MONTH -Junior LAURA HERMAN (HALES CORNERS. WI/WHITNA~L) is the sports information athlete of the month for Februruy. During the month, Herman was first in the 50- and 1 00-yard freestyle events in a dual meet with Nebraska (2/ 1). She was also a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay team versus the Cornhuskers.At the Big Ten conference championship (2/ 13-15), Herman was the conference champion in the 50-yard free. shared In the conference titles in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. and was second as a member of the 200-yard medley relay team, fourth in the 400-yard medley relay and was sixth in the 100 free. Over-all, she scored 69 points at the Big Ten meet, contribut-Ing heavily to Minnesota's third place conference finish.

PREVIEW - Minnesota closes out the regular season With three home games. The Gophers host 23rd-ranked Wisconsin on Friday at 7 p.m. and Northwestern on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eighth-ranked Iowa comes to town on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. for the final regular season contest.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN -The 23rd-ranked Badgers fell to Northwestern 91-80 on Friday night in Evanston, Ill. The loss prevented the Badgers from moving into a first-place tie With Iowa in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes lost to third-place Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., 72-64 on Friday. Wisconsin's loss marked the end of the Badgers' six-game winning streak and signified the seventh consecutive time they have lost in Evanston. The Badgers are outscoring their opponents by an average of 9.0 ppg.
PLAYERS TO WATCH-Junior Robin Threatt is one of four Badgers scoring in double figures. Threatt is the

team's leading scorer with a 21.0 ppg average. She has led the Badgers in scoring in 15 contests and scored a career-high 30 points in the season opener at Iowa State. Senior Mynette Clark is second on the team in scoring with 14.4 ppg, followed by freshman Barb Franke with 11.2 ppg and senior Michele Kozelka with 10.0 ppg. Kozelka also leads the team in re-bounding with 7.3 rpg.
SERIES VS. WISCONSIN - Minnesota leads the series, 16-10. Wisconsin won the first game in the 1991-92 series. The teams split the series last year.
LAST MEETING - Minnesota fell to the Badgers 82-72 in Madison before a Wisconsin Fieldhouse all-time record crowd of 4,308. The Gophers were led in scoring by senior DANA JOUBERT (DETROIT. MI/ST. MARTIN DEPORRES) with 18 points and sophomore CAROL ANN SHUDLICK (APPLE VALLEY, MN /APPLE VALLEY) with 17. Minnesota led by as many as five
points in the first half. But the Badgers went on an 18-4 run. holding Minnesota scoreless for over four min-utes of play to take a 39-25 lead with 4:22 left in the first half. The Gophers closed the margin to five again in the second half before the Badgers pulled away. WISCONSIN COACH - Mary Murphy (Northwestern '80) is in her sixth year as head coach at Wisconsin. Her overall and school record is 60-99. Murphy served as a head assistant and recruiting coordinator at Notre Dame for six years prior to being named head coach at Wisconsin.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN -The Wildcats upset Wisconsin 91-80 in Evanston. Ill. on Friday night. Northwestern was led in scoring by senior Michelle Savage with 36 points and 15 rebounds, the top performance in the Big Ten this year. The Wildcats have won their last five contests.
PLAYERS TO WATCH -Savage leads Northwestern in scoring with 19.4 ppg and is one of four Wildcats averaging in double figures. Sophomore Patricia Babcock is second in scoring with 13.5 ppg and is the leading rebounder with 8.3 rpg. Freshman Maureen Holohan averages 13.0 ppg and sophomore Moira Kennelly averages 10.3 ppg.
SERIES VS. NORTHWESTERN -The Wildcats lead the series, 19-6, and have won the last eight matchups. Minnesota's last victory over Northwestern was on Jan. 8, 1988 at Williams Arena.
LAST MEETING -The Gophers fell to the Wildcats 85-71 in Evanston on Feb. 7 despite 28 points from
Shudlick. Shudlick scored 17 of her 28 points and the first eight Gopher points in the second half. Minnesota fell behind by as many as 17 points midway through the second half before running off 12 unanswered points to pull within four. 62-58, with 8:29 to play. The Wildcats reeled off 14 unanswered points to reclaim a
17 -point lead with 4:04 to play.
NORTHWESTERN COACH - Don Perrelli (Southern Connecticut '61) is in his eighth year at Northwestern and posts a 135-87 record with the Wildcats. Perrelli has also served as head coach at St. John's and

