Getting a TV Licence.

Why do you need a TV Licence?

You need to be covered by a TV Licence no matter what device you use to watch or record television programmes as they are being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders. So, if you watch TV and are not covered by a valid TV Licence, you could face prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 and you will still have to buy a TV Licence.

How much does a TV Licence cost?

A colour TV Licence costs £145.50 and a black and white TV Licence costs £49.00.

If you or someone you live with are aged 74 or over, you may be able to claim a short term TV Licence for 74 year olds, or a free over 75 TV Licence. However, you must contact us and apply, otherwise you will be unlicensed.

To apply for a short term TV Licence for 74 year olds, or a free over 75 TV Licence, please call 0300 790 6061. You will need to provide your date of birth and National Insurance number. This can be found on your bank statement if your pension is paid direct into your bank account. If you don’t have a National Insurance number, please call to arrange alternative proof of date of birth.

If you are blind or severely sight impaired, you can claim

a 50% concession on the cost of your TV Licence. Please provide a photocopy of either your document of blind registration or

a certificate from your ophthalmologist stating that you are blind or severely sight impaired, along with your TV Licence number and contact phone number. Simply post this document, your details and your cheque payment to TV Licensing, Blind Concession Group, Bristol BS98 1TL.

How do you get a TV Licence?

You can buy a TV Licence:

By Direct Debit You need to have a bank or building society

account that accepts Direct Debit. You can pay monthly,

quarterly or yearly. When you have chosen which of the following schemes suits you best, just call us on 0300 790 6138 with your bank details to hand or visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk/dd.

Note that monthly and quarterly options are only available for a colour licence.

Yearly Your bank or building society will automatically transfer the full licence fee once a year.

Quarterly You will pay in four equal instalments, every three months. As most of your licence is paid in arrears, there’s a quarterly premium of £1.25.

Monthly You will pay for your first licence within six months. From then on, you’ll spread the cost in 12 monthly payments – six before your licence is due and six after.

To pay online You can pay online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk.

You can choose to pay by Direct Debit, credit or debit card.

By credit card or debit card To use a card such as a Maestro,

Delta, Solo, Visa, Visa Electron or MasterCard call 0300 790 6138 and give them your details.

At any PayPoint outlet You can pay for a full colour TV Licence

by cash or debit card.

By post Simply write a cheque for the full fee made payable to

‘TV Licensing’ with your name, address and licence number on the back and send it to: TV Licensing, Bristol BS98 1TL.

Would you rather pay in weekly instalments?

If you’d like to pay weekly for your TV Licence, you can make instalments of as little as £5.50 with a TV Licensing payment card. Please call 0300 555 3456, quoting ref: GAL.er the 31st July 2006, you will no longer be able to pay for your TV Licence at the Post Office®.
