Universal Viewer

Product Data Sheet

Helping enhance access and productivity

GE Healthcare

Introduction

With the introduction of Universal Viewer for Centricity PACS, GE Healthcare delivers a powerful unified workspace for radiologists and clinicians. Universal Viewer brings together intelligent tools, enhanced usability and access, advanced visualization and breast imaging to help optimize productivity.

Unlike disparate PACS and 3-D systems, Universal Viewer helps to increase efficiency by simplifying information access with a single image repository across 2-D and 3-D studies, enabling holistic oncology and other specialty work flows, with easy access to prior exams. Universal Viewer is designed to work with Centricity PACS and is available in a virtual environment to help organizations maximize the use

of their current data center space.

Over 3,000 organizations trust Centricity Imaging Solutions because GE Healthcare delivers high-quality service, reliability, and technology innovation, which allow providers to help reduce the cost of ownership today while preparing for the challenges of the future.

Helping Improve Productivity with Intelligent Productivity Tools

Smart Reading Protocols

1 A standard feature of Universal Viewer,

Smart Reading Protocols (SRP) represents a new way for radiologists

to work with hanging protocols. SRP make hanging protocol creation and application simple to use with drag and drop set up tools. They

are designed to decrease image setup time, helping to increase radiologist productivity.

As part of the normal review process, a radiologist can set up images based on their preferences and “teach” the system using a one-click learning feature. The next time the radiologist opens an exam of a similar type, SRP automatically applies the previous learnings to “hang” the image to their

preference.

The SRP uses a set of machine-learning algorithms that track the way a user or a group of users set up images – in particular, workflows. SRP makes inferences and hanging recommendations based on

preferences that it learns from the users. This is designed to help improve image setup efficiency in contrast to the traditional hanging protocol function in PACS software.

All data associated with an exam is evaluated by the SRP engine, not just information in the DICOM header. SRP uses data that is both coded and in free text that helps to expand the potential accuracy and specificity of protocol selection. SRP were developed in conjunction with GE’s Global Research center.

Adaptive Streaming Engine

The adaptive streaming engine

helps generate rapid image display by enabling adjustments for bandwidth and device compute power to provide the most efficient way to deliver images.

The adaptive streaming engine evaluates the format in which images are stored (uncompressed, compressed in JPEG, JPEG2000, or

RLE formats) as well as the network conditions between the data store and the viewer – to deliver images to the user’s screen in the most efficient manner.

All patient and study information transmissions use SSL encryption.

Enhanced Usability and Access

2 Universal Viewer’s web-client

provides

radiologists, referring physicians, and other clinicians access to the system from any location.

The study list serves as the hub of the workflows and is browser accessible, providing fast access to vital study and patient information, including order data, notes, and reports.

By selecting a study from the study list, the viewer is launched for study viewing. Utilizing the newly re-architected Adaptive Streaming Engine, the first image is displayed to the user within two (2) seconds3.

From that point forward, a user can freely navigate the study content with the viewer adaptively, helping provide rapid delivery of the currently viewed image in the best available quality. Universal Viewer can access the historical studies directly from the archive if studies are not readily available in the local data store.

With the web-based viewer,

organizations can provide referring physicians and clinicians direct access2 to their PACS systems or

provide access with tight connectivity through an EMR. All referrers can have the same advanced post-processing capabilities as the radiologist, including the ability to consult large datasets from their practice desk. This helps enhance turn-around time on reading. Universal Viewer additionally offers security and preference settings to define what external users can do, helping to enhance the industry standard security functionality of patient data. Universal

Viewer’s web-based architecture enables easy administration from virtually anywhere2.

Universal Viewer’s scalable, flexible architecture provides tight

connectivity

with Centricity Clinical Archive4 and

various RIS and EMR systems for one-click access to images.

Advanced Tools in a Single Solution

Advanced Visualization

Powered by Advantage

Workstation (AW)

Universal Viewer provides an enhanced user experience for advanced visualization. It offers a single source for post-processing applications for MIP/MPR, PET-CT, vessel analysis, automated bone removal, integrated registration, and oncology quantification. This decreases the need to log in to multiple applications and retrieve images for comparison from stand-alone “mini PACS” systems, allowing radiologists to read exams more efficiently. This also helps increase IT productivity by reducing requests for DICOM resends and image moves between systems.

The advanced visualization applications powered by AW are combined with the system’s hanging protocols to help reduce manual per-exam setup.

Preprocessed images are displayed on the monitor according to the radiologist’s preset specifications, helping to decrease set-up time and support rapid reading.

(4)

Advanced Mammography

Universal Viewer provides access to an advanced mammography work-flow application, which supports

screening and diagnostic work flows and display of multimodality images on the same solution. This allows mammographers and radiologists

to access patient history and relevant priors.

The mammography work-flow application provides support for the newest IHE profiles for

mammography

images. This helps reduce the need to read images on separate

workstation solutions.

Support for reading tomosynthesis and CESM images is also available, helping reduce the need to

maintain separate, stand-alone workstations and separate databases.

Enterprise-Wide Access

2,5 Universal Viewer provides

enterprise and community-wide access by providing a choice of web-based and Zero Footprint (ZFP) client configurations. The Web Client is designed to provide diagnostic capabilities to radiologists and display in multiple, user-defined monitor configurations, supporting up to six (6) monitors.

The ZFP viewer delivers clinicians access to images and reports for non-diagnostic viewing. The ZFP is a true HTML5 application that requires zero installation, with no download of any software and zero administrative rights required on the end user’s device. A PC, Mac®,or an iPad® can be used with

a variety of browsers.

Summary of Benefits

Volume-Based Licensing

Universal Viewer optimizes radiologist work-flow efficiency through the use of advanced study layouts, multiple presentation states, intelligent hanging protocols with variable-sized, asymmetrical windows and

“copies” of windows, 2-D stack-based reading tools, and

3-D reconstructions.

Within a few mouse clicks, a referrer accesses the same software and clinical tools as radiologists. A dedicated referrer role provides important results at a glance: report and diagnosis, key images, and scanned documents, as well as access to the patient study and set of viewing tools.

The overall user interface is highly customizable to meet explicit needs and preferences of the users.

Our volume-based license model does not differentiate between the radiologist, radiographer, clinician, or referring physician. All users have access to the same user interface, tool set, and databases, with specific functions and privileges granted for each user or group

of users. With volume-based licensing, wherever users log into the system, either via WAN or LAN, they will have access to their personalized toolbars and the hanging protocols that are tied to their logon.
