Heat Pump Systems that Save Energy and Provide Outstanding Heating and Cooling All Year
• All-season comfort in any climate • High energy savings capability
• Suitable for new construction or replacement
FEATURES/BENEFITS
System indoor and outdoor sections offer outstanding perfor-mance in either the Cooling or Heating mode.
HEAT PUMP SYSTEM ENERGY SAVINGS OPPORTU-NITY — Electrical energy consumption is always a prime concern when selecting an air-conditioning system for a com-mercial application. An easy, effective way to save energy is to install a heat pump. Should your building plans call for one, consider a matched Bryant 575B, 575C, 541A/524A-H heat pump system. These systems not only offer highly efficient cooling, they also provide a clean, safe, efficient source of heat. In fact, they are capable of delivering approximately 3 units of heat energy for each unit of electrical power consumed. HEAT PUMP UNIQUENESS — The outstanding performance of these heat pump systems is due to the heat pump’s ability to absorb and transfer heat — from outdoors to indoors for heat-ing, and from indoors to outdoors for cooling. System indoor and outdoor sections operate as evaporators or condensers, depending on whether heating or cooling is required. The heat-ing cycle always starts with the outdoor coil absorbheat-ing heat from
the surrounding air (even outside air at extremely cold tempera-tures), and ends with the indoor coil releasing or rejecting heat to the air around it.
575B, 575C AND 541A APPLICATION VERSATILITY — Whether for a new application or replacement, these Bryant split system heat pumps offer time-proven performance for year-round comfort in any climate.
RUGGED LONG LIFE COMPRESSOR
575B and 575C Units — The 575B and 575C outdoor units are equipped with a scroll compressor for superior efficiency and long life. A recycle delay device in the unit control box will dis-able the compressor if any operational or safety devices open and stop the compressor. The unit safety circuit may be reset manually at the thermostat.
541A Units — The 541A180 outdoor unit is equipped with an 06D semi-hermetic compressor, which is famous throughout the industry for reliability. This compressor has a vane-type oil pump for positive oil pressure, an oil pressure regulating valve, a low oil pressure switch, Class F stator windings, capacity reduction, oil level sight glass and service valves. The 541A180 with cylin-der unloading (one unloacylin-der is standard equipment) can reduce capacity during cooling operation to reduce energy usage and improve space temperature regulation. A Cycle-LOC™ device in the control box will disable the compressor if any operational or safety devices open and stop the compressor. The unit safety circuit may be reset manually at the thermostat.

CONTROLS FOR PERFORMANCE EFFICIENCY — These units offer the building owner operating controls and components designed for performance dependability. The highly efficient scroll or semi-hermetic compressors are engineered for long life and durability. The compressor includes overload protection and compressor vibration isolation for further enhancement of quiet operation. The high-pressure switch protects the entire refrigeration system from abnormally high operating pressures. A loss-of-charge switch is also provided to protect the system against low charge conditions.
The unit also includes anti-short-cycling protection which pro-tects the compressor from the damage that can be caused by rapid compressor cycling. The 24-v control circuit transformer permits quick, easy wiring of standard and programmable 24-v thermostats.
Latest safety standards are assured through UL (Underwriters’ Laboratories) and UL, Canada approval.
The 575B, 575C and 541A units utilize a state-of-the-art defrost board with field configurable timed defrost cycles. The defrost board may be easily configured for defrost cycles of 30 to 90 minutes, depending upon the application.
Motor failure due to electrical overload is prevented by tempera-ture and current sensors. Coil quality and performance are enhanced by copper tubes and aluminum fins, which provide maximum heat transfer. The coil is circuited for subcooling. A large heat transfer surface offers additional efficiency.
INNOVATIVE BRYANT 524A-H INDOOR UNITS ARE CUS-TOM MATCHED TO 575B, 575C AND 541A OUTDOOR UNITS FOR SUPERIOR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE — The 524A-H Series has excellent fan performance, efficient direct-expansion (DX) coils, easy installation, and a unique combination of indoor air quality features. Its versatility and state-of-the-art features help to ensure that your heat pump system provides economical performance now and in the future.
