combination of an established program in a great city with faculty and residents who are fun to be around.

Hobbies and interests: Triathlons, Cycling, Running, anything outdoors.

Matthew Dean, MD

Medical School: University of Central Florida

Academic interests: Ultrasound, system improvement.

What brought you here to Orlando Health? I feel in love with the

program and Emergency Medicine when I rotated here. Our department has an amazing group of intelligent and personable attendings and residents. It’s an amazing environment for learning and personal and professional growth.

Hometown: Orlando, FL

Hobbies and interests: Staying active with outdoor sports, exploring new

restaurants, Florida Gator football.

What brought you to Orlando Health? I came to Orlando because I love

the people and the warm weather.

Ashley Ferrara, MD

Academic interests: Medical education – Goals of being the next “Sal Silvestri”.

What brought you here to Orlando Health? The wonderful people and diverse patient population. Outside of the theme parks, Orlando is actually quite the hidden gem as far as cool cities go.

Hometown: From NY, moved to Boca Raton, FL.

Hobbies and interests: Movies, exploring the local food scene, theatre,

drawing, photography, traveling, museums, anything outside.

Philip Lin, MD

Medical School: Florida State University

Academic interests: EMS, Critical Care Medicine, Missions

What brought you here to Orlando Health? There is no other residency program like Orlando Health. It provides great teaching in a large

community-type setting while engaging in multiple research projects as an academic institution. A well-established program, the teaching here is one of the best that I have ever experienced and there is an even balance of autonomy and supervision.

Hometown: Miami, FL

Hobbies and interests: Concert violinist, likes to coach and play

basketball. Has gone on international missions to Belize.

Zoe McGowan, MB, BCh, BAO

Medical School: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Academic interests: Medical decision making, Palliative Care,

Pediatric EM – really a little bit of everything and anything.

What brought you to Orlando Health? The people, just got a really

good vibe from everyone during my interview. Great bunch of people to work with, with a variety of focuses from ultrasound, to pediatrics, to EMS. Plus after living in Ireland my Vitamin D levels were

dangerously low – so I figured it was time for a bit of sunshine.

Hometown: Vancouver, Canada

Hobbies and interests: Soccer, cooking, eating Amanda’s baking,

pro-napping and all things Canadian – hiking, skiing, etc.

Kyle Norman, MD

Medical School: University of Hawaii

Academic interests: possibly an EMS fellowship. I would also like to try

and start an EM program in Hawaii.

What brought you to Orlando Health? Warm weather and nice people. Hometown: Kailua-Kona, HI

Hobbies and interests: Enjoys hiking, diving, and basketball.

Christopher Ponder, MD

Medical School: University of Texas at San Antonio Academic interests: Pre-hospital Medicine, Ultrasound

What brought you here to Orlando Health? The people that I met here at

the program during my interview, and the city of Orlando.

Hometown: Spring, TX

Hobbies and interests: Enjoys golf, bird & large game hunting, tennis,

music, board & card games.

Nathan O’Brien, MD

Medical School: Vanderbilt University

Academic interests: Ultrasound, wilderness medicine, international

medicine

What brought you to Orlando Health? The Orlando Health program offers

an ideal mix of community, county, and academic emergency medicine. The residents and attendings here have fun at work, and the program feels like a family. Orlando is my home, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be training here.

What brought you here to Orlando Health? A very strong

academic/clinical experience but more importantly the people. Incredible faculty/staff and a very welcoming and tight group of residents.

Hobbies and interests: Enjoys running, snorkeling, baseball, playing with

his dog Rocco, and spending time with his new wife and their families.

Amanda Stone, MD

What brought you to Orlando Health? The people. Hometown: Daytona Beach, FL

Hobbies and interests: Enjoys Bikram yoga, literature, music, film,

crocheting.

Thomas Smith, MD

Medical School: Jefferson Medical College

Academic interests: EM administration, ultrasound. What brought you to Orlando Health? I just really loved the

program! I knew this was the place after getting to meet everyone and seeing how happy they were and how the program was set up. Of course, I also wanted to escape the cold of the Northeast.

Hobbies and interests: Board games, comic books, golfing, anything

outdoors, training my dogs, and most importantly going out with the other residents!

Amanda Tarkowski, MD

Academic interests: Critical Care and global health

What brought you here to Orlando Health? A top program in my

hometown, where you get to start seeing really sick patients right away and everyone is really happy: there was really no question as to my first choice!

Hometown: Orlando, FL

Hobbies and interests: I enjoy cooking, baking, and home brewing;

biking/hiking/kayaking/generally just being outdoors; and traveling, reading, and expanding my repertoire of things I can fix around the house.

Tory Weatherford, MD

What brought you to Orlando Health? When I came to interview, I really

enjoyed the residents and staff that I had the opportunity to meet. I realized that the program would offer great training, and a great environment to call home for three years.
