9. The Ant and the Grasshopper
One hot, summer’s day, Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing loudly. Ant walked by, grunting as he carried a plump, heavy kernel of corn. “Where are you off to with that heavy thing?” asked Grasshopper. Without stopping his hard work, Ant replied, “To our ant hill. This is the third kernel I've delivered today, and there are plenty more I need to fetch before the end of the day.” “Why don’t you come and sing and play with me," said the Grasshopper, “instead of working so
hard? It’s a lot more fun to play than it is to work.” “I am helping my family to store food for the Winter,” said the Ant, “and I think you should do the same thing. Winter is going to be long and cold this year.” “Why should we worry about Winter?” said the Grasshopper. “We have plenty of food right now. Look at all the food lying around in the field.” But Ant went on his way and carried on with his work. After a few weeks, the weather started to get colder. All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick, white blanket of snow that even the grasshopper could not dig through. Grasshopper was getting hungrier and hungrier, and soon he was dying of hunger. He staggered to the ant hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the Summer. Then the Grasshopper knew that it was better to work hard than to play.
