Welcome

Hello!

We’re Action on Hearing Loss, the UK’s largest charity taking

action on hearing loss. We’re working for a world where hearing loss

doesn’t limit or label people, where tinnitus is silenced and where

people value and look after their hearing.

Our huge range of products can help you whatever your level of hearing

loss, if you simply want to protect your hearing, or if you have tinnitus.

We are here to offer you our full support in

choosing the right product. Our experienced Customer Service Team can provide expert advice and the best solution for your situation. You can also visit our website at

www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/shop for

information about our products and services. Please see right for our full contact details.

Why buy from us?

Our position is unique. We’re the only national UK charity with a full range of products for people with a hearing loss, so we’re the ideal source of impartial advice. And buying from us means that you are supporting our wider work with people with hearing loss.

We evaluate our products

Our technical experts test

and evaluate our products thoroughly, so you can be confident that you are buying a quality product that works well.

28-day money-back guarantee

Everybody’s level of hearing is different, so products that may work well for some people may not work as well for you. We understand that you may need to try different products before you find the ideal solution. The majority of our products can be returned within 28 days as long as they are in ‘as new’ condition and returned with their original packaging. Most products have a minimum warranty of one year or longer.

VAT

If you have a hearing loss, you may not need to pay VAT on some products. See page 88 for more information.

Free equipment may be available

Your local Social Services department may provide some products free of charge, so it’s worth checking with them to see what’s available. Some fire services offer free smoke alarms if you are deaf or hard of hearing, too.

org.uk/shop

Five reasons to love

our doorbells…

1.

They’re not just louder than standard models; they

can also flash.

2.

You’re alerted by a portable receiver unit, so you’re

bringing the sound closer.

3.

There’s no wiring! Take them with you around

the house.

4.

Some models can add extra receivers for

other rooms.

5.

Some models can add extra bell-pushes in case you

have more than one door that people use.

How do they work?

They come in two parts: the button that your visitor presses; and the receiver unit that alerts you. There are several options to consider:

Portable doorbells: battery

powered so you can take the receivers into the garden. Batteries last about one year depending on usage.

‘Plug-in’ doorbells:

simply plug these into your electrical sockets.

Telephone and doorbell alerts:

these will alert you to the phone ringing as well as the doorbell.

Paging systems (see page 20):

all-in-one devices that alert you to the doorbell/intercom, telephone, smoke alarm, and baby alarm.

How do you choose? Do you just want to be

alerted to the doorbell, or do you miss the phone too?

Why not consider a flashing light? A really loud doorbell may disturb others.

Are you happy to move the receivers around the house, or would you rather have two or three in different rooms?

Do you want to be alerted in the garden? If so, you’ll need a portable doorbell.

Would you prefer not to replace batteries? Buy a plug-in doorbell or one with a mains adaptor instead.

Our alarm

clocks are

designed to

wake you in

three ways…

1. They all vibrate.

Most do this via a pad that goes under your pillow. With most of our travel clocks, the whole clock vibrates!

2. Loud alarm.

Many of our clocks are louder than standard high street models. Some enable you to adjust the tone.

3. They flash!

Some clocks have a bright flashing strobe to wake you without disturbing others.

Top six things to look for…

1. How do you like to be woken?

2. Is the snooze function long enough for you?

3. Can you see the time clearly?

4. Do you want it to alert you to other sounds, such as the telephone and/or doorbell (see paging system on page 20)? 5. Do you want battery backup? 6. Do you want an analogue display, or digital?

A very loud alarm!

Good, large digits. I’ll

recommend to my friends.

Instant peace of mind with our

flashing and vibrating smoke

alarms – they’ll alert you or

your loved one, day or night…

There are several options to choose from:

Ionisation detectors are particularly sensitive to

free-burning fires – imagine a chip pan in flames. They’ll detect it before the smoke starts to thicken.

Heat detectors, as the name suggests, detect heat, rather

than smoke. People usually add them to an existing system.

Optical detectors are effective at detecting slow-burning

fires – like your wiring overheating. And they’re less likely to go off when you’re cooking.

Carbon monoxide detectors alert you to dangerous levels

of carbon monoxide coming from gas fires, boilers etc.

For full technical details, please request a copy of the Bellman Technical Solutions brochure. If you have severe or

profound hearing loss, we believe the Bellman system is the best way of being alerted to your doorbell, telephone, baby crying – or smoke alarm. And all via the one receiver! It’s also very flexible, so you can customise the system to suit your needs.

To make up your pack, simply decide:

How you want to be alerted.

Choose from the flashing and

vibrating receivers on page 21.

What you want to be

alerted to. Choose from the transmitters section on pages 22-23.

If you need overnight cover.

Choose from the pager charger and/or vibrating pad on pages 21-23.

You can even be alerted to four different transmitters of the same type (eg four baby transmitters).

To help you choose, we’ve grouped together the most popular selection of products. Our suggested pack includes:

Telephone transmitter (page 22)

Door transmitter (page 22)

Pager charger (page 21)

Vibrating pad (page 23)

Pager receiver (page 21)

Smoke alarm (ionisation) transmitter (page 22)

B1580 Alarm clock receiver

It has a loud alarm, four bright flashing lights and a vibrating pad that you pop under your pillow. The alarm uses a range of frequencies to suit different types of hearing.