REVIEW-vs. Dlinois - Sophomore guard Mandy Cunningham scord 19 points to lead Illinois to a 72-61 victory over Minnesota in Champaign, Ill. on Friday night. The Gophers shot only 20-of-75 from the field for a season-low 26.7 percent. Shudllck led Minnesota with 18 points and nine rebounds.
vs. Purdue - Senior MaChelle Joseph scored 27 points to lead 14th-ranked Purdue to a 78-63 victory over the Gophers Sunday in West Lafayette. Ind. Shudllck led Minnesota with 20 points and 12 re-bounds and freshman LORI LAWLER (ROCHESTER. MN/LOURDES) added a career-high 14 points. SEASON
NOTES-SHUDLICK SHINES - Shudlick's 20 points against Purdue gave her 505 for the season, making her only the third Gopher to reach that milestone. Also reaching 500 points in a season were Laura Coenen, who had 708 in 1984-85 and 581 in 1982-83, and MollyTadich, who had 511 in 1985-86. Shudlick has scored 790 career points to date.
ON THE ROAD - Minnesota closed out its road sched-ule over the weekend and will play its remaining games in Williams Arena. The Gophers' two losses over the weekend brought their Big Ten road losing streak to 37 games dating back to the 1987-88 season.
LINEUP CHANGE -After using the same starting lineup for nine consecuitve games, there were some changes over the weekend. Freshman CARA PEARSON (ST. PAUL. MN/HARDING) recorded the first two starts of her college career at Illinois and Purdue while sopho-more CRYSTAL FLINT (ROXBURY,MA/SOUTH BOS-TON) also notched her first start. checking into the starting lineup at Illinois. Pearson recorded a career-high 10 rebounds at Illinois while Flint recorded a career-high seven rebounds in that contest.
SHUDLICK MISSES START -Shudlick missed her first start of the season on Friday at Illinois. She came off the bench against the Illini and scored a team-high 18 points in 33 minutes. Shudlick did not start be-cause she missed Thursday night's practice due to illness. She returned to the starting lineup against Purdue.
JOUBERT MISSES GAMES -Joubert was absent from the lineup in both games over the weekend. She aggravated her right knee in practice on Thursday. Joubert had anterior eructate reconstructive surgery on that knee in high school and wears a brace. She did not play in Sunday's game against Purdue for
disciplin-ary reasons.

GYMNASTICS
GREAT PLAINS IS NEXT STOP ON U.S. TOUR-- With trips to the northeast. southeast and southwest United States behind them, the women's gymnastics team will continue its cross country tour this weekend when it competes in an Oklahoma invitational Sunday in Norman, Okla.
Ball State will also compete in the meet, which will begin at 2 p.m.
OKLAHOMA NOTES -The Sooners are coming off a second-place finish in a triangular meet at Missouri, where they scored 188.45 and fmished just behind host Missouri, which scored 188.50. Iowa State was third with a 184.30 score. Freshman Shannon Rogers has Oklahoma's top all-around (38.35) and vault (9. 70) scores this season. Freshman Tracey Cole has an all-around high of 38.00 and highs of 9.80 in the beam and 9.75 in the bars and floor exercise.
SERIES - Oklahoma leads 3-1, having won three in a row. In the last meeting between the teams, the Sooners won 187.45-185.60 on Feb. 17. 1989 at Florida's annual Shands Invitational.
IOWA NOTES -The Hawkeyes edged Minnesota for the seventh and final region spot last season and look A e battling Minnesota for that spot again this season.

defeated Illinois 187.60-184.80 on Saturday. Sophomore Sandy Stengel won the all-around with a 37.35 score, while senior Lori Cole, a defending Big Ten all-around co-champion. was third with a 37.00score.
SERIES - Minnesota leads 23-5. The Hawkeyes won earlier this season. 182.95-180.30 at Missouri's Shakespeare Invitational.
BALL STATE NOTES -The Cardinals. who have a season high of 183.35. lost 184.65-182.10 at Bowling Green on Friday. The team's top all-arounder is senior Carrie DuBois, whose season best is 37 .40. She leads the team in the vault (9.31 average), balance beam (9.26 average) and floor exercise (9.27 average). Fresh-man Teresa Ijams has posted the team's top uneven bars score (9.55) and leads the Cardinals with a 9.11 average in the uneven bars.
SERIES -This will be the first meeting between the teams.
MINNESOTA CLINGING TO REGIONAL HOPES -The Gophers raised their regional qualifying score from 185.00 to 185.61 with their 185.45 score on Saturday. Although respectable, that score leaves little margin for error the rest of the season.

