In response
,
the Master

we
learned is that
we
have
what
is probably
the
most

in
the
country
.
In
addition
to having
one of
the most rigorous

We are the
only

Our
deliberations
,
which achieved conse

were guided above all
by
a
desire to
remove obstacles that

Undergraduate
~ GraduateT
he proposal to elimin
ate the qualifying exam as a requirement in
our English
Ph.D
.
program has the
following justifications:
1.
Comparison w
ith
17 peer and peer-aspirant programs has confirm
ed
that none of
them requires what we call
the
"
qualifying" exam (although some call their Ph.D.
"
comprehensive" exam a
"
qualifying
"
exam).
2
.
Discussions with the Graduate Sc
hool have confirmed that demonstration of
"
qualification
"
can
be ach
ieved
through varied kinds of assessment and need not entail an exam
. The proposed meeting with the graduate
director and
major advisor along with the
vetting of
the program of stud
y and research plan will determine a
student's qualification for candidacy.
3
.
Student
s will
be ab
le to conce
ntrate more full
y on their course work and
on developing a program of study
.
The qualifying exam in particular seems to be an
unnecessary hurdle for students whose recent
acceptance in
the program indicates that we cons
ider them qualified.

Graduate Director will review the student's class
grades with the expectation of at least a 3. 0 GP A
over the course of the first year of study. The
student will come to the meeting with a completed
Program of Study form and an accompanying
statement detailing progress thus far and plans for
future study. In the event of an unsuccessful review
,
the student will be put on probation, not be admitted
to candidacy, and be required to maintain a 3.5
GP A for each of the following two semesters.
Additionally, field faculty will meet at the end of
the student's second year in order to make a
recommendation to the Graduate Director about the
student's future in the program. The Graduate
Director will factor this recommendation and the
student's GPA into a decision about whether the
probationary student should be admitted to
candidacy at the end of the second year and allowed
to continue in the program.
