How to use this directory

1. The right hand column indicates the SESIAHS Network in which the service is located i.e. Central, Northern and Southern. Some services are located on the border or just outside the area health service but have been included if services have been used extensively by Aboriginal people in SESIH.

2. Within each of the Networks, categories of services are listed in alphabetical order. For example, Accommodation, Allied Health, Disability, Early Childhood Clinics, Early Intervention, Family Support, Parenting Program and Youth Services.

3. The Aboriginal flag represents an Aboriginal service that caters specifically for members of the Aboriginal community. Those without the flag have been included as they deliver generic services that maybe useful to Aboriginal people.

4. The guide contained overleaf may be helpful to those attempting to collate services for Aboriginal people in other area health services.

Developing a service directory… a guide to the process

Mapping services for Aboriginal children in South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service was a Greater Eastern & Southern Child Health Network (GESCHN) project.

The process of developing the service directory involved gathering relevant data and interviews with key informants. The key stakeholders and departments/agencies contacted for information are listed below as an aid to others seeking to find this information in their own areas.

1. DATA WAS GATHERED FROM THE FOLLOWING SOURCES:

Pre-existing service directories including early childhood services, adult services, and community services. Some of the services were Aboriginal specific and non-Aboriginal services that cater to Aboriginal families. Health Promotion – directory of children’s services (0-18 years) from the Northern Network.

Brochures & pamphlets sourced from centres & services relevant to either childhood, youth or Aboriginal people. Services were visited and brochures & pamphlets of interest collected.

Internet Searches – city councils/shire council websites in local government areas were searched for

community directories; some have Aboriginal directories. Families NSW, Dept of Education & Training (DET), Dept of Aging, Disability & Home Care (DADHC), Dept of Community Services (DoCS) websites were

searched; most services display relevant information, addresses and contact numbers.

2. KEY INFORMANT INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED AND INFORMATION SOUGHT FROM THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE/AGENCIES:

Networking conducted with a wide range of Aboriginal (including health workers) and non-Aboriginal people. Aboriginal Health, Area Manager – collection of directories from the Southern Network & Redfern area.

Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer, Social Work Dept, Prince of Wales Hospital.

Aboriginal Early Childhood Worker, Child & Family, Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH). Families NSW Northern & Southern Network.

Child & Family Interagency Facilitator - Central Network. Alleena Home Care Aboriginal (DADHC).

(5)

Dept of Aging, Disability & Home Care, Aboriginal Workers. National Disability Service (NDS).

3. DATA ENTRY

A Word document was created, electronic resources entered, then additional entries from manual directories entered. A table was created with the headings chosen that best describe services and would be meaningful and useful to clinicians working in the field. The six column headings chosen included: service, name, address, contact details, service description and network. This was an ongoing process as new services became known. The Northern Network was first compiled, then the Central Network, followed by the Southern Network. When data entry was completed, the table was sorted by network, then services and service description.

4. DATA CHECKING

Entries were checked for likely accuracy in terms of updated address, contact details, services offered and intake criteria. Wherever possible, services were contacted directly to ensure accuracy of this information.

5. CONSULTATION

Draft electronic resources were sent to various people working with Aboriginal people within the Area to check whether any key services had been overlooked. These included the Area Manager Aboriginal Health, Community paediatricians, Aboriginal health workers, Disability and Child Protection services, Social Work Departments and the SESIH Child and Adolescent Health Stream.

6. DISTRIBUTION

a) Hard copies of the service directory will be distributed to the Area Manager Aboriginal Health, Aboriginal health workers and organisations that provide services to Aboriginal children.

b) The service directory will be distributed electronically through the following channels: Aboriginal Health, Child and Adolescent Health Stream, Aboriginal Child Health Interest Group (SCH) and Social Work Departments.
