Data centre traffic is expected to show a compound annual growth rate of 12 per cent a year until 2017. This rate highlights the business critical nature of data centres and the growing importance of infrastructure resilience for business continuity.

Data centres need to be constructed and maintained as a safe and secure environment that minimises service interruptions for companies and their customers.

Thiess is the largest provider of infrastructure services to ICT companies Australia-wide. Our experience spans the

whole project life cycle, reflecting our extensive construction, asset management and optimisation, alarm monitoring, reliability engineering and reserve power expertise.

Thiess’ data centre whole-of-life capability reduces risk and cost through:

»

Single-point accountability

»

Contractor continuity

»

Accumulated experience and knowledge

»

Economies of scale

»

Ongoing collaboration with stakeholders and suppliers.

We are generating more

and more data every day.

It is estimated that

90 per cent of the world’s

data has been generated

in the last two years, and

94 per cent of information

is now stored digitally.

data centre construction

Thiess has a proven track record constructing data

centres including the management of all structural,

mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, civil and security

requirements.

As part of the National Broadband Network, we have constructed eight modular data centres to support critical communications infrastructure in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. This project was one of the first large-scale roll outs of modular data centres in Australia.

Our scope included:

»

Construction of eight modular data centres on brownfield sites across Australia

»

Management of structural, civil, electrical, mechanical and demolition works

»

Development of facilities, power, cooling and associated infrastructure

»

Advanced reliability testing

»

High-level reliability modelling.

With broad-based geographic experience, Thiess is the ideal partner when undertaking work in Australia’s most remote locations. We designed and constructed a purpose-built data centre in Western Australia to support our client’s remote mining operations in the state’s north-west.

Delivering improved performance and increased redundancy, our design optimised heat management through passive cooling options and high efficiency power rectification. Our scope included critical infrastructure such as duplicated Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems, standby power generation, power reliability equipment, air-conditioning and racks.

QUEENSlAND

Case study

Thiess was responsible for the design

and construction management of Queensland’s only Tier 3+ Data Centre. Situated in Springfield, the Polaris Data Centre is capable of meeting the high demands of Australian and Asia pacific blue chip clients.

The centre hosts mission-critical systems for government and corporate enterprise customers. It enables organisations with their own traditionally built and operated centres to outsource this service to an off-site, secure and managed location. Polaris is self-sufficient for up to 48 hours, with the ability to provide scalable, redundant power and cooling

infrastructure up to 1500W/m2 across the data floor area.

The centre’s features include:

»

6900m2 of raised computer

floor located over five storeys

»

Power and cooling systems with a high level of redundancy

»

24/7 manned video surveillance monitoring

»

Bullet-proof glass

»

Intruder resistant perimeter in accordance with Defence standards

»

A fire proof store room.

asset maintenance and management

Thiess has more than 11 years’ experience

in data centre facilities management.

Our expertise in the operations and maintenance of critical infrastructure assets ensures we understand the industry’s unique requirements, which include upholding the highest standards of reliability and security.

With a focus on three key areas – work process flow, reliability engineering and asset management, and condition management – we optimise the performance of technically complex assets such as data centres.

Our approach is based on decisions that deliver the best outcome over the life of the asset. This begins with understanding our client’s strategic asset objectives and assessing the operational function and criticality of their facilities and related assets. We then develop management plans to optimise the asset’s reliability, performance and operating cost.

Our capabilities include:

»

Preventative maintenance planning and scheduling

»

Reliability centred maintenance programming

»

Asset registers and condition assessments

»

Risk management

»

Annual maintenance budget planning and forecasting

»

Budget management and reporting

»

Fixed plant maintenance

»

Electrical services

»

UPS and battery programs

»

HVAC programs

»

Back-up generator programs

»

Fire detection and suppression.

setting the standard

Thiess has developed standards for Telstra and the NBN Co’s

telecommunications and data centres, which have been applied across Australia to protect critical infrastructure. Based on historical data, and Thiess’ extensive experience, the standards guide design to avoid data centre weakness and ensure learnings are shared across the client’s networks.

24/7 alarm monitoring

Thiess manages two sophisticated operation centres which monitor telecommunications networks and data centres nationwide. In the case of an emergency, we have more than 250 technical staff across Australia ready to respond to alarms and correct the fault.

building information

modelling for ict facilities

Case study

Thiess has designed a technique to conduct virtual stress testing on working models of mission critical ICT facilities comprising data centres and telecommunications.

This new technique permits risk-free virtual stress testing of ‘what-if’ scenarios to reveal hidden weaknesses.

More than 100 critical facilities have been modelled up to 5MVA in size, identifying more than 200 hidden weaknesses.

back up power

We understand the importance of ensuring availability as part of data centre maintenance. Our team provides a range of solutions that can manage fluctuating loads and outages, boost mains power and manage the thermal environment of equipment.

Our services include the design, procurement, installation and maintenance of:

»

AC and DC UPS

»

Energy storage systems

»

Power quality and earthing systems

»

Standby generation plant

»

HVAC, monitoring and racking

»

Equipment huts and shelters.

outage reduction

Thiess has developed a load management system that actively monitors loads on critical data centres. Created for Telstra’s UPS, the system can be applied anywhere and actively estimates true UPS capacity to avoid overload. It successfully reduced outages from five in three years, to one in a similar period.

As part of our asset management approach,

we identify and manage asset and system

reliability risks, and focus on dependability.

availability

management

reliability engineering

Thiess provides a range of products and services to support data centre reliability engineering including:

»

Containerised data centre modules

»

High voltage DC solutions

»

Standby generation plant

»

Power reliability and protection

»
