Isn’t it a great feeling to get more work done than you expected?! It was that kind of week!

First, I am very happy to announce that our Note-able Givers Campaign for the restoration of the choir rail was a great success! On Monday all 143 notes of the Salve Regina hymn were sponsored with $75.00 donations for each note! Second, coming into Saint Joseph’s House this weekend you can see that it has experienced some transformation and conversion of its own with the painting of the columns and capitals! If you have been following our Columns and Capitals Restoration Project you know that the painter had initially estimated that he would be able to complete at least two columns and capitals a week and that it would take about six weeks to complete the work. As you look around this weekend you can see that the painter finished a lot more than expected. Most probably with the help of our patron, Saint Joseph! The painting contractor, Jayson Bianchi, was able to round up some associate painters who came in all week, and got the paint brushes moving! With a lot of joy in my heart, our six week

Columns and Capitals Restoration project will be done in approximately six days. If only Lent and all projects could go by this quickly and smoothly!

For most painters, their work consists in painting walls and door and window frames. I must say, it was very interesting and satisfying to watch these painters put their energy and talent into this unique project. They expressed their joy and pride in being able to take part in a project like ours which is spiritual, historical, and transformative. The columns and capitals that they painted have most probably not been painted for over fifty years and will most likely not be painted again for fifty years.

A quick recap of the project: As we do this project we need to remember that we are continuing the work that was done in the sanctuary approximately seven years ago. The colors that were introduced into the Cathedral then are colors that we will continue to use in the ongoing restoration work. Here is a little insight into the color scheme that is being used to restore our columns and capitals: The white color for the columns is the base color taken from the front four “Evangelist Columns” which were painted to resemble marble because of their higher status which we see in their shape and by the fact that they are topped off with the ornate Corinthian capital. The twelve “Apostle Columns” are much simpler in shape, and are topped off with a much simpler capital. These twelve columns are painted top to bottom with “Lily White” paint in honor of Saint Joseph who is typically represented holding a lily. The lily is a symbol of purity, so Saint Joseph holds a lily to represent his holiness and the fact that he was chosen from among other men to be the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each of the columns has a square center post that was softened and enhanced with four round pillars. The corners of the square center posts were carved from top to bottom to give the column a little more character. These carved sections will be painted with the same light shade of gray which was taken from the marbleized columns.

Please call the rectory for the following: New Parishioners-Welcome and please register.

Seven Sundays to

Saint Joseph

When praying the Seven Sundays devotion, it is customary to pray for a specific intention, asking Saint Joseph’s powerful intercession for your needs.

O glorious Saint Joseph, you marveled to see the King of heaven obedient to your commands. Your

consolation in bringing Jesus out of the land of Egypt was troubled by your fear of Archelaus. Nevertheless, being assured by an angel, you lived in gladness at Nazareth with Jesus and Mary.

By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us that our hearts may be delivered from harmful fears, so that we may rejoice in peace of conscience and may live with Jesus and Mary, and, like you, may die in their company. Amen

The joys & sorrows to reflect on for week 6:

Sorrow

His sorrow when he was afraid to return to his homeland.

Joy

His joy on being told by the angel to go to Nazareth.

For Reflection:

Matthew 2: 19-23 and Luke 2:39-40

vine green. The twelve capitals on the “Apostle Columns”

resemble buds about to blossom in relation to the blossomed

capitals of the four “Evangelist Columns.”

The Choir Rail restoration is scheduled to begin at the end of this week. These two projects will hopefully whet our appetite to continue the ongoing restoration work. Thank

you to our Apostle Givers and Note-able Givers who

contributed to this part of the restoration of the Cathedral.

Donations to the Cathedral Restoration can be made through the parish office, in the offertory, or online on the parish website.