Last week. Minnesota ranked ninth in the region ven teams will qualify for regionals) with a 185.00 regional average. This week's official rankings will be released on Wednesday. but Iowa. which had a 184.53 regional average and ranked 12th in the region last

week. scored 187.60 on Saturday to raise its regional average to 185.69--just ahead of the Gophers.
Minnesota has four meets remaining, with just one of those, the March 13 meet against Michigan. at home. The Gophers' away meets include Sunday's meet at Oklahoma and a Monday. March 23 dual at AriZona State. The season ends March 27-28in East Lansing, Mich. at the Big Ten championships.
FORMULA TO MAKE REGIONALS- If the Gophers score 188 or better in two of their three meets prior to Big Tens, 187 or higher in the third meet, and post a season best at the conference championship meet, they should make the seven-team Central Region field. GOPHERS KNOCK OFF 121 WASHINGTON, 122 NEW MEXICO - More teams (six) took part in the Paul Mitchell/UClA Invitational on Saturday than in any other regular season meet that Minnesota has or will compete in this season, making it an opportune time to pick up a few wins. The Gophers did just that. grab-bing second place in the meet with a 185.45 score and outpointing 21st-ranked Washington (3rd-185.40) and 22nd-ranked New Mexico (4th-185.35) in the process. Minnesota also beat Cal-Fullerton (5th-183.15) and Cal-Santa Barbara (6th-179.65). Ninth-ranked UCLA scored 189.85 to win the meet.
Ironically, the Gophers' worst event all season, the vault, proved better than any of the competitors' vault lineups on Saturday. Minnesota scored a meet-high 45.90 in the vault, with UClA (45.60) and Washington (44.85) finishing second and third, respectively. The Gophers tied for fourth in the uneven bars (46.45). were second in the beam (47.10). and were sixth in the floor exercise (46.00).
CSISZTU FINISHES THIRD ALL-AROUND - Sopho-more ZSUSZANNA CSISZTU (PIUSBOROSJENO, HUNGARY/VOROSMARTY) scored 37.70 and finished third all-around. She tied for third in the uneven bars with a 9. 70 score and in the balance beam with a 9.60 score. Sophomore MONIKA JUHASZ-NAGY
(BUDAPESf. HUNGARY /VOROSMARIY) tied for second in the vault with a 9.45 mark and equaled a personal season best in the balance beam with a 9.50 tally. Junior KRISTIN ALLSTADT (APPLE VALLEY. MN) led
the Gophers in the floor exercise with a 9.35 score. Five Gophers competed all-around-marking the sixth time in eight meets that head coach Katalin Deli has used four all-arounders. On Saturday, Csisztu, Juhasz-Nagy (37.10), Allstadt (36.85), and freshman MICHELLE RIEGER (MARIE'ITA. GA/WESTFIELD-HOUSTON. TX) (36.25) formed the all-around quartet for the third straight meet and fourth time this season. Juhasz-Nagy has now competed all-around in 21 meets in a row .

GOPHERS FINISH NINTH BIG TEN MEET-The Minnesota women's track team finished ninth for the second consecutive season at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships. Minnesota improved its point total from a year ago despite an additional team in the meet and not returning a single point from last year's meet. The Gophers got scoring performances from four athletes to reach 22 points.

Athlete of the Meet and Athlete of the Year: Tonja Buford, Illinois
Freshman of the Year: Julie Cote. Wisconsin Coach of the Year: Gary Winckler, Illinois OWEN JUMPS TO SECOND-Junior VAL OWEN (McCOOK. NE) entered the Big Ten indoor meet with the conference's best mark in the long jump at 19-3 1/ 4. She nearly duplicated that mark last Friday, jump-ing 19-2 1/2 in the final. That was good enough for second place at the Big Ten meet, behind a fteldhouse record of 20-7 by Regina Frye of Indiana. Owen became the first Gopher to ever jump 19 feet indoors this
season. and has now accomplished that feat three times.
ROWE, ROWE, ROWE TO TIDRD-Senior CHRIS ROWE (SIOUX FALLS, SD/O'GORMAN) scored her highest finish ever at a Big Ten meet when she finished third in the mile with a time of 4:52.85. Rowe's top time of the season is 4:43.67, which is second all-time on the Minnesota list and an NCAA provisional qualify-ing mark. She will have to walt until next Monday to she if that time is good enough to send her to India-napolis and the 1992 NCAA indoor meet.
5000 METERS IS PURE BLIS~unior SUSAN BLISS (ST. CHARLES. MO/FRANCIS HOWELL) broke
Minnesota's oldest varsity record on the board Satur-day, considering the events that are competed in on a regular basis. In an exciting finish to the 5000 meters, Bliss finished third in 16:37.10, which was only .97 seconds slower than winner Tracy Dahl of Iowa. That time is a new Minnesota varsity record, breaking the

