UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA BOARD OF VISITORS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY

BOARD MEETING: April 10, 2008

COMMITTEE: Educational Policy

AGENDA ITEM: I. Approval of a Degree and Program Name

Change in the Curry School of Education BACKGROUND: The Curry School proposes to change the name of its Health and Physical Education Program, as well as the degrees offered by the Program, to Kinesiology.

DISCUSSION: Kinesiology is defined as “the study of

movement,” and in this country today it is used to describe a field of study in which movement or physical activity is the intellectual focus. It is in common use in academic

departments where the causes and consequences of physical activity are examined from different perspectives. These specialized areas of study at the Curry School include

exercise and sport biomechanics, physiology, motor behavior, adapted physical education, physical fitness and sports

medicine.

Currently, the degrees offered are the B.S.Ed., the M.Ed. and the Ed.D. in Health and Physical Education; it is proposed that these be changed to B.S.Ed., M.Ed., and Ed.D. in

Kinesiology. The proposed change has been approved by the relevant faculty in the Curry School, and it is the common usage in effect in American schools which offer these

programs.

The change in name must be approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, once it has been approved by the Board of Visitors.

ACTION REQUIRED: Approval by the Educational Policy Committee and by the Board of Visitors
