Ash Wednesday
February 17, 2021
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday by acknowledging our need for repentance and for
God's mercy. Marking our foreheads with dust, we acknowledge that we die and return
to the earth while at the same time tracing the life-giving cross indelibly marked on our
foreheads at baptism. Reconciled to God through Christ, we humbly pray for God to
make our hearts clean while rejoicing that "now is the day of salvation."
11am - Worship will be posted on all our digital channels to help you faithfully enter this holy
season. *please be invited to pick up ashes at church or:
Anytime between 12pm-1pm or 6pm-7pm - Join Pr Adam for a brief walk-up/drive-up imposition of

Come and See Jesus…
Through the Eyes of the One Healed
Gathering
Are you a better care giver or care receiver when it comes to dealing with illness? When are the times that you really need to be a good care receiver?
Opening Prayer: Everlasting God, you give strength to the weak and power to the faint. Make us agents of your healing and wholeness, that your good news may be made known to the ends of your creation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Discussion Questions: Come and See Jesus…Through the Eyes of the One Healed Mark 1:29-39
Share a story of an experience of healing. Share a story of being healed.
What is the difference between health and wholeness?
Read again Mark 1: 29- 31
What is it like to encounter Jesus through the eyes of Simon’s mother-in-law? What does it mean for us that God has the power to heal?
How has God equipped you to help heal others?
Respond to the baptismal image of being ‘raised up’ in Christ for a life of discipleship.
How is a life of service to your neighbor a grateful response to God’s healing and an important part of the life of discipleship?
Read again Mark 1: 32-39
Point out the other examples of healing. What does this proclaim or reveal to you?
What can we learn from Jesus’ model of stillness and prayer?
Read again Isaiah 40:21-31
Describe the power of God found here. What strikes you about this prophesy? Read again 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 What are the blessings of the gospels? How do we share in them with others?

Stewardship Theme: Love Your Neighbor
Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all
the law and the prophets.” –Matthew 22:37‐40
What a shame that February – the one month of the year with keen focus on love – is also the shortest. We sure could use a lot more love in our world, especially for our neighbor.
The last 12 months have been particularly hard, as race riots, a divisive election and civil unrest have all unfolded against the traumatic backdrop of the Covid‐19 pandemic. Currently in very short supply, more love for neighbor would go a long way in
helping us to solve our problems. Love for neighbor is integral to not only good discipleship, but also good stewardship. The greater the “love for neighbor” factor in our lives, the better stewards we will be of every blessing God provides –
creation, time, relationships, money, possessions, health, to name just a few. By cultivating love for neighbor we will also enjoy a happier life and promote a healthier and more civil society.
This year make February “Love Your Neighbor” month in your personal devotions and your congregational life. Give the concept breathing room in your life. Keep it in your thoughts, sow it in our heart, talk about it to your family and friends.
Pray for God to teach you what it means to love our neighbor. Pray for God to give you the strength and will to live it. And watch as love heals and invigorates your life … and our world.

“He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.” – Isaiah 40:29
Yes, loving one’s neighbors can be difficult, but it is not impossible. God is with us and gives the strength and power we need to love others, even our enemies. Stewardship of relationships matters!

CROSS OF HOPE SCHOOL MINISTRY
Cross of Hope School
is a welcoming Christ centered community providing high quality education
in a nurturing environment that respects each child’s development.
Staffing Update
It is a blessing to share with the community that Erika Miller
will transition into the role of School Ministry Support Specialist.
This exciting news comes after several months of discernment including the
retirement of Claudia Beck from her role as School Ministry Support Specialist,
several months of posting for her position while also continuing to reflect on the
needs of our School Ministry and how God is calling us to live out our mission.
In this administrative role, Erika will first be working to streamline the application and enrollment process for
our School Ministry (PreK-5th grade) to achieve our goal of having this process entirely online for the
2021-2022 academic year. She will also be focusing on the preschool state licensing requirements and
Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) accreditation so that we can build off the strengths of
our preschool in continuing the work necessary to achieve our schoolwide accreditation. She will continue
to support our Fundraising activities and will broaden our school marketing presence on Social Media and
other platforms as we continue to provide a welcoming Christ centered community providing high quality
education in a nurturing environment that respects each child's development.
Please welcome her in this new role!

Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-NM events occurring in February and March
Annual Legislative Issue Briefing and Bishop’s Luncheon
Due to the ongoing health emergency, we have had to alter plans for the annual Legislative Issue Briefing and
Bishop’s Luncheon that takes place during each regular session of the N.M. State Legislature. The Bishop’s Luncheon
will not be held this year. However, the Bishop will join us for the Issue Briefing that will now take place on Zoom. The briefing format will be like what it would be in-person and will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, on February 25. The event will include an advocacy themed bible study, guest speakers, time with the Bishop, and a legislative update on the LAM-NM Advocacy Agenda.
Email LAM-NM director, Kurt Rager at krager@rmselca.org to register and receive the Zoom link.
Advocacy Training Events:
In collaboration with the New Mexico Interfaith Hunger Coalition and Bread for the World - Southwestern Region, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry - New Mexico is planning three advocacy training events in February. The Zoom-based workshops will focus primarily on the Hunger portion of our Advocacy Agenda but will also include an overview of the session and how to advocate as an individual during this session. Additionally, the workshops will be tailored to each of New Mexico's three congressional districts and hosted by congregations in those areas. Each session will begin at 6:30 and last about an hour.
Interested participants can attend any of the three, but especially to attend on the date that corresponds with their district:
Congressional District One - February 3 Congressional District Two - February 10 Congressional District Three - February 24
To register and to receive the Zoom link, please email breadnm@gmail.com.
You are created in the image of God from the very beginning. This is the basis for God's justice: Since everyone is made in the image of God,
then we need to recognize, honor, and respect the image of God in everyone. No exceptions. - Fr. Richard Rohr

Fifth Sunday after Epiphany: In Isaiah the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars also strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus’ healing work we see the hand of the creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service (diakonia). Like Simon’s mother-in-law, we are lifted up and healed to serve. Following Jesus, we strengthen the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our own strength in quiet times of prayer.