old standard of the late Rocky Racette, who ran a time of 16:39.65 back in 1980. The time is also an NCAA

provisional qualifying mark. so BUss will have to wait • with Rowe to see if she can also go to Indianapolis next weekend.SCHOLTES SCORES FIRST POINTS-Senior STEPH SCHOLTES (APPlE VALLEY. MN/ROSEMOUNI1 continued to improve her personal best in the shot put at the Big Ten meet and it paid off with her first-ever Big Ten points for Minnesota. Scholtes heaved the shot 46-10 1/4. good for fifth place and a new personal best by three inches. Scholtes ends her Minnesota indoor career seventh on Minnesota's indoor shot put list.
NCAA MEET IS NEXT WEEKEND-The 1992 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship is Mar. 13-14in Indianapolis. Susan Bliss and Chris Rowe have provisional qualifying marks and will find out next Monday if they are fast enough to qualify for the cham-pionship.
TENNIS
GOLDEN GOPHERS, GOLDEN GUSTIES TO SQUARE OFF FRIDAY- The women's tennis team wt11 take on in-state rival Gustavus Adolphus on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the 98th Street Racquet Club. Minnesota (5-2 overall. 3-1 Big Ten) is off to its best start since 1988-89, when the Gophers won their first six matches enroute to a 19-10 season. Following Friday's match, Minnesota will be off until spring break, when it will play matches at Miami-Ohio (March 26), Ohio State (March 28) and Indiana (March 29).
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS NOTES -Gustavus, 4-3 this season after shutting out Augustana (S.D.) and South Dakota State on Friday and South Dakota on Sunday, is a perennial Division III power. Last year the Gusties finished second in the Division III national tournament after winning the national title in 1990.
Senior Heidi Rostberg. who earned Division III all-American honors while playing No. 2 singles last year. has an injured shoulder that has kept her out of action this season. Head coach Jon Carlson has rotated the team's singles and doubles Uneups. Senior Dawn Parmley will likely play at No. 1 singles, where she has posted a 2-0 record thus far. Parmley Is 1-0 at No.2 singles. Freshman Tracy Erickson, 2-3 at No. 2 singles, is the probable starter in that position.
Parmley will team with either senior Molly McCormick or senior Sheryl Russeth at No. 1 doubles.
SERIES- The Gophers lead 7-0. Minnesota won 8-1 last season.
MINNESOTA DOWNS PENN STATE- The Gophers took on new conference member Penn State for the first time on Saturday and came out of University Park, Pa.

Moe upped her team-leading singles record to 16-6 with the win. Senior SOFIE OLSSON (ASMUNDTORP, SWEDEN/ GULLSTRANDSKOLAN) became the second player on the team to reach double figures in singles wins, raising her record to 10-7 with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of the Lady Lions' Kerr! Kohr 6-1. 6-3 at No. 2 singles. It was Olsson's fourth win in her last five matches and fifth in her last six matches.Freshmen SUSAN CULIK (CHAPIN. SC) and SHANNA JOHNSON (BLOOMINGTON. MN /

MINNESOTA AT AGGIE INVITATIONAL-The Minne-sota softball team (6-8) will travel to College Station, Texas for the three-day Aggie Invitational I which begins ~day. The Gophers are making their third trip to . a s A&M in just over a year. Minnesota will see two
teams ranked ahead of them in the NCAA preseason poll. as well as a Big Ten foe. The Gophers' games against Missouri and Texas A&M give them two oppor-tunities to improve their mark against ranked competi-tion (1-7).
A&M FORMAT-The Aggie Invitational I is a 10-team, round-robin tournament with places being decided by record. Each of the teams will have three games on Friday. Saturday and Sunday. Minnesota's schedule in Texas:

