PASADENA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2020

Message from the President

H

ello PBA members! Thank you for your continued support of our organi- zation. We are excited about the future and happy to say that some of our events and meetings are able to be held so we can network and support one another. Regrettably the PBA President, Brian Conrad, has stepped down from his position. Based on a vote by the Board of Directors that was held in July, I am now the acting interim President of the Pasadena Business Association, an honor that I am happy to fulfill to the best of my ability. Additionally, we are very happy to welcome Dr. Christine Calvert as our interim Vice President until January 2021.

While many things are still in flux, we hold true and firm to the premise that we must ALL SHOP LOCAL please support our local businesses so we can keep our community strong. Our thanks go out to our essential employees that have soldiered on through these difficult times as well as our teachers who have, and are continuing to, navigate the new protocols as things change. Also, thanks to our local restaurants who have been available to us for curbside pick-up, delivery and made arrangements for outside dining, that couldn’t have been easy.

I personally don’t like the term, “new normal” and hope the “old normal” returns soon so we can all work our businesses, foster our business relationships, and keep the Pasadena, MD area that we love so much, healthy and vibrant.

Unfortunately, we were not able to hold our scholarship luncheon on August 5, 2020 at the Maryland Yacht Club due to Tropical Storm Isaias, but we were able to reschedule.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Jerry Nicklow and all of the volunteers who made the fundraiser successful so that we can award these scholarships.

I look forward to the next chapter in this challenging year and I know we can per- severe and work together to overcome many of the obstacles we are presented with because we are PASADENA STRONG!

My best wishes to you,

Christine Richardson, Q Marketing & Design

So far 2020 has been anything but typical. As business owners we are all trying to find our “new normal”. Ensuring that our business is in compliance with the new COVID19 mandates from both the state and the county can be chal- lenging to keep up with, as it seems updates are coming out almost daily.

The Annapolis Office Economic Development Center re- mains in contact with the US Small Business Administration, Maryland Department of Commerce, and the City’s Office of Emergency Management to provide businesses with im- portant information on the Coronavirus (COVID-19):

https://www.annapolis.gov/1631/COVID-19-Business-Re- sources

The state government also has a website specifically for businesses to provide resources for financial assis- tance as well as updated requirements for businesses to stay open:

https://govstatus.egov.com/md-coro- navirus-business

Also check https://pasadenabusi- nessassociation.com/ website for blogs that provide updated informa- tion as new mandates are released from the county and state.

At this time the elections are still scheduled for November 3, 2020. Be sure you are registered to vote and exercise your right! www.Voterservices.elections.maryland.gov has links to answer all of your questions concerning the upcoming election including updating your voter registration and requesting a mail in ballot as an option if you would prefer not to vote in person.

We are fortunate that our local delegates and state

representatives take a particular interest in supporting our Pasadena community and especially the businesses within that community. Now is the time to reach out to our del- egates if you have a concern that affects your business and may be remedied with new legislation. The next legislative session is slated to start January 13, 2021. It is still being determined what the session will look like, if that will be in person or via video conferencing. There is discussion of live streaming all legislative sessions moving forward.

If you have a concern that would affect your business and other Maryland business, Delegate Nic Kipke, Delegate Brian Chisholm, and Senator Bryan Simonaire are avail- able to discuss these concerns with you and determine if new legislation needs to be introduced in January. Now is the time to start sharing your ideas so our delegates can research the concern and formulate appropriate solutions with your input.

For issues that are on the county level, Councilman Na- than Volke can help provide solutions. The county council meetings are on Monday evenings year round, whereas the General Assembly only meets in January for a 90 day session.

A Special Thank You

Lisa Hart, Arundel Federal, Flag Chair

The PBA would like to thank members Scott Ellis - Costel- lo’s ACE Hardware; Jerry Nicklow - Huff Insurance; Sandi Parrish - PBA Executive Director and Army Veteran Russell Kletter Jr. for helping me get the flag down prior to Tropi- cal Storm Isaias’ hitting our area.

Thank you and God Bless America!
