FINAL PROGRAM
WELCOME
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to welcome you to the 5th Biennial Conference of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders and İstanbul, Turkey for this 4 day program from 14 - 17 March 2012. We hope you enjoy your time in İstanbul, the melting pot of continents and cultures over centuries. The Istanbul Lufti Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Center will serve as the sole facility for all conference related activities, including pre-conference workshops, ISBD membership, administrative and task force meetings, and satellite symposia. The ISBD is committed to inclusiveness in all its activities, and draws on its chapters and internationally recognized leaders in the field to bring you an outstanding scientific program.
As referenced above, ISBD will again host a full day of activities prior to the opening ceremony of the meeting, which are part of what make the ISBD meetings a unique experience for attendees. We have arranged a series of pre-conference workshops on topics including women’s health, mood stabilization and comorbidity, an experts’ course for young clinicians, chronotherapeutic techniques in the management of bipolar disorder, and advancement clinical topics and future trends in bipolar disorder. These workshops will offer participants the opportunity for a more interactive experience, with opportunities to discuss case vignettes. ISBD members will also not want to miss the annual General Membership Meeting, which will be held on the 14th of March at 16:00 in the Dolmabahce
C Meeting Room.
Among the highlights of the conference are 4 keynote presentations, including a child and adolescent debate, a bipolar spectrum session, US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Updates, and a Word Psychiatric Association (WPA) address to the congress. The meeting will also feature engaging core symposia on topics including optimizing functional outcomes, interpreting clinical trials, DSM-V updates, molecular genetics, neuroimaging, and advocacy. As in years past, ISBD will also be holding an awards ceremony and special concurrent session for the winners of the Samuel Gershon Awards for Junior Investigators, as well as an International Society for Affective Disorders (ISAD) session.
We trust you will find the conference to be a memorable, informative and enjoyable event.

WORKSHOPS
Workshop-1
Title: “State of the Art in Diagnosing, Assessing and Treating Bipolar Disorder” A Training Course to Become
a Bipolar Expert
Description: To provide an overview for clinicians who are new in the field of bipolar disorder, on how to
diagnose, how to assess and how to treat (psychologically and pharmacologically) patients with bipolar disorder. The course will include 5 sessions of one hour each, consisting of short presentations by experts on the topics, each followed by extensive discussions and including exercises using clinical case vignettes, to ensure much interaction with the course participants.
Chair : Dr. Willem A Nolen, the Netherlands Date & Time : 14 March 2012
Full Day : 09:00 - 16:00 Room : SULTAN 2 HALL
Workshop-2
Title: “Being A Woman With Bipolar Disorder”
Description: To educate the participants on the course of bipolar disorder throughout life cycle in female
patients with a special focus on menstrual cycle/endocrinology/alcohol related problems; teaching ways of working with bipolar women in pregnancy planning, treatment plans and medication use in pregnancy; increase awareness for diagnosing and managing (including pharmacotherapy) bipolar disorder during post-partum period and lactation; updating the audience on the available screening and diagnostic tools for bipolar disorder in post-partum period.
Chair : Dr. Ayşegül Özerdem, Turkey Date & Time : 14 March 2012
Half Day : 12:30 - 16:00 Room : SULTAN 3 HALL
Workshop-3
Title: “Chronotherapeutic Techniques in the Management of Bipolar Disorder”
Description: The acute, pharmacologic treatment of manic and depressive mood states often fails to achieve
quick, complete, lasting and safe remissions. Chronotherapeutic interventions which act by shifting circadian rhythms and sleep, can produce rapid and sustained reductions in affective symptoms. In this workshop, early-career and more experienced clinicians will learn how to expand their therapeutic options with sleep deprivation-based approaches, bright light therapy, dawn simulation and other rhythm-shifting methods. Starting with a brief review of circadian neurobiology and sleep regulation, the workshop will provide detailed, practical information about each chronotherapeutic modality and how they can be combined successfully with pharmacologic treatments. Presentations will include case examples and encourage clinical questions and discussion. Based on the first treatment manual published for this emerging subspecialty (Wirz-Justice et al., 2009), workshop participants will acquire the practical knowledge necessary to know how and when to administer chronotherapeutic interventions in their clinical practices.
Chair : Dr. John gottlieb, USA Date & Time : 14 March 2012 Half Day : 12:30 – 16:00 Room : SULTAN 1 HALL
Workshop-4
Title: “Advanced Clinical Topics And Future Trends In Bipolar Disorders”
Description: Summarize in a comprehensive presentation the new findings and trends in neurobiology,
diagnostic and clinical approaches in bipolar disorders. Discuss the staging model of treatment as a useful clinical algorithm to increase early diagnosis and treatment. Understand the biological markers related to bipolar disorders and its clinical correlation. Review the proposed changes for DSM 5, regarding the mixed episode criteria, and study the new concepts of course specifiers and subsyndromal states. Analyze the dilemma of using antidepressants in bipolar population and the possible consequences they may generate in the course and characteristics of future episodes of the disorder.
Review the new medications that may follow the current pharmacological options for treatment and underline the future research projects, and clinical areas of opportunity for new findings in bipolar disorders.
Chair : Dr. Manuel Sanchez Carmona, Mexico Date & Time : 14 March 2012

Bipolar Disorders Association of Turkey is one of the oldest chapters of International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD). The association was founded in 2007 by a group of mental health professionals. The aims of the association are to increase awareness in the community on the cause, course and treatment of bipolar disorders, to facilitate fight against stigmatization and alienation of the patients, to contribute to health policy making processes that are pertinent to chronic mental illnesses including bipolar disorder; to support scientific research and educational programs for professionals. Up to date, the association supported research projects, ran an educational summer school for young clinicians, contributed to the treatment guidelines of bipolar disorder in collaboration with Psychiatric Association of Turkey, and provided educational grant for 50 residents for conference participation.
LITHIUM SOCIETY TURKEY
Lithium Society is the first advocacy oriented body in Turkey, founded by a small group of patients and psychiatrists in Izmir in 1997. It has nearly 75 members consisted mainly by patients and family members. The society’s name is a tribute to lithium, the widely known life saving molecule. The aims of the society are to increase awareness for early diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder, provide support for patients and families, and to fight against stigmatization. Lithium society operated locally in Izmir since its establishment with support group meetings for the patients, periodic educational lectures and social activities open to the public. Lithium Club is the artistic arm of the society where patients get together for painting sessions. It has provided a therapeutic environment to many individuals who were otherwise confined to indoors due to adversities of a long lasting course of illness. The strength of the society is the contributions coming from volunteers. However the weak coherence among the members and inefficient financial support have been the major challenges of the society over the years.
