Mobility Systems + Services:
the reliable technology solution
provider for
Mobility car sharing Switzerland
Mobility car sharing is the most successful car sharing operator in Europe and the only one in the world to be continuously profitable over many years. One of the ingredients of the Swiss success formula is the consistent integration into available public transport (trains, buses and trams). The backbone of the success of Mobility car sharing is the software MobiSys 2.0. This case study tell you more about how Mobility car sharing built up a successful car sharing business with MobiSys. Customer profile The Mobility cooperative was established in 1997 by some of the pioneers of commercial car sharing. The first “fleet” consisted of seven cars. In 2015, Mobility has about 2’700 vehicles driving through Switzerland, from the Smart and the Mini Cooper to the electric Renault Zoe and removal vans.
Mobility car sharing customers have access to any of those vehicles at any time, wherever they are without having to worry about parking, maintenance or administrative matters such as insurance, official checks and road tax.
365 days a year and throughout Switzerland, Mobility is able to deliver their services. Via the Mobility website, with the Mobility smartphone app or by phone, the customer reserve the vehicle needed. They go to one of Mobility's centrally located 1,400 parking stations, unlock the car with a customer card, get in and drive away. When they return the car they simply lock it again using the card. An on board unit logs the distance travelled and the time for which the car was used. The system couldn't be simpler or more reliable. And that is exactly what the steadily growing number of Mobility customers has come to appreciate. More than 120,000 customers have access to around 2,700 reliable cars in all regions of Switzerland. The vehicles are conveniently located at railway stations or near central tram and bus stops, enabling customers to combine different modes of transport. Mobility's customers include a growing number of SMEs and major companies. The service allows them to dispense with their own fleet of company cars, transport and delivery vehicles, saving the high fixed costs of a fleet, fuel, insurance and parking and resulting in a long-term optimisation of their cost structures.
The challenge: Constant service availability About 2.2 million reservations a year being processed automatically demands flawless logistics and coordination. It would be an impossible task without an intelligent, efficient and extremely reliable software solution. From car sharing to solution sharing
The founding of Mobility Systems + Services, the IT subsidiary of the Mobility cooperative, was a logical next step: from the year 2000 the number of Mobility customers grew so
"MobiSys helps us manage our core processes on a day-to-day basis. When you're operating close to 2,700 vehicles, a reliable system is absolutely essential. Above all you also need rapid expert support, which is provided in full by Mobility Systems + Services."
Viktor Wyler, Head of Fleet Management at Mobility car sharing.
dramatically, that Mobility car sharing needed a powerful and expandable IT solution to keep pace with its own success. At that time, Mobility International AG and its product “MobiSoft” came into being. Later the brand Mobility Systems + Services was added and the continuous development of the software resulted in today’s ultra-modern car sharing tool “MobiSys 2.0”. Nowadays, the software comprises all the functionalities essential to an efficient, successful car sharing company. The development of MobiSys 2.0 is based on the many years' experience of the Mobility cooperative as the parent company.
As a mature software solution with an excellent performance record, MobiSys in the
second generation is also distributed to other car sharing operators abroad.
The advanced cloud solution: MobiSys 2.0 As a cloud solution, MobiSys 2.0 uses the most advanced model for the provision of business software processes over the Internet. These processes encompass customer management, geo-regions, vehicle fleets, contracts, flexible price models and payment systems.
To implement the Mobility business model, the software offers a flexible contract and subscription structure, which permits a wide range of tailored, scalable packages for private and business customers. Based on time and distance, the subscription structure may vary with different customer categories.
This allows Mobility car sharing to offer flexible contract structures for different user groups and automate the handling of as many reservations as necessary.
"MobiSys supports our day-to-day activities with the highest possible level of automation. It enables us to process daily new customer registrations very quickly and provide new customers with access to our fleet within the hour. With MobiSys we can also give our staff all the information they need about the customer, so they can respond quickly and effectively to customer enquiries. Our employees can find all the information they need about the customer in MobiSys – from e-mail correspondence to vehicle reservations and the damage file.

