Every day, we create and store more
information
(in the digital format)
than has been stored for most of our history on paper.

estimated
Over 95% of the digital universe is “unstructured data”
What’s a Byte?
If a Grain of Sand were One Byte of Information, then . . .
1 Megabyte = 1 million bytes a tablespoon of sand 1 Gigabyte = 1 billion bytes patch of sand— 9” square, 1’ deep 1 Petabyte = 1,000 terabytes
a mile long beach— 100’ wide , 1’ deep 1 Terabyte = 1 trillion bytes a sandbox— 24’ square, 1’ deep 1 Zetabyte = 1,000 exabytes
the same beach—
along the entire US coast
1 Exabyte =
1,000 petabytes
the same beach—
from Maine to North Carolina
1 Yottabyte =
1,000 zetabytes
enough info to bury the entire US under 296 feet of sand

Data Value
It is turned into “information” . . .
.
Businesses
Data Value - Examples
•
Identifying new business
opportunities thru buying patterns
and customer satisfaction
•
Identifying patterns that lead to
changes in existing business like
new services and targeted
marketing campaigns.
•
Creating a competitive advantage
Individuals
Data Value - Examples
•Digital Footprint: Memories, collections (music/video), emails,
financial records, address book and so on . . .
•Digital Shadow: web search histories, surveillance photos, financial histories, mailing lists and the like . . .
The Digital shadow is now greater than the amount of information
individuals create themselves – e-mails sent, phone calls made, pictures taken, and so on.
Digital Shadow has major implications on security, privacy, and info management.

Who is Affected?
I/O Flow – The Benefits of Storage Infrastructure
Client requests data from Host, data on internal HDD
Thousands of requests will slow down performance
– Servers also not available during unplanned or planned maintenance
Implementing a SAN, a multi-path channel to data provides:
– High availability thru Redundancy
– Improved CPU performance – I/O task is passed down
– Data is protected and managed from a shared platform
– Data can be replicated from storage platform
Reduce/eliminate backup window

Becoming an Academic Partner
Required Steps . . .
1. EMC and Institute sign the EAA Program Agreement.
2. Institute identifies individual(s) to teach course and administer the
program. Administration tasks include providing program information to EMC and serving as Institute point of contact.
3. EMC provides Institute with secure access to the Faculty website where course materials, storage management simulators, administrative tools, marketing materials and other resources are available.
4. EMC provides available training dates to Institute and Institute identifies professor(s) to attend the 5 day ISM training and clear ISM certification exam with 82% or higher.
5. Institute determines how to implement the course, (either as a core offering, elective or special topic) and creates course promotional plan.
