The preferred method is the Ride Submission Form in the Members Only section of the web site, www.nmts.org. Enter ride description and click “Submit.” I must approve a ride at least 72 hours before the proposed start. I work full time and will not, in general, approve rides for the website, The FreeWheel, or the blast before Wed. each week. Rides that require more extensive preparation (multi-day, out-of-state, or out-of-country) should be proposed much further in advance. The alternative is to provide the information by email or phone ([email protected], 247-4866). In that case, copy The FreeWheel editor (Bill Thompson, [email protected]) and webmaster (Will Ferrell, [email protected]). See specific info to provide under how to propose a ride section below. --Guidelines to propose or make changes to a weekly NMTS ride

***UPCOMING ONE TIME RIDES***
--Oct. 3 (Sat.): Explore Scenic Sandoval County - Beginners Ride (D-pace, flat, 30 miles), starting promptly at 9 am at Sandia Pueblo Railrunner Station on NM 313to Algodones and back. Join us for a fun, scenic, social ride of approximately 30 miles. This ride is mostly flat with wonderful scenery to
enjoy. We will have short rest stops, but please be sure to bring plenty of water. We will maintain a pace of approximately 12 mph, but all levels are welcome and no slower riders will be left behind. NOTE: This is the first Saturday of Balloon Fiesta. While the balloons may be finished by the time we start riding, please be prepared for traffic congestion and possible detours. You may need to allow more travel time than normal to arrive on time. Chris Marsh, 505 891-3464
--Oct. 3 (Sat.): El Malpais (x-pace, minor hills, 59 miles), starting 9 am at intersection of I-40 and NM 117 - Exit 89, just east of Grants, NM. The ride heads south on NM 117, along the eastern edge of the El Malpais lava beds. This is a two-lane road, but the pavement is good and there is very little traffic. At mile 18, we will stop and take a break at La Ventana natural arch, which is the largest in the state. Riders can turn around here for 36 miles round trip, or continue on to Lava Falls for a round-trip distance of 59 miles. The scenery is fantastic, with wonderful views over the lava beds to the west and the steep cliffs of mesas to the east. There are restrooms at La Ventana, but no water or other services along the route. If you have a non-riding friend or family member who would like to volunteer, I am looking for someone to drive SAG for this ride, to bring along water and snacks. Please call Bill at 299-0302 or email at [email protected] if you can help. After lunch, we head east on US 60, then turning north on NM 41 for the last 11 miles back to Estancia. The route has some minor hills, but is mostly flat. Bill Thompson, 505-299-0302
--Oct. 24 (Sat.): Fabulous Foothills Frolic (x-pace, frequent, steep hills, 37 miles), starting 9 am at Skyview Center on NE corner of Tramway and Indian School. You may have heard about the
“Fingers,” well this ride will do all three with some “Hangnails” thrown in for variety. The ride will be through the Eastern Foothills of Albuquerque on paved roads. Don't be deceived by the ride's name, it has numerous short and very steep climbs of 20%. Refueling stop is at the base of the Tram. After this rest stop we will ride up to the La Luz Trailhead. This section of the ride climbs 950 feet in 2 ¼ miles, with an average grade of 8.4%. An option for those not wanting to ride to La Luz Trailhead is to ride down to Sandia Casino and back; easier grades, but you get the same mileage. Total climbing is about 4,000 feet. Cue sheets are available on club web site. There will be frequent rest stops to wait for the slower riders so no one gets lost as there are many frequent turns. If you have never done this ride before, now is your chance to come on out. As an added incentive, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement suitable for framing. Tom Sullivan, 505-299-6545

9. The Thurs. 8 am Get Fitter Faster Ride went on vacation beginning in June; ‘vacation’ will end in October with Eric as the ride leader. 10. Thurs. 9 am Westside ride with a Twist (B-C pace, 35 miles), starting at Alameda Open Space one hour after Ed and Don’s Thursday ride (so we will meet up with them). Saul Segura
([email protected]). The ride will explore various parts of the city and surrounding areas and emphasize a variety of routes and avoid monotony. Pace will be varied as well but we will try to maintain a B pace. All riders are welcome and there will be no drops so the pace will be adjusted so the group stays together. The ride will stop to address any mechanical issues and proceed only after these are resolved. We will have regroups at the top of any hill or as needed to ensure the group is together. Rest stops will be as needed and lunch at the end or decided enroute by the group. The ride may be swept from time to time as we have volunteers to do so.
11. Fri. 9 am Badass Coffee Ride (B-paced, minor hills, 30 miles), starting at Alameda Open Space. Route changes each week and ranges from 25-50 miles and stops at one or two coffee houses for a beverage and snack (e.g., Flying Star, Starbucks), but will not include lunch. This should reduce the total ride time to 3 hours or less. The goal is a pace line of 16-19 mph with the group staying together. We will rotate through the lead position so everyone has the opportunity to set the pace (no drops). Routes will avoid traffic and stop lights as much as possible and not include excessive climbing. An example route might be Loma Larga to 528 and 550, stop at Badass Coffee House with return on NM313. David Jewell, 505-710-8350.