Abrahamson, who is in her 13th season. Northern Illinois is led by junior pitcher Kristin Vanderhouten and junior infielders Lori Reimer and Stacy Paller.
SERIEs-Northern llltnots leads 2-0. The two teams last played Oct .. 10. 1981. when Northern Illinois defeated Minnesota 2-1.
ILLINOIS STATE-The Redbirds (2-3) played in Arizona State's tournament two weekends ago in Tempe, Ariz. Illinois State defeated Cal Poly Pomona and Northwest-em while falling to Arizona State, Utah State and Oklahoma State. Illinois State was led in Arizona by Nicole Rule (.400, 2 RBI), Jodi Burch (.333, 3 RBI) and Monica McGlaughlin (1-1, 0.44 ERA). Redbird coach Melinda Fischer has a nine-year career record of
230-136.
SERIEs-Illinois State leads 3-1. The Redbirds won the last meeting 1-0 back on Oct. 10, 1981.
TEXAS A&M-The lOth-ranked Aggtes (8-4) have won six straight since suffering a 2-4 fate at the Arizona Softball Classic. Texas A&M lost to California. UCLA. Arizona and Arizona State tn Tucson, as did Minnesota. Senior pitcher Mlssl Young, the NCAA's leader with 36 wins in 1991, was 0-31n Tuscan and has been suffer-ing from back pain. She did not pitch in the Aggies' 6-0 run at Northeast Louisiana's tournament Feb. 22-24 and is questionable for this weekend. Senior infielder Rhonda Halbert is A&M's leading hitter with a .387 batting average. Head coach Bob Brock has 500 coaching victories in his 13-year career and ts seventh on the NCAA active list.
SERIEs-Texas A&M leads 8-3. The Gophers and Aggies split two games in 1991. In the quarterfinals of the Pony Tournament, Texas A&M used a four-hitter by Miss! Young to defeat Minnesota 4-0. The Gophers gained their revenge by defeating the Aggtes 3-0 In the NCAA regional at College Station. Robin Bumpus used the help of an NCAA record-tying three double plays to throw a four-hit shutout, while Kart Blank and Mischel Doerr drove in the runs for Minnesota. The Win broke Minnesota's seven-game losing streak against A&M. which dated back to 1979.
MISSOURI-The Tigers (4-0) opened their 1992 season last weekend with doubleheader sweeps of St. Louis and Columbia College. Missouri is currently ranked sixth in the country and is led by all-American senior pitcher Karen Snelgrove. Snelgrove, who pitched two

one-hit shutouts last weekend. led the NCAA in 1991 with a 0.18 earned run average. Head coach Jay Miller is in his eighth season at Missouri. Miller picked up his 300th victory as the Tigers' mentor last weekend.
SERIEs-Missouri leads 7-2. In the NCAA era of softball. the Tigers and Gophers have split four games. Missouri won both meetings in 1991. defeating Minne-sota 3-2 in a ninth-inning tiebreaker at the Metrodome and 3-0 at the Mizzou Invitational in Columbia. Mo. Tiger ace Karen Snelgrove pitched complete-game victories in both games.

NEBRASKA-The Cornhuskers (0-0) will be opening their season with play in the Aggie Invitational I. This will be the second straight season that Nebraska has seen Minnesota in its first tournament of the season. In 1991. Nebraska opened with the Metrodome Softball Classic. and won the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Missouri in the final.
SERIEs-Nebraska leads 8-5. The Cornhuskers defeated the Gophers 3-0 at the Metrodome in 1991 and went on to win the Metrodome Softball Classic. NORTHEAST LOUISIANA-The Lady Indians (9-7) have played more games in 1992 than any other school in the tournament. Included in their 1992 record are two shutout losses to tournament host Texas A&M at the Northeast Louisiana Mardi Gras Classic. Head coach Rosemary Holloway has a record of 171-257-1 as the coach at Northeast Louisiana.

SERIEs-Minnesota leads 31-8. The Gophers have won more games against Ohio State than any other school. Minnesota has a current six-game winning streak against the Buckeyes, including a 5-0 mark in 1991. The Gophers scored a 6-0 victory at the 1991 Arizona Softball Classic, the only non-conference meeting between the two schools in the last 10 years. Minnesota swept the four-game Big Ten series in the Twin Cities last April, outscoring the Buckeyes 13-2 in the four games.

