CARERS TAKE A BREAK

What does it mean to you?

‘Time 4 U’ service offers carers the chance to have a break from caring by providing short periods of care focused on the specifi c needs of the person you care for.

The care is provided by a local organisation and complies with all regulations on the provision of care. The service enables you to have time away from the home and your usual caring routine. You can use the time for anything you

want, such as meeting friends, attending a class, going to a concert, shopping, out for a meal etc.

There is no assessment to qualify for the ‘Time 4 U’ service. However, the person you care for must NOT be receiving Social Work services with the exception of Community Alarm, Meals Service and/or Shopping Service.

The person you care for must be aged 65 or over We asked some of our carers who use the service what this means to them?

“I am very happy with the service, it has been

extremely benefi cial and given me time

to go bowling.”

“I feel I have some time to myself

GET STUCK IN

If you haven’t yet come along to a Carers Voice meeting, why not!?

Carers Voice is open to any carers who want to get involved and make a difference.

The group does this in various ways, by giving you information and opportunities both within the Centre and also on a wider scale.

For instance, 2 of our carers sit on Dundee’s Carers Strategy Action group which meets on a regular basis and is an important group for carers’ priorities in the city. Over the past few months, carers have also taken part in an interview panel with Dundee City Council, attended focus groups with NHS Tayside and helped to produce a video for our AGM.

Over the next month, group members will be getting involved in the upcoming Carers Parliament and also

travelling down to Carers Scotland’s Annual Summit in Glasgow.

If you’re a bit unsure about getting involved, please give Tim a ring at the Centre. Otherwise, feel free to pop along to a meeting over the next few months: Thursday 31st October, 10-12 / Monday 25th November, 1.30-3.30. We look

forward to seeing you there.

Hello Dolly

A group of ladies went along to the perfor- mance of Hello Dolly at Pitlochry Festival Theatre and a fantastic time was had by all. Keep your eyes peeled for future

events organised by the Centre.

Sponsored Walk

Backwater Reservoir A sponsored walk took place on 19 September 2013. Carers from Adult

Support, UPBEET, staff members and volunteers took part to

complete the 7 mile challenge around Backwater Reserviour, near Glen Isla. Although it rained and there were

sore feet at the end, everyone was delighted to have completed the walk and

together helped raise £886.80 for the

Centre.

Carer Ambassador

Are you a current carer or a former carer and have some time on your hands and not sure what to do? Why not volunteer with us in our new volunteer role as a Carer Ambassador!

The Carer Ambassadors are currently raising awareness of the

Centre’s support services for carers at Taybank Surgery. We are looking for more volunteers to share their experiences and knowledge and expand to other surgeries in the area.

The more awareness raising the better, so we can reach out to more carers across the city!

For more information or if you are interested in volunteering with the centre as a carer ambassador, please get in touch with

Jen on 01382 200422 or jen.omeara@

Watch this space!

Two minibuses headed south-west to visit the Glasgow Science Centre. As well as three fl oors of att racti ons

at the Centre the Young Carers even held their own version of the 100 metres sprint to re-energise themselves at lunchti me. Most of the group hadn’t been to the Science Centre previously and thoroughly

enjoyed their fi rst visit.

8th August 2013 – E dinburgh Dungeons)

Young Carers Project took 19 young carers on a trip to visit the Edinburgh Dungeons. We ate our packed

lunches in Princes Street Gardens before heading over to the Dungeons. There were lots of screams and laughs in the Dungeons and everyone enjoyed themselves. Aft erwards we went up to Arthurs seat for a short walk and look around, and as a treat we stopped

for ice cream on the way home.

My name is Katy Devlin and I have recently joined the UPBEET team working with Sam and Vickie! I am now supporting some young adults on a one to one basis and also in group sessions. I recently graduated from Dundee University where I studied Community Learning and Development. I have experience in youth work and adult learning as well as previous volunteer work with Barnardos Family support team. I have really enjoyed meeting everyone and getting involved in all of our fun activities. On my very fi rst day at work I got involved in the Krav Maga session and even broke sweat learning self defence techniques…what a start to a new job!

As a group we have also had fun designing clothes with Showcase the Street and working with skill share!

We are now planning the next block of activities for everyone involved in UPBEET and we have an exciting new programme starting on 23rd October which includes a drumming workshop, Crime Scene Investigation night at Dundee Science Centre and fi rst aid training sessions delivered by the British Red Cross.

We also have Leslie Robertson joining our team to deliver cooking sessions for 12 weeks! This is very exciting and we are delighted to have Leslie on board! It is a great chance to put your cooking skills to the test and a brilliant opportunity to learn how to make healthy meals on a budget!

Through UPBEET you can also have the opportunity to complete online training modules for free! You can complete certifi ed online courses and have something to add to your C.V!

If you are interested in any of our activities please speak to your keyworker for more information!

Leslie and I can’t wait to meet all of the UPBEETERS and we look forward to working with all of you!

See you soon!

Our AGM in September was very well attended and featured

contributions from both carers and young carers who shared their

caring experiences and talked about how the support they had

received from the Centre had made a positive impact in their lives.

The event certainly moved and inspired the group of professionals, carers

and disabled people who attended. A lively panel discussion followed,

along with contributions from our keynote listeners, Laura Bannerman,

Social Work Department, Dundee City Council and Jim McCormick from

the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
