Introducing “My safe place”

supported by Heartmath Educational Programmes

(2)

Teachers and pupils in Northern Ireland, now have the

opportunity to join thousands of teachers and pupils

worldwide, using the innovative journey to “my safe place”

and the Heartmath Educational Programmes.

These programmes help to reduce stress, raise academic

performance and improve classroom behaviour...

“Schools today are constantly seeking ways in which to

predict and prevent situations developing which have a

negative impact on the learning ability of children..

This is a wonderful resource to help us unlock the complex

combination of life experiences that restrict children’s

development and ability to learn…”

Welcome...

Many children in schools today and especially those with learning difficulties often experience a heightened stress response. The anxiety created can have detrimental effects not only on their cognitive function and learning skills but also behaviour, self esteem and performance. It is important we are more proactive in teaching children how to change their physiological response to stress and difficult situations.

“ it was like starting

my life all over again”

“Safe place makes me feel calm and I do my

work better...”

“ Our class thinks that safe place helps them with

their spelling. We know that because everyone

gets higher scores after we do safe place...”

Gary, age 11

What is “my safe place”?

One of the most important aspirations we all hold for our children is that they feel safe, content and calm at all times. Journey to “my safe place” is a 10 minute creative

visualisation audio cd which teachers use as part of their daily classroom routine. Pupils employ specific techniques learnt as part of the HeartMath programme and are encouraged to create a safe place in their imagination where they feel safe, loved and protected. This process allows them to create their perfect life in that safe place. Recent studies have shown this to be an important tool in emotional management for pupils of all ages.

What is this programme?

The emWave PC stress relief system is an award winning computer technology proven to enhance learning, performance and behaviour. It is used as part of the Resilient Educator Programme and for many teachers it has become an important and fun part of classroom behavioural management and exam preparation for both primary and secondary schools.

Using a fingertip or ear sensor which plugs into the USB

port of a computer, the software allows students to see how emotions and attitudes affect their heart-rhythm patterns and confirms if they are in a state of coherence. This feedback enables users to more effectively manage their stress levels and negative emotions, leading to improved cognitive performance, learning ability and creativity.

Heartmath Software

The emWave PC Stress Relief System with Patented Heart Rhythm Monitor will help teachers and students to transform stress and anxiety. Much more than a heart monitor this revolutionary technology guides you on how to achieve higher, more creative energy levels, less stress, and optimal health. HeartMath research has shown that emotions are reflected in our heart rhythm patterns. emWave PC is a software and hardware program which collects pulse data through an ear or finger sensor which plugs into your computer.

The program translates the information from your heart rhythms into user friendly graphics displayed on your computer screen.

• Watch your heart rhythms in real time. • See how emotions affect your heart rhythms. • Discover which emotions you can activate to more

effectively manage stress and boost vitality.

“Heartmath is a good relaxing criteria especially in

the mornings to set you up for the day ahead. It is

also useful for concentrating on your work...”

Adam, age 11

“I find it very useful because it offers

visual feedback. Students see the results

of their actions... and it is so easy to use”

V. Russell, Director of Student Counselling Services

“Typically I introduce the emWave as a

primary intervention to assist students in

developing the self-management skills needed

to cope with stress.

I find it very useful because it offers visual