~ALKS ALLOWED-In 1991. the Gophers gave up - r walks than any Big Ten team in conference play. Minnesota's BRENDA BIXBY (ESTI-IERVILLE. IA). ROBIN BUMPUS (MUNNSVILLE. NY /STOCKBRIDGE VALLEY) and SARAH MASCHKA (MANKATO. MN/ EAST) ranked 1-2-3 individually in walks per seven innings. The Gopher staff has continued that trend into 1992, yielding only 12 walks in the first 14 games. Maschka and Bixby have been the stingiest. with Maschka alloWing no walks in 37 2/3 innings and Bixby alloWing one walk in 27 2/3 innings.
WHAT'S NEXT-Minnesota Will play its first non-conference doubleheader of the season March 11 at Creighton beginning at 2 p.m. The Gophers and Lady Jays split a doubleheader in 1991 at Bierman. with Creighton's second-game Win snapping Minnesota's school-record 12-game winning streak. PREVIEW- Minnesota closes out the 1991-92 season with a home contest against league-leading and fifth-ranked Iowa on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Williams Arena. SCOUTING IOWA- The Hawkr?es post a 24-3 overall record and 15-2 mark in the Bi. Ten entering the final week of conference play. Iowa's ')Sses have been to fourth-ranked Vanderbilt and con1< .. rence foes Wiscon-sin and Purdue. The Hawkeys hosted Northwestern on Friday. handing the Wildcats a 73-65 setback while downing Wisconsin 63-36 on Sunday. Iowa is averag-ing 71.3 ppg while holdaverag-ing its opponents to just 58.3 ppg.
PLAYERS TO WATCH -The Hawkeyes are led in scoring by juniors Toni Foster with 15.8 ppg and Laurie Aaron with 11.3 ppg. Foster is also the team's leading rebounder with 8.4 rpg.
SERIES VS. IOWA- The Hawkeyes lead the series,
Al-11. and have won the last 16 matchups between the Warns. Minnesota's last victory over Iowa was in
January of 1984, a 57-55 win in Minneapolis.
LAST MEETING -The Gophers fell to Iowa 85-68 on Jan. 10 in the most recent meeting. Minnesota trailed
the Hawkeyes by just four points at halftime in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 38-34, and came within one point with
17:25 to play in the game before Iowa went on a 9-0 run. The Gophers were led in scoring by junior STACY CARVER (MONrROSE, MN/BUFFALO) with 21 points. Sophomore CAROL ANN SHUDLICK (APPLE VALLEY, MN/APPLE VALLEY) recorded 18 points in the contest. Minnesota shot 52 percent from the field but committed 26 turnovers.
IOWA COACH - C. Vivian Stringer (Sllppery Rock '70) owns a 460-106 record in her 20th year as a head coach. In her ninth season at Iowa, Stringer is 209-55 overall and 133-29 in the Big Ten. She led Iowa to four consecutive Big Ten championships from 1987-1990.
REVIEW-vs. Wisconsin - Robin Threatt made two free throws with 8 seconds remaining, lifting 23rd-ranked Wiscon-sin to an 83-82 victory over the Gophers on Friday night in Willlams Arena. Wisconsin led 50-36 at halftime but the Gophers pulled to an 80-78 lead on a Stacy Carver layup with 2:05 to play. Wisconsin's Michelle Kozelka converted a three-point play to give the Badgers an 81-80 lead, but Shudllck countered with a layup to put the Gophers ahead 82-81 with 15 seconds left. Threatt drove the lane, was fouled and converted the winning free throws. Minnesota was led in scoring by senior DANA JOUBERT (DE'm.OIT, MI/

SHUDLICK IN RECORDS - Shudlick has recorded 530 points to date in 1991-92, moVing her into third place on the Minnesota single-season scoring list. She is only the third Gopher to have scored 500 points or better in a single season. Laura Coenen holds the top two single-season spots with 708 points in 1984-85 and 581 points in 1982-83.
GYMNASTICS
KITN BROADCAST RATES HIGH- Saturday's tape-delay telecast of the Feb. 22 Minnesota-Penn State gymnastics meet at Williams Arena rated higher than several live sporting events aired over the weekend. The gymnastics telecast, announced by Dick Bremer and former Gopher gymnast Robin Huebner, earned a 3.0 rating with an audience share of 9. That Is more than Sunday's live telecasts of the Chicago Bulls -Philadel-phia 76ers professional basketball game and the Missour -Kansas and North Carolina-Duke college men's basketball games.
The gymnastics telecast ran head-to-head with the Northwestern -Ohio State men's basketball game (3.4 rating, 10 audience share) and Olympic Showcase (4.4 rating, 13 audience share).
GOPHERS TO CLOSE HOME SEASON AGAINST #13 MICHIGAN -Time is not on the Gophers' side as they prepare for their regular season home fmale-at 7 p.m. Friday against 13th-ranked Michigan at Williams Arena. With three meets remaining, Minnesota is in
1Oth place in the NCAA Central Region standings. The top seven teams in the region Will qualify for the NCAA Central Region championship, held April 11 at Mis-souri.
The Gophers have a 186.50 regional qualifying score, with Iowa in ninth place (186.68) and Iowa State in eighth place (187.14). Southeast Missouri (187.51) currently occupies the seventh and final spot.
For Minnesota to qualify for the regional, it Will likely have to raise its regional qualifying score to close to 188.00. To reach that mark, the Gophers will have to score better than 188 at least twice in their final three meets. After Friday, Minnesota Will compete at Arizona State on March 23 and In the Big Ten championships on March 27-28 in East Lansing, Mich.
WOLVERINE NOTES -Third-year coach Bev Fry has made dramatic Improvements in the Michigan gymnas-tics program. Her astute recruiting has brought the Wolverines from Big Ten also-ran status into the national spotlight. Last season the Wolverines finished the regular season ranked 29th nationally and lOth in the Central Region. This season Michigan Is ranked 13th nationally (189.07 region average), second in the region (3/4 rankings) and has clinched its first-ever

