Overview

The Master of Arts in Teaching with Secondary Certification (MAT Secondary) program is designed as a quality, two year, teacher training program for adults who have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. The program combines teacher education course work augmented by three field placements in local schools. At the completion of the program, students will have earned a teaching certificate as well as graduate credit toward a master’s degree. The full master’s degree can be completed following certification.

Classes are held in the evening and on scheduled Saturdays, except for the final semester of student teaching. Courses are taken as a cohort group with coursework beginning in the fall semester.

Who should apply

Individuals who want to pursue a career in teaching grades 6-12, who already have a bachelor's degree and who have or are willing to acquire a teachable major and minor as well as meet additional entrance requirements.

Application requirements

• Goal statement - In two pages or less, please include a short biography, your professional goals, and respond to the following questions:

o What experiences have led you to believe you would enjoy teaching (middle or high school) students?

o What abilities do you have that lead you to believe you can manage a classroom?

o Specifically, what grade levels and/or areas of the curriculum do you hope to teach? Why? o What knowledge, experience or personal attributes do you have that would benefit your students? o What do you hope to accomplish in a teaching career? Or what do you hope to accomplish in

your career life long.

• Felony/Misdemeanor Disclosure form

• Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate coursework • Résumé

• Experience Working with Children Form(s) - Thirty (30) hours of non-custodial experience required

(experience may be applied to this requirement if it has been accrued within three years prior to starting

the MAT Secondary Teacher Certification Program)

• Scores for Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills. See www.mttc.nesinc.com to register for the MTTC Basic Skills test.

Admission requirements*

• Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

• Cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better (improved grades in recent coursework will be considered).

• Passing scores on the MTTC Basic Skills and subject area tests.

• A 2.5 minimum grade in each course applying to major or minor teaching endorsements. Additional major and minor courses may be necessary for individuals whose prior coursework does not include sufficient credits for the core competencies set by the Michigan Department of Education for teaching a major and minor content area.

Individual interviews may be conducted in addition to these requirements.

How do I apply to the program?

Apply online at www.oakland.edu/grad - or print a paper application. Click on List of Graduate Programs and go to Secondary Education, M.A.T. On this website you can find a list of application requirements.

Once Graduate Admissions receives all necessary materials, application files are forwarded to the appropriate academic department for review by faculty and/or staff. Academic recommendations are made to Graduate Admissions where a final decision on the application for admission is made. Applicants are notified of the decision by letter.

What are the field experience requirements?

One of the strengths of Oakland University's teacher preparation programs is field experience in the schools throughout the coursework. Participants receive varied experiences working with school-age children and have an opportunity to apply coursework to the teaching environment.

During the course of the program and prior to the student teaching internship

• Students will complete a minimum of 100 hours of field experience to observe instruction and classroom management, work with students, and implement lessons.

• Fields and the student teaching internship are arranged by Oakland University. Limited after-school and Saturday field experiences may be available.

How long is student teaching?

• 12 weeks (one semester) of full-time, daytime student teaching is required in the final semester • Student teaching includes all school-related activities.

What are the Major and Minor Endorsement areas available at Oakland University?

In addition to the program courses, you are required by the Michigan Department of Education to have a

Oakland University is approved to provide teacher certification for the majors and minors listed.

To have your transcripts reviewed:

• Complete the Request for Program Profile for the MAT SECONDARY program. • Indicate your expected major and minor.

• Return the form and copies of your transcripts to the Professional Development office. Unofficial copies are sufficient at this time.

A Transcript review is based on an evaluation of your transcripts. It will identify those courses you have already taken, and list the courses needed to complete the major and minor you have identified.

If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, you need to be aware that passing our program, student teaching, and state certification tests does not guarantee certification or employment. Convictions are assessed and evaluated at the state level, including a review of court documents.

If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, you need to arrange a meeting with the Director

of Academic Advising prior to taking course work to complete a teaching major and/or minor. At this

meeting you will be informed as to potential difficulties in arranging field placements and student

teaching placements, as well as the potential difficulties for future employment, when recent and/or

serious felonies and/or misdemeanors have occurred.
