Vince Lombardi said, “Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” I don’t think anyone in business would argue with this statement, and this is exactly what has helped to make NEMEON what it is today. In fact, this was the premise for our Board action regarding the new MINIMUM LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION for members.

We didn’t implement this policy without some serious discussions and much deliberation over what we expected to achieve, and the reaction we expected to get. Well, I can tell you it’s been a lively exchange of phone calls, emails, and letters from members, all of whom care very much about this organization. While most expressed support for our position, there were a few members that voiced varying levels of disapproval. This was not unexpected. However, we welcomed it as an opportunity to have some straight dialogue about the reasoning that went into our decision. After all, in order to insure the organization will continue to thrive, and survive, it requires the support and participation of everyone pulling together. I won’t say that all are pleased with our decision, but I can say that most understand the necessity of it. The Board has promised to work with those companies that are adversely affected by the decision in order to help them comply. I will keep you all posted on our progress.

As you all know by now, Earl Ward has resigned his position as CEO of NEMEON in order to take a position in the distribution side of our industry. We all appreciate Earl’s hard work and contributions on our behalf, and wish him well in his future endeavors. Having said that, I want to assure all members and vendors that NEMEON is an organization with a very strong Board of Directors, an excellent and willing leader in Dave O’Donnell (our newly appointed CEO), and a capable, passionate staff that is second to none. I will tell you that NEMEON will not “miss a beat” going forward. By the way, please take a moment to call and congratulate Dave on his new position! We plan on continued growth for the benefit of our members and preferred vendors, and expect that in the near future you’ll witness what I’m talking about. Today’s business climate is full of challenges, as is our industry, but rest assured that NEMEON’s goal is to do all we can to assist our members in achieving and maintaining both their individual success, as well as that of NEMEON’s.

As this Holiday season approaches, I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a prosperous 2014. It’s my hope that the new year brings more

cohesiveness to our industry, our government, and our world…that’s called wishful thinking.

Regards,

Chairman

Ross Riddle South Coast Shingle Co. Long Beach, CA

All the roads we have traveled in the past have led us to where we are

today. In 2013 NEMEON has seen some twists and turns in the road

which have steered us on the path to continued success as the largest

roofing and siding cooperative in the United States today. As the new

President and CEO at NEMEON I got to thinking about traveling new

roads and realized that we are all having the same thoughts. All of our

individual businesses are starting a new year with new goals and

challenges; accompanying that will be some of the usual uncertainties

of the market.

Which direction will that take us?

Will we achieve the goals that we strive for?

What new marketing and buying decisions will we make to further

grow our business?

All of these questions will, without a doubt, send us down different

roads as the year progresses. As members you have been asked to take

a look at how you can incorporate more preferred vendors and how

you can become more involved in making NEMEON successful in

2014 and beyond. We have also asked our preferred vendors to travel

on a few new roads this year. Some of the goals we have set for our

preferred vendors are to participate in the LionGUARD University,

attend the annual meeting, and meet minimum rebate requirements.

The entire NEMEON family is being asked to take an active role in

taking the right road that will enable our members and our preferred

vendors to achieve greatness in 2014 and beyond.

As I begin my journey as the NEMEON President and CEO I want to

challenge all members to keep the cooperatives goals in the front of

your minds when looking at how you will grow your business. With

all of the great preferred vendors and programs at your disposal there

will always be an option for you to support a NEMEON partner when

looking to reach your full growth potential.

Thank you for all of your support and confidence, if we all travel the

same road there is no doubt that we all will be successful in the

coming years.

Member Spotlight

A visit to L.A. Roofing Materials is always special. To say that L.A. Roofing Materials is located in maybe not the best part of town is a kind understatement. Founded in 1982 by Don and Jeanne Gardner, this is truly a family owned and operated business. Don’s father before him was a roofing salesman for US Gypsum (I did not know they sold shingles) and Don has been in the business all his life. Now, as Don puts it—the future is in the youngster’s hands as their son, Steve, has taken the lead and will continue the family business.

L.A. Roofing Materials has had its own share of ‘special moments over the years. One can only remember the Rodney King (or South Central Riots) of 1992. Imagine your business being right in the middle of the riots and what you would do? Don’s solution was to stay and protect his business. He decided to barricade the entry ways with pallets of shingles and he rented a water cannon, hooked it up and put it in the center of his yard. When the rioters

came and tried to climb over the fences to commence their looting, they got the full force of the cannon. Word soon spread that L.A. Roofing Materials was not the place to loot and they survived the riots unscathed. Then there was the armed robbery a few years back. Two men decided that Monday morning at 9am was a good time to rob the place. Problem was that at 9am on a

Monday, there is no money in the building yet! Steve tried to explain this to the gentlemen who were not buying it. While they were trying to convince these guys there was no money in the building an employee jumped one of the robbers—the other one fled. They were able to subdue the guy with the help of some customers who were wandering by. By the time the police arrived, all was in order. The police stayed outside and told the L.A. crew and customers—“just let us know when you are done with them”.

But with all the rich and dubious history, the area is coming back. Not far from the University of Southern California they are finding that there are a lot of teachers and students moving into the neighborhood. “The area is much calmer now with a good police presence and revitalization”. L.A. Roofing Materials has always enjoyed great walk-in business with their central location. Plus for deliveries, they are always going against the grain of traffic—leaving the city in the morning and returning in the evening. Recently the sales counter at L.A. Roofing Materials received a makeover. “We decided to turn all the desks to face our customers and give them easy access to the service people. We also added the NEMEON NETWORK which has been a great addition to the sales area” said Steve. Although small in size, the sales area works great and gives the customers a very down home feeling. In fact, down home feeling right in the middle of South Central Los Angeles—maybe one of the most hostile environments over the years to have a business. But with the persistence of great independent business like L.A. Roofing Materials and their commitment to take care of their community offering great products and services, South Central Los Angeles is the place to be!

LionGUARD University is a training initiative that we believe will be successful in help-ing NEMEON reach our primary objective of connecthelp-ing NEMEON Distributor Mem-bers with our Preferred Vendors.

NEMEON LionGUARD U was launched in February 2013 as a platform to bring cost effective Preferred Vendor Training to our Members. Historically, training has been done by suppliers in a “face to face” environment which means that Suppliers and Member Distributors have to travel to conduct or attend training. Distributor sales people travel to a Suppliers location for a 1 or 2 day training session, or Suppliers and sales reps or regional managers to the Distributors’ location to conduct hands on training. Although this training is effective, it is expensive and timing can be an issue with the continual introduction of new products/applications. Ultimately Suppliers need to get their customers trained and up to date on their offering without “waiting to train” due to busy calendars. LionGUARD U allows Suppliers to post training modules (new products, repair training, safety training) allowing Member Distributor Salesper-son training online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Each module includes a quiz to insure students understand and can apply the training on future sales call.

LionGUARD U has turned out to be a very cost effective training method, with the av-erage cost per student trained at under $10 per student! Typical hands on training runs $50 to $250 per student.

As of December 1st, LionGUARD University has almost 700 distributor member stu-dents taking courses and that number is consistently growing. There are more than ten courses available for students and many suppliers preparing to offer their first course to the member community.

Contact Andi Voelker or Dave O’Donnell at NEMEON to submit your employee list or to learn more about offering courses through

LionGUARD University!
