ABOUT US

WE BELIEVE

AWARENESS

Personal: Increased understanding of the relationship between oneself and others in the world.

Local and Global: Increased ability to recognize and understand issues of local and global concern.

AGENCY

Courage: Increased ability to take risks and step out of one’s comfort zone

Commitment: Increased ability to set and follow-through on responsibilities.

ENGAGEMENT

Increased development of personal, educational, and career aspirations.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

3

First-hand exposure to different countries, cultures and people is one of the most powerful educational experiences a young person can have. Young people from all backgrounds should have access to the experiences and 21st century skills that prepare them to become successful and responsible global citizens.

1% of U.S. high school students study abroad and 82% of those students come from affluent, Caucasian backgrounds. Global Glimpse is on a mission to change that.

WHAT WE DO

PROGRAM MODEL

Global Glimpse is a two year program during the junior and senior year of high school. We engage high school juniors in a year-long preparatory curriculum at their school that culminates in a 3 week immersion in a

developing country. Diversity is at the core of our education model and our students travel in groups that are socioeconomically, racially, and ethnically diverse. Students return home to practically apply lessons from their

experience abroad to college and beyond through a follow-on “Alumni Ambassador” leadership program during their senior year. Our program motivates students to excel academically and provides them with

practical knowledge and inter-personal skills that support them to be resilient through the challenging transition to college. We use a sliding scale fee-for-service model to make experiential education abroad accessible to students from all socioeconomic

backgrounds. Over 80% of our operating costs are covered by program fees.

WHO WE SERVE

6

We believe that closing the achievement gap requires not only providing low-income youth with opportunities that will set them on a path towards success, but also providing them with experiences that allow them to operate comfortably across socioeconomic lines. It is just as important for students from more affluent backgrounds to understand the realities low income communities face in this country as internationally.

OUR ALUMNI

COLLEGE PERSISTENCE

Out-of-the-classroom educational experiences that develop social and emotional competencies are an important precursor to college persistence. Our students develop self-awareness, social aware-ness, resilience, critical thinking, and responsible decision-making abilities that directly contribute to their success in college. The following data reflects our program impact on low income students.

ALUMNI AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Global Glimpse students return from the program inspired and motivated to give back to their community and determined to ensure that more students experience the life changing opportunity offered by Global Glimpse. Each year, close to 50% of our alumni are admitted to our competitive Alumni Ambassador program.

Our Alumni Ambassador program consists of 5 leadership summits, allowing program alumni to network and engage with a diverse group of peers from across their regional community. Through the program, students further develop their leadership, presentation, and networking skills in preparation for college and their careers.

JOSÉ JAVIER (J.J.) LUJANO

2009 Global Glimpse Alumni

Santa Clara University, Class of 2014

“Global Glimpse has greatly influenced my career aspirations in public policy. I know that there’s great need in the world, and I’d like to be somebody who can help people... Not by doing stuff for them, but by helping them help themselves.”

ESTHER CHEUNG

2012 Global Glimpse Alumni

Pomona College, Class of 2017

“My trip gave me a sense of purpose. It gave me confidence knowing that once I got to college, I would be equipped and better informed to start tackling some of the issues I was exposed to on my trip. It made me start off college thinking, There are things bigger than myself... How can I use this time to create change?”

GLOBAL GLIMPSE LEADERS (GGLs)

Global Glimpse Leaders (GGLs) are program champions in our partner schools. GGLs dedicate 80+ hours during the school year and 2.5 weeks in the summer to support the Global Glimpse program. Since 2008, we have trained and supported over 270 GGLs to become more effective educators.

VITO CHIALA

Principal, Overfelt High School (San Jose, CA)

“I have seen a profound impact in both the maturity and leadership ability of my students who participate in Global Glimpse. Many of the highest achieving students from top high schools won’t even have the breadth of experiences and skills that these students have when they enter college. Global Glimpse provides students with an expanded world view and develops the compassion within them that our next generation needs to succeed as young global leaders.”

Global Glimpse is a community organization. The parents and guardians of our students provide strong support for our programs and they in turn are deeply impacted by the growth their sons and daughters experience.

CYNTHIA FRANCIS

2012 Global Glimpse Parent (San Francisco, CA)

“My daughter came back with an expanded view of how her own experiences can help her create change in the world. Several of our family members have commented on how she’s grown in to such a stronger leader. She had leadership skills before the trip, but the program allowed her to grow even more confident and reflective about her actions as a global citizen. She came home extremely grateful for the experience and even more grateful and supportive towards her family and the local community.”
