THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST June 27 & 28, 2021

Welcome to Worship! A funeral is a particularly difficult time for a family. It was no different in Jesus’ day. In the Gospel we see Jesus at the beginning of a funeral ruining it – in a good way. The day is coming when He will ruin all funerals and give eternal life to all who have ever been given temporal life. For believers, that eternal life will be in heaven.

Please register your attendance and communion in the Record of Fellowship.

A Nursery is available below the entrance on Walnut St. and a Comfort Room is in the Atrium. The Nursery in not staffed at this time.

All Adult Bible Classes and Sunday School are recessed till Rally Day.

Cell Phones: Please remember to silence cell phones and electronics during worship.

Holy Communion will be offered at the 9:00 & 7:00 service. The Common Cup will be offered to those who desire it and will be cleansed and rotated between persons. If you prefer an individual cup, please take one from the tray. Wine with alcohol removed is in the tray center. If you are not a confirmed member of the Lutheran Church, please contact an elder or pastor before communing. Hearing devices are available from an usher.

THE PRELUDE: “Before You, Lord We Bow” -Culli

THE HYMN: “Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness”

Hymn 849

1 Praise the One who breaks the darkness With a liberating light;

Praise the One who frees the pris’ners, Turning blindness into sight.

Praise the One who preached the Gospel Healing ev’ry dread disease,

Calming storms, and feeding thousands With the very Bread of peace.

2 Praise the One who blessed the children With a strong, yet gentle, word;

Praise the One who drove out demons With the piercing, two-edged sword.

Praise the One who brings cool water To the desert’s burning sand;

From this Well comes living water, Quenching thirst in ev’ry land.

3 Let us praise the Word Incarnate, Christ, who suffered in our place.

Jesus died and rose victorious That we may know God by grace.

Let us sing for joy and gladness, Seeing what our God has done;

Let us praise the true Redeemer, Praise the One who makes us one.

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God

our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us

forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth.

P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C

and You forgave the

iniquity of my sin.

THE CONFESSION OF SINS

P O almighty God, merciful Father,

C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I

have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal

punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I

pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter

sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful

to me, a poor, sinful being.

THE ABSOLUTION

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant

of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the

command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father

and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

THE KYRIE

C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

P Glory be to God on High,

C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee.

we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.

O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;

O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.

Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,

art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY: (We pray together)

(4)

Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

THE WORD OF THE MONTH: (We speak together) For whoever does the will of God,

he is my brother and sister and mother. Mark 3:35

THE FIRST READING:

Lamentations 3:22–33

The steadfast love of the L

ORD

never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are

new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The L

ORD

is my portion,” says my soul,

“therefore I will hope in him.” The L

ORD

is good to those who wait for him, to the soul

who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the L

ORD

. It is

good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Let him sit alone in silence when it is

laid on him; let him put his mouth in the dust—there may yet be hope; let him give his

cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults. For the Lord will not cast

off forever, but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the

abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of

men.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!

THE EPISTLE READING:

2 Corinthians 8:1–9, 13–15

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the

churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their

extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave

according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free

will, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this,

not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of

God to us. Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete

among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in

knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of

grace also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that

your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though

he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become

rich. . . . I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a

matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that

their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written,

“Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no

lack.”

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!

made well and live.” And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and

thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for

twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that

she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus

and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch

even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up,

and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in

himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and

said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd

pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see

who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and

trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her,

“Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your

daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said,

Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no

one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to

the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and

wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a

commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.

But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were

with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her,

“Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl

got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately

overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this,

and told them to give her something to eat.

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: (sing) Praise be to Thee, O Christ!

THE HYMN: “Your Hand, O Lord, in Days of Old” Hymn 846

1

Your hand, O Lord, in days of old Was strong to heal and save;

It triumphed over ills and death, O’er darkness and the grave.

To You they came, the blind, the mute, The palsied and the lame,

The lepers in their misery, The sick with fevered frame.

2 Your touch then, Lord, brought life and health, Gave speech and strength and sight;

And youth renewed and frenzy calmed Revealed You, Lord of light.

And now, O Lord, be near to bless, Almighty as before,

In crowded street, by beds of pain, As by Gennes’ret’s shore.

