FIVE-WEEK FRENCH-LANGUAGE BURSARY PROGRAM

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

FEBRUARY 28, 2010

LIVE THE CANADIAN EXPERIENCE

LIVE THE CANADIA

N EXPER IENCE

(2)

Discover another region of Canada while learning French.

Enjoy fi ve weeks of

learning and adventure, friendship and

discovery.

Explore is a fi ve-week intensive language-learning

course. You can take the course in the spring or

summer, whichever you prefer. You can also take

a job for the rest of the summer, if you wish.

*

Bursary

Participants in Explore receive a $2,000 bursary

(taxable income) that covers tuition fees for the course,

instructional materials, meals, and accommodation.

The educational institution you will be attending

receives the bursary directly. Bursaries are awarded by

random selection, based on provincial and territorial

allotments and institutional quotas. Every effort is

made to accommodate fi rst-time applicants. We will

attempt to place you at one of the schools you have

chosen, but you may be asked to go to a school that

you did not indicate on your application form.

Credits

Some schools offer the possibility of transferring

credits for the course you take, so check with the

institution to which you wish to transfer your credits.

*

By the way, need a job? Languages at Work is a

component of Young Canada Works (YCW), which offers

a number of summer job placements for graduating

Explore participants. Such a placement gives you

the opportunity to use your second language at work

after you have fi nished Explore. For more information,

contact YCW at 1-800-267-5173 or [email protected].

Several levels of learning

Explore offers courses adapted to your level (beginner,

intermediate, or advanced), as well as many activities

that allow you to meet with others from across

the country who wish to improve their French.

Accommodation

Participants live in a student residence on campus

or with a homestay family whose

members speak French.

Costs

The program does not cover:

registration fee (a non-refundable $150)

travel costs

(3)

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following

three criteria. You must:

be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (those

studying in Canada on student visas are not eligible);

have completed at least grade 11 (secondary 5 in

Quebec) or be at the postsecondary level by the time

your Explore course begins; and

have been a full-time student for at least one term

during the current school year.

Registration

Complete the application form and attach photocopies

of the following:

your birth certifi cate;

or

proof of Canadian citizenship;

or

proof of permanent-resident status;

and

your social insurance card.

Send your application form and the required

photocopies to the coordinator of your home

province or territory by February 28 (postmark).

See the list of coordinators’ addresses on page 6.

Explore is a great way to become more fl uent

in another language, and a great opportunity

to meet other students.

Tope Quadri, English teacher

Ontario residents

If you are a resident of Ontario, please complete the

on-line application form available at https://osap.gov.on.ca/

eng/not_secure/Plan_Grants_full_sepapp_explore_12345.htm

.

Quebec residents

If you are a resident of Quebec, please see the on-line

application form available at www.myexplore.ca, which

will allow you to access Quebec’s Aide fi nancière aux études

portal. Once you have completed the identifi cation

process, you will be directed to the “On-Line Access to your

File!” section. Once there, select the “Explore Forms” tab.

Application status

In early April, you will be notifi ed by letter from your

provincial or territorial coordinator of the status of

your application. If you’re on a waiting list, don’t

despair! Bursaries are awarded throughout the

spring and summer to replace bursary recipients who

decide not to participate, so you may still get the

opportunity to explore another corner of the country.

The institution you will be attending will send you

an acceptance package. Complete the package

and return it, along with your registration fee and

deposit, if applicable. Don’t delay! If you haven’t

replied within two weeks of being accepted, your

bursary will be given to another applicant.

Important Note

Only complete applications

will be accepted.
