Comprehensive Exam for

the

Emphasis

in

English and American

,

the

Emphasis

the

has the

following

justifications:

1.

Of

the 17 peer

peer-aspirant institutions

reviewed for

the

sake of comparison

,

only two (UNC and

an

The

most

recent external

of

the

recommended

that the department undertake

a

review

of our graduate

program

curricula and

degree requirements relative to those

of

peer

and

peer-aspirant

institutions

.

In response

,

the Master

of Fine Arts

in

Creative

Writing program

(MFA) examined its

requirements

against the

Po

Programs list,

which

is

the closest

thing

graduate creative writing

programs have to

a

ranking

system

.

(20

12 is the

year

that

we

broke into the

Top

Fifty

,

making this particular list

an excellent snapshot of our

peer

and

--predominately

--peer-aspirant

programs.) What

we

learned is that

we

have

what

is probably

the

most

cluttered curriculum

in

the

country

.

In

addition

to having

one of

the most rigorous

coursework

requirements among top-fifty programs,

we are also

one of on

l

y seven

programs

(out of

fifty) to require

a comprehensive exam and one of only five

programs

(out

of fifty)

to require proof

of foreign-

.

(Of

those programs that do require

one or

the

other

,

most have

we

do

and

many do not also require

an oral

thesis defense

,

as we

do.)

We are the

only

program (out of

the entire fifty) to

require both foreign-language

proficiency and a

comprehensive exam.

Our

deliberations

,

which achieved conse

n

s

u

s on eliminating

both

our MFA comprehensive exam and our

foreign-language-proficiency

requirement,

were guided above all

by

a

desire to

remove obstacles that

distract

students from

their

coursework and from

the most

substantive

product

of

their

education: a

book-length

work of

literary

fiction, creative

nonfiction

,

or

poetry.

A

book by published by

(or

a

Too

often our additiona

degree

requirements take

our students away from

their

central

task

of writing a

book

of

publishable length

and

quality

.

Further

,

our status as a true out

national norms

also

poses

a serious recruitment

hurdle

and

has

cost

us

a

number

of top students

to

other

programs

even as our

reputation

grows and we rise

in the

rankings

.

If these

changes

to

our

degree requirements

are enacted

,

the

book-length thesis

(and

its

formal oral

defense)

will stand as

the final

assessment

mechanism

for the

degree.

This

is in

lin

e with what

the

vast

majority

of our

peer

and (especially)

peer-aspirant programs require.

Our

MFA

Creative

Writing

Committee voted

in

favor of

these

changes

unanimously

(with one abstention on

the language question). After the

changes were approved

by the

English

department's

Graduate Committee

and

discussed

with

the

Facu

,

a vote of

the

full

department

was

taken.

The English

faculty voted

heavily

in favor of eliminating

the language-proficiency requirement

(with only one abstention

and one opposed) and

unanimously in

favor of eliminating

the

comprehensive exam (no abstentions and

none

opposed).

T

he proposal to elimin

ate the qualifying exam as a requirement in

our English

Ph.D

.

program has the

following justifications:

1.

Comparison w

ith

17 peer and peer-aspirant programs has confirm

ed

that none of

them requires what we call

the

"

qualifying" exam (although some call their Ph.D.

"

comprehensive" exam a

"

qualifying

"

exam).

2

.

Discussions with the Graduate Sc

hool have confirmed that demonstration of

"

qualification

"

can

be ach

ieved

through varied kinds of assessment and need not entail an exam

. The proposed meeting with the graduate

director and

major advisor along with the

vetting of

the program of stud

y and research plan will determine a

student's qualification for candidacy.

3

.

Student

s will

be ab

le to conce

ntrate more full

y on their course work and

on developing a program of study

.

The qualifying exam in particular seems to be an

unnecessary hurdle for students whose recent

acceptance in

the program indicates that we cons

ider them qualified.

The change

to the

has the

owing

justification:

1.

The

new model retains both

a written and an oral comprehensive exam even

though

only a few ofthe

peer-aspirant institutions

we

researched require both

formats

.

The goal in

reformatting the

as a 3-day

to allow the

to

serve as a

better indicator

of a student's

comprehensive

as

a