3 O be our great deliv’rer still, The Lord of life and death;

(6)

To hands that work and eyes that see Give wisdom’s healing pow’r

That whole and sick and weak and strong May praise You evermore.

THE SERMON: “How to Ruin a Funeral”

+++ 9:00 & 7:00 THE NICENE CREED:

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

524 How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds

1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds In a believer’s ear!

It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, And drives away our fear.

2 It makes the wounded spirit whole And calms the heart’s unrest; ’Tis manna to the hungry soul And to the weary, rest.

3 Dear name! The rock on which I build, My shield and hiding place; My never-failing treasury filled With boundless stores of grace.

4 O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend, My Prophet, Priest, and King, My Lord, my life, my way, my end, Accept the praise I bring.

5 How weak the effort of my heart, How cold my warmest thought! But when I see Thee as Thou art, I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

6 Till then I would Thy love proclaim With ev’ry fleeting breath; And may the music of Thy name Refresh my soul in death!

461 I Know That My Redeemer Lives

1 I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, He lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living head.

2 He lives triumphant from the grave; He lives eternally to save; He lives all-glorious in the sky; He lives exalted there on high.

3 He lives to bless me with His love; He lives to plead for me above; He lives my hungry soul to feed; He lives to help in time of need.

4 He lives to grant me rich supply; He lives to guide me with His eye; He lives to comfort me when faint; He lives to hear my soul’s complaint.

5 He lives to silence all my fears; He lives to wipe away my tears; He lives to calm my troubled heart; He lives all blessings to impart.

6 He lives, my kind, wise, heav’nly friend; He lives and loves me to the end; He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing; He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

7 He lives and grants me daily breath; He lives, and I shall conquer death; He lives my mansion to prepare; He lives to bring me safely there.

8 He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same; Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives: I know that my Redeemer lives!

738 Lord of All Hopefulness

1 Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:

Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

2 Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe: Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

(8)

4 Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:

Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

571 God Loved the World So That He Gave

1 God loved the world so that He gave His only Son the lost to save, That all who would in Him believe Should everlasting life receive.

2 Christ Jesus is the ground of faith, Who was made flesh and suffered death; All then who trust in Him alone Are built on this chief cornerstone.

3 God would not have the sinner die; His Son with saving grace is nigh; His Spirit in the Word declares How we in Christ are heaven’s heirs.

4 Be of good cheer, for God’s own Son Forgives all sins which you have done; And, justified by Jesus’ blood, Your Baptism grants the highest good.

5 If you are sick, if death is near, This truth your troubled heart can cheer: Christ Jesus saves your soul from death; That is the firmest ground of faith.

D 6 Glory to God the Father, Son, And Holy Spirit, Three in One! To You, O blessèd Trinity, Be praise now and eternally!

643 Sent Forth by God’s Blessing

1 Sent forth by God’s blessing, Our true faith confessing, The people of God from His dwelling take leave.

The Supper is ended. O now be extended The fruits of this service in all who believe.

The seed of His teaching, Receptive souls reaching, Shall blossom in action for God and for all.

His grace did invite us, His love shall unite us To work for God’s kingdom and answer His call.

2 With praise and thanksgiving To God ever-living, The tasks of our ev’ryday life we will face.

Our faith ever sharing, In love ever caring, Embracing His children of each tribe and race.

With Your feast You feed us, With Your light now lead us; Unite us as one in this life that we share.

Then may all the living With praise and thanksgiving Give honor to Christ and His name that we bear.

THE CLOSING HYMN: “In Thee Is Gladness” Hymn 818

1 In Thee is gladness Amid all sadness, Jesus, sunshine of my heart.

By Thee are given The gifts of heaven, Thou the true Redeemer art.

Our souls Thou wakest, Our bonds Thou breakest;

Who trusts Thee surely Has built securely; He stands forever: Alleluia!

Our hearts are pining To see Thy shining, Dying or living

To Thee are cleaving; Naught can us sever: Alleluia!

2 Since He is ours, We fear no powers, Not of earth nor sin nor death.

He sees and blesses In worst distresses; He can change them with a breath.

Wherefore the story Tell of His glory With hearts and voices;

All heav’n rejoices In Him forever: Alleluia!

We shout for gladness, Triumph o’er sadness, Love Him and praise Him

And still shall raise Him Glad hymns forever: Alleluia!
