Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effects of smelling vanilla to amount of food intake. Specifically, this study sought to respond to the areas for study:

1.) What describes the respondents in terms of:

a. age

b. sex

c. . Body Mass Index (weight and height)

d. eating habits

2.) What is the kind and amount of food that the respondents can consume before smelling vanilla?

3.) What is the kind and amount of food that the respondents can consume after smelling vanilla?

4.) Is there a significant difference in the amount of food consumed before and after smelling vanilla?

Hypothesis

Corollary to the statement of the problems, the hypothesis was formulate and about to be tested.

1. There is significant effect on the smelling of vanilla to the amount of food intake of overweight youths.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope this research work was delimited according to research problem, locale, population and time frame. This study will analyze the effectiveness of smelling vanilla to the amount of food intake among overweight youths.

Problem: This study aims to answer the main and specific problems previously stated in the statement of the problem. It will be focused on the effectiveness of smelling vanilla to the amount of food intake among overweight youths.

Locale: The study will be conducted at a room in St. Martin Building of Holy Trinity University.

Population: The subject of this research involves the 14 overweight youths (15-29 years old), male and female from Puerto Princesa City.

Time Frame: This study will be conducted from June to October 2010.

This study is significant to the following target populations:

To the Holy Trinity University, Collge of Nursing and Health Sciences, this study will provide new information regarding the effects of smelling vanilla to the amount of food intake among overweight youths therefore will provide additional teachings regarding management of such youths.

To the respondents, this study will be of help to control their weight problem and be able to prevent the occurrence of possible complications caused by being overweight.

To the student nurses, the output of this study will serve as ground in formulating nursing care plans among client with weight problem, e.g., overweight and underweight. This study will also generate new information for the students as additional input for their health teachings among overweight patients.

To the researchers, this study will serve as a reference for other researches who will be conducting same study.

Definition of Terms

The following terminologies were defined conceptually and operationally in order to reach a common understanding on its meaning.

Overweight – person who have BMI of 25 to 29 (Dudek 2006) --- Medical Surgical Book, pp78

Youths - the time of life between childhood and adulthood (maturity), ages 15-29 years old. --- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth

Health Teaching – process of imparting knowledge about health to the specific clients.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This research study is about the Effectiveness of Smelling Vanilla to the Amount of Food Intake of Overweight Youths. This chapter presents the research method, sampling technique, research instrument, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data utilized in this study.

Research Method

The study will use the descriptive-experimental research method in obtaining the data needed or variable status. According to Sevilla, this method is fact-finding. A descriptive design is used to identify a phenomenon of interest, identify variables within the phenomenon, event or group in real life situations for the purpose of discovering new meaning, describing what exists, determining the frequency with which something occurs, and categorizing information. This method involved data gathering, tabulation, interpretation and analysis of data as to its

significance and relationship with the subject of the study. The research became descriptive by profiling the information of the respondents through the use of questionnaires.

Experimental method of research was also used in this study. According to James P. Key, experimental research is an attempt by the researcher to control the condition over the other variables that may have an effect to the result of an experiment. In doing this, the researcher attempts to predict what may occur.

In this study, the smelling of vanilla will be employed to the experimental group which is consist of 7 overweight youths where this population will smell vanilla for 3minutes and after that, they will be given food to eat, and we will see of the smelling of the aroma of the vanilla will affect their amount of food intake.

Sampling Technique

The study will use convenient sampling in selecting the respondents. The researchers will find 14 persons who are overweight and will be divided into two groups, the controlled and uncontrolled group. The controlled group which will be consist of 7 persons will smell the

vanilla before eating and the other group, the uncontrolled one will eat without letting them smell the aroma of vanilla.

Research Instrument

The researchers will use a questionnaire and will be given to respondents for them to answer to draw out the needed data and to profile the information gathered from the respondents. The researchers will also use 1teaspoon of vanilla syrup and put it in a cotton ball. Each cotton

ball will be distributed to the respondents under the control group, and they will smell it for 3 minutes.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering data, the researchers will follow the procedure below:

1. Get permission to conduct the study from the head of the Holy Trinity University Research and Development Center; copy furnished to the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

2. Permission to conduct the study was sought from the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

3. The prepared questionnaires will be distributed to the respondents. They will answer it for the researchers to draw out the needed data and to profile the information gathered.

4. The researchers will conduct the test with the controlled and uncontrolled group. After the test, the amount of food consumed by the controlled group will be compared to the amount of food consumed by the uncontrolled one.

5. The result of the test will be interpreted and conclusions and recommendations will be stated.
