Return to school

We are delighted with the way that the children have settled back into school.

New structures have explicitly been taught to ensure that children are confident with

new routines, including handwashing, one way systems, year group bubbles and changes to playtimes.

The first two weeks of teaching have been planned around a text- that has been written by experts to ensure that children’s well being and the ability to reconnect with the

school community is at the heart of everything we do.

The aim of our reconnection curriculum is to build emotional resilience, relationships, and ensure that children continue to develop the skills of successful learners.

Where possible, additional staff have been allocated to year groups, to provide extra support and modelling to children, and to ensure that they make good progress from their starting points.

English teaching

We continue to use a text based approach to our English teaching- informed by the evidence based Power of reading programme produced by the Centre for literacy in primary education.

In addition, our whole school writing and grammar progression documents ensure that teachers are quickly able to identify any gaps in a child’s learning and teach accordingly. Children read independently or with an adult in class every day, so please ensure that reading books and reading records are returned to school daily.

Reading is a big focus- with 3x weekly whole class reading sessions with a focus on vocabulary learning and comprehension skills.

We have introduced a new spelling scheme for the school which all year groups will be following.

Accelerated reader and reading journals

their reading level. This is reflected in their ZPD - which can be found in their

reading journal.

• Children have daily reading time in class and should be reading daily as part of

their homework, please ensure that their reading record (small & yellow) is

shared with you at home.

• Once your child has completed a book, they should take an AR quiz in school as

soon as possible. The quizzes consist of two elements, comprehension and

language – both are important.

• More information about the Accelerated reader programme can be found on

the website.

Study after study has shown how reading for pleasure is vital for academic success, mental health and even later economic
