, redirect the console to your location, and even power cycle the server. In addition, it integrates fully with HP Toptools Device Manager and allows you to set configurations and user account information on several cards at once.

Remote Console feature, included on most E-Series Netservers, allows remote dial-in and control of the server either via console redirection or access to utilities and diagnostics available on the server’s HP Utility Partition.

Symantec pcAnywhere remote control software is included with most E and L Series Netservers. This solution provides Netservers/Servers running Microsoft Windows NT or 2000 full Windows graphics console redirection over the network or modem to a remote console.

Remote Management Feature List

The table below lists the capabilities of each remote management offering. This list may vary depending on your Netserver/Server model, installed NOS and installed accessories. For more details, see the "HP Netserver Management Products" datasheet (under Information Library | Datasheets) on the Netserver website (www.hp.com/go/netserver).

Integration to Enterprise Management Platforms

IT departments who wish to manage their entire network infrastructure from a common set of tools select an Enterprise Management Platform, such as HP OpenView Network Node Manager, Computer Associate’s Unicenter TNG, or Tivoli Enterprise Management and NetView. These solutions allow the IT manager to manage IT resources from end to end and provide the control to make service level agreements with end user departments. HP Netservers/Servers are easily managed by these management platforms because Toptools integrates into those platforms. The software that "bridges" Toptools to many top enterprise management platforms is available from the web at www.hp.com/toptools. Once the integration software is installed, features include:
