Quality University Education

(2)

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) was established by Government legislation in 1997,

having served the community since 1989 to provide higher education opportunities at the degree

level by means of open learning. It extended its service to offer full-time face-to-face Bachelor’s

Degree programmes to secondary school leavers in 2003.

The University’s four Schools – Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Administration, Science

and Technology, and Education and Languages – offer a range of degree programmes including

social sciences, arts, creative writing, animation and visual effects, photographic digital art,

creative advertising and media design, business administration, languages, education, computing,

engineering, nursing, testing and certification. Most programmes are taught in English while

some programmes have Chinese as the medium of instruction. Our full-time programmes are

primarily taught by the University’s full-time academics, most of whom are Doctoral Degree

holders, active in research with many years of teaching experience. The University takes pride in

its stringent quality assurance system, which is applied to all of its academic programmes.

The OUHK’s programmes operates under the credit unit system, which allows certain flexibility for

a student to progress according to his/her own pace of study, subject to the rules and regulations

of the degree pursued.

The OUHK has for a long time been offering 4-year full-time Bachelor’s Degree programmes.

Under the 3-3-4 curriculum, students would pursue a major area of study, complemented by

general education as well as out-of-discipline courses. In this way, their educational experience

at the OUHK is well-balanced, with a broad foundation and strong in-depth coverage of their

chosen areas of specialization, in order to meet the challenges of a forever-changing

knowledge-based society and community.

Currently, there are over 6,700 students studying full-time programmes. To cope with the growing

demand, the OUHK Jubilee College has been established to provide an additional 2,400 places

for programmes in the cultural and creative arts, testing and certification, and nursing. The new

campus is expected to be in operation in late 2013/ early 2014.
