The University of Ljubljana was established in 1919 on the foundations of a long-established pedagogical tradition that could already be seen in the 16th centu-ry, when Jesuits established a solid education system. With its 60,000 students participating in over 496 study programmes on all three Bologna levels, it is ranked among the largest universities in the world, and is the central and largest educational institution in Slovenia.
It has a total of 23 faculties, 3 art academies and em-ploys approximately 4000 university teaching staff, who are assisted by nearly 2000 technical and admin-istrative staff. With 64 per cent of the whole university student population in Slovenia, the University of Lju-bljana is also the largest in the area of study.
The University takes a central pedagogical position by performing public services in the areas of special importance which ensure the preservation of national identity. The University has close ties with Slovenian companies and foreign enterprises. Partners include multinational corporations and the most successful Slovenian companies. Nearly one-tenth of Ljubljana’s inhabitants are students, which gives the city a young and lively character.
The University of Ljubljana
The University of Ljubljana has a rich tradition and is listed among the top 500 universities in the world according to the ARWU Shanghai, Times THES-QS and WEBOMETRICS rankings.

According to the stated directive, a residential permit is granted for the period of one’s studies or at the most for one year and can be extended in the event that the studies last more than a year.
A student from a non-EU member country must submit an application for their First Residence Permit at the nearest diplomatic or consular representative mission (DCRM) of the Republic of Slovenia.
Upon receiving notification that you may collect your per-mit, you will have to come in person with your passport to the DCRM at which you submitted your application. The permit is issued in the form of a card which contains a contactless chip, which stores a digital copy of the holder’s photograph and fingerprint.
In the event your application is denied, you have the right to appeal, which should be submitted within the prescribed time limit to the DCRM.
Within three days of your arrival in the Republic of Slove-nia, you are required to report the place of your temporary residence to the Administration Unit, Department for Inter-nal Affairs (Tobačna ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana, tel. Others renting a private room or an apartment must do this by themselves at the above-mentioned administration office. The student should bring their valid passport, residence permit and the rental agreement or, if staying with a friend, a written statement from the owner of the apartment stating that they allow the student to stay at that address for the duration of their study period (residence permit).

Health Insurance
Foreign students coming from EU member states and coun-tries of the European economic region should have an E128 form, E 111 form or E-card. The document type depends on the authorised insurance agency of the country of their origin. Namely, students should contact the authorised in-surance agency with which they have taken out inin-surance and ask for one of the above-mentioned forms.
If you have no health insurance in your home country, you can contact an insurance company that will cover your in-surance in the Republic of Slovenia (ASSISTENCE CORIS, Ul. Bratov Babnik 10, 1000 Ljubljana).
Accommodation
There are two main accommodation possibilities - to rent a private room or apartment – check the local newspapers and real-estate agencies; or to rent a room managed by the student halls of residence.
The International Office of the University of Ljubljana can help you by providing rooms in student halls of residence. All rooms in the students’ residence halls are double rooms. They are furnished and have a shared kitchen and bathroom ([email protected]).
Cost of Living
You will need approximately EUR 500 a month to cover all your basic living costs. Exactly how much you spend will depend on your lifestyle, but this figure takes into account all costs including accommodation, food, public transport and books.

Ljubljana – a beautiful place to live and study Ljubljana lies in a basin between the Karst and the Alps, some 298m above sea level. With its 280,000 inhabit-ants, it is one of the smaller European capitals yet it is big enough to encompass everything expected of a capital city while being small enough to allow people to retain their individuality.
The city’s increasingly vibrant commercial and trading life and rapid growth of foreign diplomatic representatives give it an ever greater cosmopolitan touch. Ljubljana of-fers a wide variety of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants. Relief from the hustle and bustle of life in the capital can be found in the many parks and woodland areas, which in some places extend almost right into the city centre.
In Ljubljana you will feel a mixture of Slavic charm and sincerity, as well as Mediterranean temperament and a touch of Nordic reserve. You will also be able to enjoy the city’s architecture, museums, archaeological sites, monu-ments, many theatres and one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world.
Slovenia
Slovenia is a small and picturesque country and lies in the heart of Europe, where the Alps and the Pannonian plains meet the Mediterranean and the Karst. When in Slovenia, all of its many attractions are in the palm of your hand. It is just 210 km to the Slovenian border from Vienna, 230 km from Budapest, 430 km from Milan and 190 km from Venice.
