Miramar College Marches

in MLK Parade

Classified staff, faculty, alumni and students were among the three dozen volunteers who took part in the downtown 2016 Martin

NEWS

Luther King, Jr. Parade on Sunday, Jan. 17. Our float was a big hit for onlookers as we marched down Harbor Drive and ended near Seaport Village. A photo of the Miramar College float appeared on the front page of the Jan. 19 edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Those representing Miramar College wore neon green shirts with the slogan “Let’s Close the Equity Gap.” They also held up similar signs. The San Diego Community College District took part along with board members, all 3 colleges and Continuing Education. Miramar College staff also attended 3 separate MLK breakfast celebrations.

Miramar College Mentioned in Orlando

Sentinel

On January 4, the Orlando Sentinel published an article on the benefits of enrolling in a technical school/community college vs. for-profit schools. Miramar College was used as an example and our aviation program was featured. The

Spring Marketing

Campaign

Our spring enrollment campaign included bus shelters located throughout our service area. A sample is featured below. You may have seen the ads while tooling around town! The closest one to campus is located on the west side of Black Mountain Road just north of Hillery Drive. The College also ran our television commercial on CBS 8 with the spot airing during NFL Today just prior to the AFC Championship game between New England and Denver.

Marty Hight Steps Down

After 15 years of service to the Miramar College Foundation, 12 of those years as president, Marty Hight has stepped down as board president effective January 22.

Sarah Yang, vice president at Wells Fargo, has accepted the role of Miramar College Foundation Board president for a term of one year. The College wishes Marty the best as he spends more time with his children and grandchildren. His service to Miramar College and the thousands of students he assisted are truly appreciated.

Vets-2-Jets Presentation

Penney McGuire-Newell stopped by the Miramar College Foundation Board meeting on January 22 to present a $25,000.00 check on behalf of San Diego Gas & Electric. The funds will be used to assist Veterans through the College’s Vets-2-Jets program.

Dr. DK Wu Visit

Dr. DK Wu, managing director for the Chinese Association of American Community Colleges, visited our campus on Jan. 14. Dr. Wu visited us as part of his Fulbright research project-Non-peer Collaboration Model – an innovative approach to improve international education for American community colleges and four-year Chinese universities. This

model focuses on working with community colleges to improve their international exposures with China and Taiwan to promote the merits of community colleges to Chinese students (and parents) to attract them to select community colleges as the first step of their higher education in the States.

In addition the project explores education collaboration with Chinese four-year universities to introduce the possibility of community college graduates transferring to Chinese four-year universities to make Chinese universities motivated to work with community colleges in joint seminars, teaching, and research, etc. Dr. Wu met with our staff, including President Hsieh, and learned all about the future plans for the Miramar College campus.

Classified Staff Development Week

Classified Staff Development Week was held from Jan. 11 – Jan. 15. Forty-five attended the Jan. 11 breakfast, while 15 attended the Remember More memory techniques workshop. And finally, 11 brave souls attended the Jan. 15 Zumba class.

Flex Week

Just prior to the start of the new semester, Miramar College held a Flex Week (1/19-1/22) with a number of educational activities for faculty and staff to attend. The week ended with a new faculty/staff luncheon in K1-107.

PEOPLE

Miramar College basketball player Javan Perry was named PCAC Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 13. Perry, who hails from Hall High School in Little Rock, Arkansas and originally signed with the University of Arkansas, led the Jets to the consolation championship of the 43rd Annual Santa Barbara City College Classic. The 6-foot-1 guard was selected to the all-tournament team. Perry led all scorers with 25 points, including eight 3-point baskets, as the Jets edged fellow PCAC Northern Division member Palomar 75-74 in the consolation championship game. Perry averaged 19 points, four rebounds and three steals per game in the tournament.

Vincent Ngo is the new Financial Aid Director for Miramar College. Vincent began his position on Jan. 11. He joins us with a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience. Vincent has 25 years of experience working in Financial Aid and has served as a Financial Aid Director for almost 3 years. In addition, he has held almost every position available in

financial aid and has worked at various community colleges such as Santa Ana College, Pasadena City College and Orange Coast College. Angela Smith

is the new instructional lab technician in Child Development. The following faculty began their new assignments on Jan. 11: Kelly Spoon, assistant professor of

Mathematics; Brenda Wilborn, assistant professor of Mathematics; Scott Moller,

assistant professor of administration of justice; Alex Mata, assistant professor of communication studies; Denise Maduli-Williams, assistant professor of English/ ESOL; Jae Alyson Calanog, assistant professor of physics/astronomy; Dawn Diskin, assistant professor of accounting;

Hau Nguyen, assistant professor of computer and

information science; Jessica McCambly, assistant professor of fine art; Rodrigo Gomez, assistant professor of English.
