I. The satellite Telstar 1 was designed to relay television and telephone signals between the U.S. and Europe. The test signal was sent from the U.S. ground station in Andover, Maine of the American flag outside the station with the Star Spangled Banner music. The French ground station received and sent back the signal to prove the system worked. July 10, 1962 the date on the stamp refers to the historic transatlantic television broadcast which aired in Canada and 16 European countries and on all three major American networks.
