TABLE OF CONTENTS
Rosalind Franklin University
Internal Medicine Residency
Residents are licensed physicians who graduated from medical school with the degree of Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO). Residents have met all the requirements to continue their graduate medical training in order to become board-certified physicians.
Same level of care
Residents work with an attending physician who will confirm your diagnosis and ensure the most appropriate course of treatment is recommended for you. The attending physician may ask you additional questions and give you more information. This means that if you are seen by a resident, you are actually being cared for by a team of physicians.
Facts about Rosalind Franklin University residents • They care for patients just like other physicians.
• They partner with Rosalind Franklin University Chicago Medical School faculty members who are fully licensed, board-certified physicians, often referred to as attending physicians.
• They are very open to answering your questions. If they are unable to answer a question, they will research it and consult with their partner physician to find the answer for you.

provide, please visit nm.org/primarycare.

Nails
Healthcare workers are trained to scrub their nailbeds and the rest of us should, too. One nailbed can harbor as much bacteria as your entire hand. Other materials like food and lotion can also build up under your nails.
Thumbs
We scrub our palms, fingers and the backs of our hands, but often miss our thumbs.
Wrists
You might have to roll up your sleeves, but don’t stop washing before your wrists. We often miss our wrists while washing. After you’ve scrubbed your entire hand, use your opposite hand to make a ring around your wrist with soap and water, and then rinse.
Sources:
Whether you’re washing for 20 seconds with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand gel or spray with 60% or more alcohol, don’t miss these extra-germy parts of your hands.

Supporting You and Your Organization During Times of Uncertainty
Researchers in the field of disaster mental health warn that the emotional and psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will have an enduring impact on humanity. Critical incident stress management (CISM) is a strategic approach to fostering resilience in people in times of crisis and disaster. The CISM continuum of care is the most commonly used strategic planning system for disaster mental health, with the goal of promoting wellness through planning and preparation, providing resilience-building interventions, and supporting access to treatment rehabilitation. Offered in collaboration with the McHenry County Mental Health Board, Northwestern Medicine, and other community partners, CISM interventions are designed to help your organization navigate this difficult time with early interventions to enhance individual and organizational resilience. Interventions may include education, one-on-one or family sessions, and pastoral care. Additional options include small group interventions such as crisis management briefings and critical incident stress debriefings.
Goals of these resilience-building interventions: • Lessen the psychological and
emotional impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic
• Identify normal stress reactions • Encourage a natural recovery process
and skill-building
• Support individuals and organizations in restoring adaptive functioning skills • Determine need for further support
To schedule a CISM intervention for your organization, contact Jenn Balleto at 815.206.3459.

SPRING 2021 PROGRAMS > CLASSES
Northwestern Medicine is now offering programs in the northwest suburbs
that teach students, from kindergarten through high school, how to prevent
injuries and that encourage youth to listen and respond. Thought-provoking,
upbeat programs are offered to schools and various community groups.
As a leader in injury prevention, Northwestern Medicine provides information
and guidance to help prevent childhood injuries and is home to a local chapter
of the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Program. ThinkFirst, an
award-winning, evidence-based program, educates youth about the importance of
making safe choices. Healthcare professionals and educators discuss how
students can protect their body by using their mind. The messages are simple,
engaging, clear and age-appropriate.
Programs are tailored to children by age group:
• ThinkFirst for Kids (kindergarten through 3rd grade) • ThinkFirst for Youth (4th through 8th grade) • ThinkFirst for Teens (9th through 12th grade)
