2. INTRODUCTION

Department of surgery started functioning in the year 1986-87.

First batch of students in clinical surgery commenced in the year 1989.

PG courses started in the year 1996- initially with intake of 2 students, increased subsequently to 4 students and at present 6 per year.

PG students posted in various superspeciality departments in our own hospital such Urology, Plastic surgery, Paediatric surgery, Surgical oncology, vascular surgery and Neurosugery. Courses offered: (as per mci guidelines)

 MS ( GENERAL SURGERY )

THEME:

Service / duty / sacrifice / professional ethics. VISION:

 Fully equipped surgical ICU catering to major operations to be developed.

 To imbibe professional ethics in young surgeons in surgical practice and make them competent to global demands.

 Providing skills in surgical operations.

 To attain the status of surgery as a cognitive discipline and develop achievements in surgical care.

 To widen the range of services to be provided by the department of surgery involving different super specialties and major surgical interventions in the need of hour.

 Super specialties in surgery is widening day by day to the horizon and the need to bring in these as a part of surgical training.

 To start super specialty courses / fellowships / training programmes in Urology / plastic surgery / neurosurgery /vascular surgery.

MISSION:

 PG`s / UG`s to be trained in acquiring observational skills in management of surgical disease.

 Interns training to take part in establishing the protocol of diagnosis and surgical management skills.

 Surgical and medical knowledge is constantly changing, hence need to update the surgical faculty thro` e-learning, gaining skills in specialties in preferred center’s by use of modern equipment’s and knowledge up-liftment by attending scientific programs.  Deliver highest possible quality of surgical care to all by emerging surgical technology. OBJECTIVE:

 To achieve staring of Super specialty courses in the coming year.

 To make a mark in medical society in the present scenario as an institution par excellence  To achieve excellence in standard of outgoing medical and surgical graduates.

 Morbidity/mortality meet held once a month.

 PG teaching committee members meet quaterly to discuss PG teaching program curriculum and update of dissertation work.

 Journal club / subject / clinical seminar conducted weekly.  Academic activities

 Regular training of faculty members in medical education unit as per mci rules.  Faculty training in minimal access surgery from reknowned institutes.

NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INITIATED: Undergraduate: Introduction of new topics in the curriculum

 Introduction to laparoscopic surgery,  Basics in laproscopic surgery,  Surgical ethics.

Postgraduates: Introduction of new topics in curriculum Advanced laparoscopic surgery,  Day care surgeries,

 Exposure to Endoscopy and staplers in surgery. Reforms implemented:

 Counselling for low performers and repeating internal exams.  Introduction of student feedback forms.
