7 Questions to Ask Your

Backup Solution Provider

1. Will this solution meet my compliance requirements?

Whether your industry requires a specific data retention period or your general business practice dictates one, you need a one-stop, cost-effective solution for protecting your data. Many companies that are required to be HIPAA-compliant, for example, will need to look for a backup solution with 256-bit AES encryption and FIPS 140-2 certification.

Companies in heavily regulated industries will need maximum protection from their backup solution provider. Look for private encryption key management that allows you to store data at such a high level of security that it’s locked away from everyone—including your backup solution team.

2. Do you charge extra for recovery jobs?

Many people are led to believe that hosted backup solutions offer total data protection and recovery at no additional cost. While most hosted vendors do offer some level of data protection, often it is only offered for the sake of the vendor’s protection against hardware failures or administrative oversight—not for your company’s protection against an employee accidentally deleting a customer record. If you do need to recover deleted data, there is typically a hefty fee if they are capable of recovering it at all.

A multi-platformed backup solution streamlines recovery as well as backup operations for even the most complex data systems. This reduces the administrative overhead required and puts you in control of your organization’s many operating systems, applications, and devices.

3. Is my data protected at all times?

Many backup solutions will store your data unencrypted while it’s local and then only secure it when it moves to the cloud. A good backup solution will encrypt your data before it ever leaves its source. With full encryption for both “in flight” and “at rest” data, your data is completely secure 100% of the time.

Industry standards for backup can vary, but look for a backup solution that enables all users to deploy the highly secure AES 256-bit encryption standard. This military-grade encryption method is used by most major government agencies and meets the requirements of the FIPS 140-2 Certificate of Security.

4. How frequently do you monitor my backups?

A good backup solution is more than a high-tech system – it’s the team behind it. When you lose data inadvertently, it’s important to know who will be there for you to make sure your data is recovered, eliminating any unnecessary stress, wasted time or lost revenue.

A team of highly qualified Certified Backup Engineers and IT technicians should serve as a second set of eyes for your data. They should be dedicated to monitoring and reviewing all backup and recovery daily. This ensures your backup solution team will be able to respond swiftly and appropriately if an error or failure occurs.

5. Will I need training in order to use the software?

6. Can I run multiple jobs at once?

The ability to back up and restore multiple jobs at once will give you flexibility and extra protection. Not all systems are capable of this, though. Wasted storage space and inefficient third-party hosted applications will slow down the entire system and limit your backup window.

Backup solutions with deduplication eliminate redundant data which reduces overall storage costs.

Agentless backup ability will minimize the number of necessary installations in your network and give you fast, flexible control.

7. What tools do you have to facilitate quick disaster recovery?

What good is backup data if it’s corrupt when you try to restore it? A poor-quality backup process is useless in a recovery operation. A good backup solution will perform ongoing administrative tasks called “autonomic healing” to verify the health of the cloud-based data and to ensure its availability for recovery at all times.

A combination of cloud-based storage and local copies will facilitate faster recovery times. To help things run smoothly between your local and remote storage, a transmission cache will enable interrupted data transfers to resume precisely where they left off, even if your internet is unreliable.

We offer everything you need to protect your data, efficiently and effectively.