How to listen...

These are fantastic, portable products that help you hear

more clearly, whether or not you have hearing aids.

Benefits

Enhance the volume and clarity of conversations and other sounds

Reduce background noise, which can be particularly distracting when wearing hearing aids

Suitable for most situations

Allow you to adjust the high and low tones (bass and treble) to suit your particular type of hearing loss.

Simply point the conversation amplifier in the direction you want to listen, and it amplifies the sound and transfers it directly to your hearing aids or ears, via a variety of options:

Headphones, earbuds and stethosets (if you don’t have hearing aids)

Ear hooks and neckloops (if you have hearing aids with a T setting, also known as a loop setting).

Controlling the direction

of sound

Directional microphones: These

pick up sound from the direction the amplifier is pointing to, while reducing sounds from all other directions.

Omni-directional microphones:

Some amplifiers allow you to switch from the directional microphone to one that’s omni-directional. This means you’ll be able to pick up amplified sound from all around; helpful when you want to hear several sounds at once – for example, when you’re chatting with two or three people in a quiet room.

Tone control

All our conversation amplifiers can adjust the high and low

tones (bass and treble) to suit your particular type of

hearing loss.

Digital sound vs analogue

Some amplifiers use digital technology to process and amplify the sound which gives better sound quality with reduced acoustic feedback (a whistling sound on high volume levels) and less background noise.

Listening to the TV

Conversation amplifiers can also be used for hearing the TV, although the ideal products for TV listening are on pages 35–36. To improve the sound further, some models have a TV kit. This is a cable that runs from the conversation amplifier to the TV and either plugs into the TV or comes with a microphone that you place next to the TV.

If you wear a pacemaker, speak with your GP and your pacemaker supplier before using a neckloop.

Elite listeners

We also offer a range of elite conversation amplifiers (see pages 29–31). These are wireless and are ideal when you are out and about and need to hear conversation at a distance, for example at dinner parties, meetings, presentations and lectures. They can also be used at home for listening to the TV.

L322 Crescendo 50/1 with stethoset

Elite listeners bring

all the benefits of a

conversation amplifier

(see page 27), but they

really come into their

own in those more

challenging situations.

They come with a powerful transmitter which means you can hear from up to 30 metres away. When someone speaks into the transmitter, the sound is picked up by your receiver – which amplifies the sound. So they’re just the ticket if you’re:

In a large group, sitting round a table. Put the transmitter in

the middle of the table and you’ll be able to hear what people are saying at the other end.

Listening to a presentation.

You’ll be able to hear the lecturer, tour guide, or your boss, as clearly as if they were standing next to you.

Watching TV. Place the

transmitter next to the TV and relax as the sound is wirelessly transmitted straight to you. • Out and about shopping,

at an exercise class or down the pub.

Reasons for a neckloop...

Neckloops and ear hooks are used by people

with hearing aids that have a T setting (also

known as a loop programme). They help

you hear sounds more clearly without being

distracted by background noise. They’re

used with products like MP3 players and

conversation amplifiers.

A neckloop goes round your neck, a bit like

a necklace; and ear hooks hook over your ear,

next to your hearing aid. Choose the method

you prefer – they both do the same job.

How do

you choose?

Here are some of the other functions

to look out for – see which one might

be right for you:

• Tone control enables you to boost or reduce the bass and treble to suit your hearing loss.

• Some TV listeners can charge your battery when in use.

• With some stethoset models you can control the volume for each ear. You can’t do this with neckloop products, unless you plug in headphones.

• If you’re unable to hear in one ear, you’ll find a ‘mono’ setting useful. This makes all the sounds go through both sides (stereo settings send some sounds through one ear, and some through the other).

• Most are plugged into an ‘audio out’ socket on your TV while some also have a microphone you place next to the TV speaker.

Note. If you wear a pacemaker, talk to your GP – and your pacemaker supplier – before using TV listeners with neckloops.

TV listeners

that connect

directly to your

TV’s ‘audio out’

sockets will give

the best possible

sound quality.

TV listeners

help you

hear the TV

more clearly.

There are two types:

A neckloop so you

can hear your TV

more clearly through

your hearing aid on

the T setting, and a

stethoset if you don’t

wear hearing aids.

Why we like them

They’re wirefree, so you won’t trip up over trailing cables

You can set the volume that’s right for you – without disturbing anyone else!

The sound goes straight to your ears, blocking out background noise

You can move around while listening to the TV or radio.

Short range vs long range Short-range infrared

listeners – for use within

the room

Long-range radio frequency listeners that operate up

to 100m away. Ideal if you want to listen to music or the news in the garden, or keep up with the match commentary while putting the kettle on.

Reasons to

use a loop...

Loops are for people

who wear hearing aids

with a T setting.

They normally consist of an amplifier and a cable that goes around the perimeter of your room and plugs back into the amplifier. The amplifier then plugs into a ‘sound source’ (like your TV), and you can also attach a small microphone for conversations. The electrical current in the loop produces a magnetic field that sends sound directly to your hearing aids when they are switched to the T setting (also known as a loop programme).

L415 Digital to analogue converter

Ideal if your loop and any TV listening system isn’t compatible with newer, digital TVs. Simple to plug in; full instructions supplied. • 1.8m mains lead
