Psy.D. Program Outcomes

Disclosure of Education/Training Outcomes and Information Allowing for Informed

Decision-Making to Prospective Doctoral Students (Commission on Accreditation, May 2006; revised November 2006; July 2007)

Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology (G&P) requires that doctoral graduate programs provide potential students, current students and the public with accurate information on the program and with program expectations. This

information is meant to describe the program accurately and completely, include education and training outcomes, and be presented in a manner that allows applicants to make informed decisions about entering the program.

(1) Time to Completion

The table 1.a, 1.b, and 1.c shows the data, percent, mean, and median number of years that students have taken to complete the program from the time of program entrance over the past seven years. These measures provide information for students who began the program as bachelor level graduates and those who began with advanced standing (e.g., after having completed a separate master's program in psychology).

Time-to-completion. Of the 40 graduates from 2004 to 2013, time-to-completion of the program for full time students is on average 4.3 years (median) or 5 years (arithmetic mean). For part-time students, time to completion is 6 years on average (median and mean). Note. The data table below is slightly skewed because the first cohorts all entered with M.A. degrees and fewer clinical requirements.

(2) Program Costs

The following information in Table 2.a indicates the costs (i.e., tuition and fees) per student for the current first year cohort. Program costs include full time student tuition, tuition per credit hour for part time students, and any fees assessed to students beyond tuition costs. For further information regarding current adjustments to tuition including, but not limited to: financial aid, grants, loans, tuition remission, assistantships, and fellowships, please contact the Financial Aid Office.

(3) Internships

The following data for Table 3.a suggest the most recent seven years of graduates showing their success in obtaining internships. Table 3.a shows the number and percentage of students in the following categories: students who obtained internships, students who obtained paid internships, students who obtained APPlC member internships, students who obtained APA/CPA accredited internships, and students who obtained two year half-time internships.

NOTE: In calculating the percentages, the total number of students applying for internship that year.

(4) Attrition

A 2009 analysis of the AUS Psy.D. program attrition rate revealed that of the 20 students who withdrew from the program, on average these students had a significantly lower undergraduate GPA (Mean = 3.06, SD = .47) than the 70 students who remained in the program (Mean = 3.40, SD = .43; t(27) = 3.0, p. = .003). This suggests that doctoral students with a below average undergraduate GPA may be at higher risk of not completing the program. In contrast, however, in 2011, the Psy.D. program examined all current and active Psy.D. students with a GPA lower than that typically admitted to nationally accredited programs (GPA < 3.3). The findings

revealed that out of 124 total students, 22 students had undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or lower, 50% of which were non-Caucasian students. In addition, of the 11 students with a GPA below 3.0, all were satisfactorily progressing in the program.

Nevertheless, as of September 2011, in order to secure a student body that is sufficient in number and qualified for training and careers consistent with our mission, goals, and objectives, the Psy.D. faculty decided it was best for students and the program to strictly enforce its current admission requirements. The lone, and rare exception in keeping with the Antiochian social justice mission, is that students with a lower than acceptable undergraduate GPA, but with a master’s degree and at least one-year post master’s clinical experience, may be admitted for doctoral studies under a one-year ‘conditional’ admission. Students who are admitted under the umbrella of the conditional admission criteria are limited to taking nine credits per quarter. Performance will be reviewed at the Annual Review meeting, at which time, the faculty will decide whether to remove the ‘conditional’ status, extend conditional status with a structured remediation plan, or recommend program withdrawal.

Table 4.a indicates the number and percentage of students who have failed to complete the program once enrolled. These data calculated each entering cohort by dividing the number of students in that cohort who have left the program for any reason by the total number of students initially enrolled in that same cohort. These data shows all students who have left the program in the last seven years or for all students who have left since the program became initially

(5) Licensure

Table 5.a indicates the number and percentage of program graduates who have become licensed psychologists within the preceding decade. This percentage was calculated by dividing the number of students who have both graduated and become licensed psychologists within the 8 years spanning the period of 2-10 years post-graduation by the number of doctoral degrees awarded by the program over that same period.

Post Graduate Licensure Rates. Of the total of 40 graduates since 2004, 14 (35%) have taken the national licensing examination for psychologists (EPPP), and 100% have passed, with all but one passing the first attempt. At present, 5 other graduates are preparing to take the EPPP. AUS Psy.D. graduates are licensed as psychologists in Washington State, New York, California, and Canada.