Michigan improved to third last year. Fry's team isexpected to contend for the conference title this season. WATCH FOR- The freshmen on Michigan's men's basketball team have gotten much national attention, but the best-kept secret in Ann Arbor would have to be the women's gymnastics team's freshman class. Beth Wymer is the top-ranked freshman all-arounder in the nation and is ranked sixth overall with a 38.99 regional qualifying average. She scored 38.65 to win the all-around in a Michigan win (189.75-181.70} over Western Michigan on Saturday. Other freshmen who have contributed are Debbie Berman and Li Li Letmg. Leung ruptured an achilles tendon on Saturday, however, and is out for the season. Redshirt freshman Kelly Carfora (37. 70 score Saturday) and junior Ali Winski (38.15 score Saturday) also compete all-around.
SERIES -The Gophers lead 16-3. Minnesota won 189.00-188.00 at last season's Big Ten championship. GOPHERS FINALLY STICK VAULTS, BUT SUFFER RARE SLIPS ON BEAM - Minnesota dominated the vaulting competition Sunday In Oklahoma's quadran-gular, scoring a season-high 47.85, enroute to a 187.10 team score and third-place finish in the meet. Okla-homa was first with a 191.90, Iowa was second with a
190.60 score and Ball State was fourth with a 185.25

score. The Gophers' vault mark was also the third-W
highest vault score In school history, and was .85ahead of the next-best team in the vault (Oklahoma-47.00) at Sunday's meet.
Going into the meet. the vault had been Minnesota's worst event, while tts best had been the balance beam. On Sunday, however, the balance beam was the Go-phers' worst, as Minnesota scored a season-low 45.55 on the apparatus.
CSISZTU HITS ANOTHER THIRD- Gophers sopho-more ZSUZSANNA CSISZTU (PILISBOROSJENO, HUNGARY /VOROSMARIY) scored 37.80 all-around despite falls In the bars and beam and finished third all-around on Sunday. It was her fifth third-place around finish In the six meets she has competed all-around this season. Csisztu scored a career-best 9. 75 in the vault, finishing in a four-way tie for first place in that event with Oklahoma's Tina Gamboa and Gophers DAWN KETCHER (BROOKLYN PARK. MN/PARK CENTER) and MONIKA JUHASZ-NAGY (BUDAPEST, HUNGART/VOROSMARIY). For Ketcher, the 9.75 vault score was also a career best. Juhaaz-Nagy has topped It just once before. that being at the 1990 Central Region meet. when she scored 9. 775.

.,JURY UPDATE- Sophomore LORI KINDLER (LAKE w-LMO, MN/HILL-MURRAY) had moved into the team's
bars, beam and floor lineups in the UCLA meet, but suffered a setback when she cut the middle finger on her right hand in a donn room accident on Wednesday. The cut, which damaged a sensory nexve, ts approxi-mately 1/4 inch long and required stitches, which will be removed on Friday. Kindler did not make the trip to Oklahoma but will Ukely be able to compete in the beam and floor exercise on Friday. She is doubtful for the uneven bars.
The most serious injury involving the women's gymnastics team happened Friday at practice, but it was not to a gymnast. Assistant coach Gabor Deli ruptured his right achilles tendon while demonstrating a skill in the floor exercise. He made the trip to Okla-homa but was unable to perform his normal spotting duties. Head coach Katalin Deli assisted with spotting in the meet, as did an Oklahoma assistant coach. It has not yet been determined whether or not Gabor will have surgery.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
AQUATIC CENTER SITE OF NCAA ZONE DIVING MEET - Approximately 60 divers, both men and aw_omen, will converge at the University Aquatic Center WVJ.arch 13 and 14 for the NCAA Zone 'C' DiVing Meet.
The competition is a qualifYing meet for the NCAA swimming and diving championship, with the women's championship being held at the University of Texas, March 19-21.
The winners in each event automatically advance to the NCAA championship, with the other qualifiers being decided by their combined 1- and 3-meter scores. The women will advance four divers by combined scores for a total of six divers, while the men count the six highest combined scores, sending eight to the national meet.
On Friday the 13th, the women compete in 1-meter diving at 10 a.m. and the men compete in 3-meter diving. starting at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the men com-pete on the low board at 10 a.m .. with the women's 3-meter diving starting at 2 p.m.
THREE GOPHERS TO COMPETE - Three Minnesota divers have qualified to compete in the zone meet this weekend. Sophomore LAURIE NELSON (ETOBICOKE, ONTARIO,CANADA/SILVERfHORN), junior JENNIFER YASIS (WHITE BEAR LAKE, MN/Sf. PAUL JOHNSON) and freshman KARA MARTIN (LINCOLN. NO/LINCOLN EAST) will compete on both boards. Nelson, the 1992 Big Ten Conference 1-meter diving champion, is an

