Revised to meet
Continental Automotive
Systems SAP requirements
Note: All released revision level changes to this document will also require the Originator to update the Revision level of this document in specification number 87M42999T85 - “Index of Manufacturer’s Requirements and Reference Specifications”.
Introduction:
This specification describes Continental Automotive Systems guidelines for its suppliers to print and apply labels, on intermediate and shipping containers, and packing lists. The label requirements contained in this document are Continental’s interpretation of the latest versions of the following standards: Electronic
Industries Association Outer Shipping Container Bar Code Label Standard (EIA 556-B); Product Package Bar Code Label Standard for Non-Retail Applications (PN 33497]); and the American National Standard Data Application Identifiers for Material Handling (ANSI/MH 10.8.2 M-199x), which is a Data Identifier guideline.

Bar Code Specifications
Bar Code Characteristics
X dimension The intended width of the narrow elements dictated by the application, or symbology specification, or both.
May not be less than .010 inches.
Symbology Code 39 characters consist of five bars and four intervening spaces. Characters are separated by inter-character gaps. Reference threshold RT is equal to one-eighth of character width S
RT = S/8
Within each character, all elements wider than RT are considered to be wide and the others narrow. The pattern of wide and narrow elements must match a valid character from the allowable character set.
Density 3.7 to 6.9 characters per inch. Orientation Picket fence mode is preferred
(see examples on page 7).
Print quality Bar code print quality should be checked periodically with a verifier. Print quality should be in accordance with ANSI X3.182-1009, Bar Code Quality Guideline. Data Character
Set 43 characters (0 to 9, A to Z, -, ., /, +, %, $, and space) Human readable
character height (mandatory)
0.200” (5 mm) minimum for shipping labels 0.100” (2.5 mm) minimum for intermediate labels.
Quiet zones
(mandatory) There shall be leading and trailing “quiet zones” of no less than 0.25” (6.35 mm) before and after each bar code used on a label. These areas must be free of any marks or borders.
Physical characteristics of label
Label material Paper shall be white in color with black printing. Adhesive types Pressure sensitive or gummed dried or easy peel.
Application shall be wrinkle-free. Environmental
considerations These labels are intended for indoor use. Exposure to direct sunlight, rain, and high humidity may seriously affect the scanability of the label. Recyclability When possible, the label material and adhesive should not prohibit recyclability
of the substrate.

Bar Code Label Requirements
There are four different types of labels described in this document: intermediate container labels, shipping labels, packing list labels, and outer pack labels. These labels are described in detail in the following four sections. This section is intended to graphically describe the labels required for each type of purchase order.
Purchase orders with single line items require a (4S) Packing List Label for each shipment, (3S) Shipping Label for each carton, and Intermediate Container Labels for each intermediate container.
Purchase orders with multiple line items require a (5S) Outer pack Label, (4S) Packing List Label for each line item in the shipment, (3S) Shipping Label for each carton, and Intermediate Container Labels for each intermediate container. Intermediate Container Label Description:
This label should be affixed to all intermediate containers and this data is used for tracking purposes. It may be used by both the supplier and the customer. If necessary, more than one label may be used but must be on the same side of the container to insure that all required information is clearly visible.
Dimensions:
Label size will depend on data required and size of container. Human readable characters shall be a minimum of 0.1 inches (2.54 mm) high. Minimum bar code symbol height shall be 0.25 inches (6.35 mm). Minimum quiet zones of 0.25 inches (6.35 mm).
Recyclability:
Label material and adhesive should not prohibit ability to recycle the substrate. This may be a requirement for certain packaging applications in certain countries.
Placement:
The ends of boxes and ammo packs, sides of reels opposite sprocket holes, reel bags, tops of tray sleeves, reel boxes, and bundles. Example - if a reel is placed in a bag then BOTH the reel and bag shall be labeled. If the reel is sealed in moisture barrier bag prior to labeling, an extra easy peel label MUST be supplied for application to the reel when the bag is opened. The easy peel label must be attached to the moisture barrier bag.
NOTE: Both the 1T & the 9D are required. Both bar codes MUST be present on the intermediate label.
If the supplier only has one type of data (lot code or date code) the data must be bar coded twice, once with each data identifier. Example of what data would scan: 9D0425 1T0425
A Unique Lot Code must be generated to track combination of both lot or codes. A maximum 15 alpha-numeric
character field length is supplier generated and must be traceable. No more than two lot or date codes may be
packaged on one reel, tray, sealed bag, etc. Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) rating MUST be in accordance with AEC and JEDEC criteria. http://www.aecouncil.com/ http://www.jedec.org
Country of Origin – 2 character country code is defined in ISO 3166. http://www.iso.org/
The country name may be spelled out on the label or company logo may be used. Manufacturer’s Company name is required. Company address is optional on this label. Information may be divided onto two labels, if it is not possible to get all the required information on one label. If two labels are used, they must be on the same side of the reel, sealed bag, box, etc.
Minimum bar coded data elements for Intermediate Label:
Data Identifier
Title Definition
(P) Customer part number
Continental part number is on purchase order.
It is must be encoded without dashes. (refer to examples) (1T) Trace code /
Lot Code
Traceability number assigned by the supplier to identify/trace a unique group of entities (e.g., lot number, batch number, etc.). A Unique Lot Code must be generated to track combination of both lot or codes. A maximum 15 alpha-numeric character field length is supplier generated and must be traceable.
(9D) Date code Date of Manufacture or assembly (structure and significance mutually defined). A Unique Date Code must be generated to track combination of both lot or codes. A maximum 15 alpha-numeric character field length is supplier generated and must be traceable.
(Q) Quantity Unit quantity within the container. Quantity field is numeric only. Use of leading zeros or punctuation is prohibited.
(V) Supplier code Mutually agreed upon supplier/vendor identification code as it appears on the purchase order. Leading zeros if any are required in this field.
Human Readable Data Element
Definition
Supplier Name: Company name of manufacturer/supplier.
Country of Origin: Country manufactured or assembled in. May use 2 character designation as in ISO 3166 or write country name. http://www.iso.org
Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL)
Moisture sensitivity level rating MUST be in accordance with AEC and JEDEC criteria. http://www.aecouncil.com/ http://www.jedec.com/ All components must have an MSL designation noted on the intermediate label. If part is not moisture sensitive, use MSL 1 – Unlimited.