Comprehensive functionalities – individually adaptable for all business areas
MobiSys 2.0 integrates and manages all customer information such as multiple addresses, languages and credit card details. Correspondence is triggered through the system and send out to customers by e-mail, SMS or post. Thanks to MobiSys 2.0, nearly all
processes are fully automatic. When a new customer registers online, it is immediately recorded in MobiSys 2.0. The system sends a welcome letter to every new customer and releases an order to produce a new Mobility Card (the combined customer card and electronic car key). MobiSys 2.0 also interfaces with external applications such as third-party accounting software and output management software.
Mobility's field service team uses a separate application within MobiSys 2.0 and can enter information about a damaged vehicle using a tablet computer. The damage is then
visualised in the system, helping the fleet management team to make rapid decisions. MobiSys 2.0 can be used online with the appropriate licence without the software having to be locally installed. Consequently, customers can focus 100% of their energies on their core business. MobiSys 2.0 harnesses the latest technology: Google Web Toolkit, Eclipse Rich Client in Java and SQL Server. MobiSys 2.0 Java-based rich client features various roles in the car sharing business:: call centre staff, operations managers, accounting or marketing.

Web Portal
On the web portal they can make reservations and also view and update their customer details. The system is multilingual, which is particularly important in a country like Switzerland. It can even be linked in to additional services such as CO2 offsetting. Public Website The map on the public website
of Mobility car sharing shows all stations and cars. Mobility customers can even make their reservation directly from there.
Mobile App
For mobile use there are smartphone apps that can be branded for any provider using its own logo. The app has an integrated shake function which immediately shows the nearest station to your own location.
Three questions for
Adamo Bonorva, Head of Mobility car sharing Switzerland
Is an investment in MobiSys 2.0 a long-term investment?
Adamo Bonorva: The solution is continuously optimised and adapted to our needs as a car sharing operator. We believe that the upfront investment and continuous improvement of our main supporting tool results in a very secure and important long-term competitive edge for Mobility car sharing Switzerland. Why is MobiSys 2.0 more than just software? Adamo Bonorva: MobiSys maps all business processes of a car sharing operator and also makes it possible to interface with external applications. We use MobiSys as our main ERP system and combine it with various other tools to cover specific needs like those of for instance an accounting team. MobiSys as a complete service package including licence, hosting, support and maintenance delivers everything out of one hand. It makes it easy for us as users to rely on the highest and most efficient level of support.
Does MobiSys 2.0 serve as a management and control system?
Adamo Bonorva: On the one hand, our customers have access to their invoicing data,
usage history as well as their profile via the customer portal. That way, they can manage and ensure their data is up-to-date data. On the other hand, Mobility car sharing needs to make sure that the usage of the entire fleet is consistent and balanced. MobiSys interfaces with the right reporting tools to supply the data needed. That way, we are able to maximize the capacity per parking station based on detailed data reports and we can analyse which type of vehicle contributes most to the turnover. We know that if necessary, MobiSys 2.0 delivers the right control mechanism to keep our business beneficial for both our customers as well as our cooperative members.
Three questions for
Marcel Amstutz, CEO, Mobility Systems + Services How different is MobiSys 2.0 from other IT systems? Marcel Amstutz: MobiSys as a solution and Mobility International as a provider are non-manufacturer-dependent, so our customers benefit from the fact that we can link in to a wide range of systems, telemetry / OBU technologies and interfaces. This means that multi-vendor strategies can be used in different areas. Another difference is the fact that the system was developed with a focus on actual needs: the range of functionalities offered by MobiSys was primarily based on the needs of car sharing and fleet users in their day-to-day processes. By continually developing the product using an agile approach, we ensure that changing structures, processes and requirements are quickly reflected in the system's features. Can I integrate my corporate design in MobiSys 2.0?Marcel Amstutz: The MobiSys front ends – apps, portals and the rich client – can be adapted to the requirements of a company's own corporate design. We aim for a compromise by making user interfaces as standardised as possible to facilitate training and support while allowing sufficient flexibility for individual customer branding.
What add-ons are available? And is it possible to create special links (e.g. to a company's
SAP system for internal cost accounting and financial accounting)?
Marcel Amstutz: A service bus is part of the MobiSys architecture. It contains the technical foundation for setting up interfaces to a wide range of systems. We use standard
components and an interface structure that is as simple as possible. In almost all projects we integrate the solution into financial systems and on-board units. Some system
components, such as output management, document archiving and the reporting system, are third-party products but can be linked in using the same interface architecture and used 'out of the box' by the customer.