Easy Installation and Service — The 524A-H multiposition design and component layout helps to get the unit installed and running quickly. The direct-expansion (DX) coils have factory-installed thermostatic expansion valves (TXVs) with matching distributor nozzles. All 524A-H units also include factory-installed check valves and piping for heat pump duty with matching 575B, 575C or 541A units.
The 524A-H units can be converted from horizontal to vertical operation by simply repositioning the unit. Drain pan connec-tions are duplicated on both sides of the unit. Fan motors and contactors are prewired. For easier service, the filters, motor, drive, TXVs, check valves, and coil connections are accessible by removing a single side panel.
Indoor-Air Quality (IAQ) Features — The unique combination of IAQ features in the 524A-H Series indoor units helps to make sure that only clean, fresh, conditioned air is delivered to the occupied space.
In the Cooling mode, direct-expansion (DX) cooling coils pre-vent the build-up of humidity in the room, even during part-load conditions. Unit sizes of 10 tons and above feature dual-circuit coils.
Standard 2-in. disposable filters remove dust and airborne parti-cles from the occupied space.
Thermal insulation contains an immobilized anti-microbial agent to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. The anti-microbial agent is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The pitched corrosion-free drain pan can be adjusted for a right-or left-hand connection to provide positive drainage and to pre-vent standing condensate.
The 524A-H accessory economizer can provide ventilation air to improve indoor air quality.
Economy — The 524A-H Series air handlers have low initial costs, and they continue to save money by providing reduced installation expense and energy-efficient performance.
Quick installation reduces installation costs, and TXVs, check valves, and heat pump piping are factory-installed.
High-efficiency, precision-balanced fans minimize air turbu-lence, surging, and unbalanced operation, cutting operating expenses.
The economizer accessory precisely controls the blend of out-door air and room air to achieve comfort levels.
When the outside air enthalpy is suitable, outside air dampers can fully open to provide “free” cooling.
Rugged Dependability — The 524A-H units are made to last. The die-formed galvanized steel panels ensure structural integ-rity under all operating conditions. Galvanized steel fan hous-ings are securely mounted to a die-formed galvanized steel deck. Coil housings are galvanized steel, and coils have alumi-num fins mechanically bonded to copper tubes. The conden-sate drain pans provide corrosion-free performance.

OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES (cont) INDOOR UNITS
*Factory-installed option. †Field-installed accessory.
Alternate Fan Motors and Drives are available to provide the widest possible range of performance.
Prepainted Steel Units are available from the factory for appli-cations that require painted units. Units are painted with Ameri-can Sterling Gray color.
Two-Row Hot Water Coils have copper tubes mechanically bonded to aluminum plate fins and non-ferrous headers. One-Row Steam Coil has copper tubes and aluminum fins. The Inner Distributing Tube (IDT) design provides uniform tem-peratures across the coil face. The steam coil has a broad oper-ating pressure range; up to 20 psig (138 kPag) at 260 F (127 C). The IDT steam coils are especially suited to applica-tions where sub-freezing air enters the unit.
Electric Resistance Heat Coils have an open-wire design and are mounted in a rigid frame. Safety cutouts for high tempera-ture conditions are standard. Terminal block for single-point power connection is included.
Economizer (Enthalpy Controlled) provides ventilation air and “free” cooling if outside ambient temperature and humidity are suitable. Can also be used with CO2sensors to help meet
indoor air quality requirements.
Discharge Plenum directs the air discharge directly into the occupied space; integral horizontal and vertical louvers enable redirection of airflow. Accessory is available unpainted or painted. Field assembly required.
Return-Air Grille provides a protective barrier over the return-air opening and gives a finished appearance to units installed in the occupied space. Accessory is available unpainted or painted.
Subbase provides a stable, raised platform and room for con-densate drain trap connection for vertical floor-mounted units. Accessory is available unpainted or painted.
Overhead Suspension Package includes necessary brackets to support units in horizontal ceiling installations.
CO2Sensors can be used in conjunction with the economizer accessory to help meet indoor air quality requirements. The sensor signals the economizer to open when the CO2level in
the space exceeds the set point.