CA/NORTHGATE) had victories in the 400-yard individual medley (4:31.65) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.83). Sophomore KRIS ZELLER/ FARIBAULT, MN) was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.58). TENNIS
GOPHERS ROUT GUSTIES -The women's tennis team closed its winter quarter season by shutting out Gustavus Adolphus 9-0 Friday at the 98th Street Racquet Club. Minnesota (6-2 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) is off to its best start since 1988-89, when it was also 6-2 after eight matches. That season the Gophers went on to post a 19-10 record.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS- Senior JENNIE MOE (EDINA, MN) was held out of the lineup Friday because of tendonitis in her right elbow. She is expected to return to action against Miami-Ohio. In singles, senior SOFIE OLSSON (ASMUND'f9RP. SWEDEN/GULLSTRANDSKOLAN) and freshman SUSAN CULIK (CHAPIN, SC) provided convincing wins. with Olsson defeating the Gusties' Molly McCormick 6-0,6-0 at No.1 and Cullk downing Dawn Parmley 6-1. 6-0 at No.2.
The Gophers enjoyed similar success at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, with sophomore JENNY MARQUES (lAGUNA HILLS, CA) and junior VICKY KOLARIC (WILLOUGHBY HILLS, OH/NOTRE DAME ACADEMY) combining for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Parmley and Unnea Carlson at No. 2 and Culik and freshman SHANNA JOHNSON
(BLOOMINGTON. MN/JEFFERSON) beating Tracy Erickson and Sheryl Russeth 6-1. 6-0 at No. 3. NOTES - Cullk and Johnson became the Gophers' second doubles team to reach doubles figures in wins this season, raising their record to 10-2. The Moe and Olsson doubles duo, which leads the team with a 15-6 doubles mark, was the only Minnesota doubles team to win 10 or matches last season, going 18-10.
Three more wins from the Marques/Kolarlc tandem (7-7) would give the Gophers three doubles teams with 10 or more wins for the first time since the 1989-90 season. Cullk's team-leading doubles winning percent-age (. 778/14-4 record) equals the highest Gopher single season doubles winning percentage in the last five years. Former Gopher Ubby Nelson posted a .778 figure (14-4 record) in 1989-90.

MINNESOTA PLAYS AT CREIGHTON WEDNESDAY-The 17th-ranked Minnesota softball team (13-9) will
play its first non-conference doubleheader of the season at Creighton (6-4) March 11 at 2 p.m. The Gophers have won 10 of their last 12 games and will look to continue that trend in Omaha. Minnesota went 7-1 and placed second in the 10-team Aggie InVitational I last weekend in College Station, Texas.
ABOUT THE LADY JAYS-Creighton is 6-4 after a 10-game road trip to Las Cruces, N.M. last weekend. The Lady Jays opened the season with a four-game winning streak against Western Michigan (2), New Mexico State and lOth-ranked Utah. Creighton lost four of its last six games on the trip, including losses to second-ranked Fresno State, third-second-ranked Arizona and 15th-ranked Central Michigan. Creighton scored four runs or more in three of their victories in New MeXico last weekend. The Lady Jays have now won 58 straight games when they score at least four runs, dating back to April 1989.
SERIES-Creighton leads ll-6. The Lady Jays and Gophers split a doubleheader last year in the Twin Cities. Minnesota won the first game 5-2 behind a 14-hit attack that matched the 1991 season high.
Creighton came back to win the nightcap l-0 and stop a 12-game Gopher winning streak.
FINAL AGGIE INVITE STANDINGS-Minnesota fin-ished in a three-way tie with South Carolina and Missouri at the top of the Aggie Invitational I last weekend. South Carolina was awarded the team championship by virtue of its victories against Minne-sota and Missouri. The Gophers claimed second because of their win against the Tigers.

BIXBY THROWS SECOND NO-HITTER-Senior pitcher Brenda Bb:by had not thrown a no-hitter 1n the first 97 starts of her Gopher career. Now, Bb:by owns two no-hitters In a four-start span. Last Saturday, Bb:by threw Minnesota's seventh no-hitter 1n the last 10 seasons with a 1-0 Victory over Northeast Louisiana.