Condensate Drain Trap includes an overflow shutoff switch that can be wired to turn off the unit if the trap becomes plugged. Kit also includes a wire harness that can be connected to an alarm if desired. The transparent trap is designed for easy service and maintenance.
UV-C Germicidal Lamps kill mold and fungus, which may grow on evaporator coil and condensate pan surfaces. The use of UV-C germicidal lamps eliminates the foul odors that result from this growth of mold and fungus. It also provides a self-cleaning function for the evaporator coil and drain pan.

SELECTION PROCEDURE (With Example)
I DETERMINE COOLING AND HEATING LOAD
REQUIREMENTS. Given:
Total Cooling Load (TC) . . . 88,000 Btuh Sensible Heat Capacity (SHC). . . 62,000 Btuh Temperature Air Entering
Outdoor Unit (Edb) . . . 95 F Temperature Air-Entering Indoor
Unit . . . 80 F edb/67 F ewb Indoor-Air Quantity. . . 3,000 cfm External Static Pressure . . . 0.80 in. wg Heating Load at Winter Design . . . 90,000 Btuh Temperature Air Entering Indoor Unit,
Heating . . . 70 F Winter Design, Outdoor . . . 0° F Power Supply (V-Ph-Hz) . . . 230-3-60
II SELECT SYSTEM THAT SATISFIES LOAD
REQUIREMENTS.
Select heat pump systems to satisfy cooling design load requirements. Enter the Combination Ratings, Gross Capacities — Cooling tables, page 20. At outdoor unit air entering temperature of 95 F, indoor unit air entering at 3,000 cfm, and 80 edb/67 ewb, find that a 575C090 out-door unit matched with a 524A-H090 inout-door unit delivers a TC of 90,300 Btuh and SHC of 68,400 Btuh at design con-ditions. These values satisfy the cooling requirements of the examples shown.
III DETERMINE THE HEATING CAPACITY OF SELECTED SYSTEM.
Enter the Combination Ratings Net Capacities — Heating tables on page 22 for units 575C090 and 524A-H090. Under the 0° F column, read down to the 70 F indoor-air section at 3,000 cfm and find an integrated heating capacity of 47,900 Btuh. The heating requirement is 90,000 Btuh, and the unit capacity is 47,900; therefore, 42,100 Btuh of supplemental electric heat is needed.
Select an electric heater that satisfies the voltage designa-tion and the supplemental heat requirement. Refer to the Electric Heater Data — Indoor Units table, page 34. The supplemental heating load required is 42,100 Btuh. To convert Btuh to kW:
= 12.3 kW of supplemental heat required.
For the 524A-H090, the heater part no.
CAELHEAT007A00 is rated 15 kW at 240 volts. To calcu-late kW at 230 volt, use the voltage multiplier found on page 32.
15 kW x 0.918 (230 volt multiplier) = 13.8 kW at 230 volts. 15 kW x 0.918 x 3413 Btuh/kW = 46,997 Btuh at 230 volts. The output of the CAELHEAT007A00 heater de-rated for 230 volt is 46,977 Btuh which satisfies the supplemental heat requirement for this example.
IV DETERMINE FAN RPM AND BHP (BRAKE
HORSEPOWER).
At the Indoor Unit Fan Performance Data table, page 27, enter the 524A-H090 section at 3,000 cfm and move to External Static Pressure (ESP) 0.80 column. Note that the conditions require 800 rpm and 1.24 bhp.
V DETERMINE MOTOR AND DRIVE.
For the 524A-H090 unit, find the type of drive that satisfies the 800 rpm requirement in the Drive Data tables on page 42. The Medium-Static Drive table shows an rpm range of 733 to 949 which satisfies this rpm requirement for the example described.
Next, enter the Fan Motor Data tables on page 41, and find that a 208/230-3-60 standard motor has a motor hp of 2.4 which satisfies the bhp requirement for the example described. Select the standard motor and medium-static drive (option code HC or FD).
42,100 Btuh 3413 Btuh/kW
