Hogwarts Open House Project

Name: Group:

For this project, your group will create a poster based on a school subject

offered at Hogwarts, for students and families to see during the Open House. We want your subject to be appealing, and convince them to attend Hogwarts rather than the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic or the Durmstrand Institute. Your poster will include four (five) sections:

1) The name of the class and its description ! Write a brief paragraph describing what you will study, and why students should take this class.

2) Necessary school supplies ! Textbooks and other supplies, prices, and where to find them (which store in Diagon Alley).

3) An activity ! Instructions for a 5-10min activity that you would teach in class. 4) Test ! Write a test (with an answer key if applicable) that the students in that

class would have to take, explaining what is being evaluated. If you have a fifth student in your group:

5) Extracurricular ! Describe the extracurricular activity you would be involved in (e.g. Frog Choir, Wizard Chess, Quidditch, Owls Care, Ball, Field Trip Committee to Hogsmeade, Ghoul Studies, SPEW).

Each person will be responsible for one section of the poster. Your group will then display their poster for everyone to see.

Make a list of the three subjects you would like the most. Students will be picked at random to decide which group goes first.

- Transfiguration - Care of Magical Creatures

- Potions - Defence Against the Dark Arts

- Divination - Charms

- Flying lessons - Herbology

You will be evaluated on interactions in English, reading/listening to resources, researching your topic, as well as writing and producing texts.

In-class Instructions

Class #1 • Make a team and meet with them. Decide which subject you want to research and make a list of your top 3. Group numbers will be picked out of a hat to see who decides first. • Assign each group member a section of the poster and start brainstorming as a team using the K-W-L chart (see appendix). Class #2 • Using the computers or the library, find information on your own section of the poster. Take notes in your copybook (we will not come back). Some good resources (I have the books): The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J. K. Rowling (book) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander (J. K. Rowling, book) Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp (J. K. Rowling, book) An Interview with J. K. Rowling by Lindsey Fraser (book) The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the World of Harry Potter by Tere Stouffer (book) https://www.pottermore.com http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page • After 25 minutes, meet with your team and discuss what you found. Do you want to mention this aspect of the HSS? What qualities are you looking for in your students? • Homework: Finish research. Class #3 • Write your rough draft. Summarizing is NOT plagiarizing! Use your own words. • Meet with your peers who are in charge of the same section as you (e.g. list of school supplies). Discuss what you have found and proofread each other’s drafts. Do your texts look similar? Are you on the same track? What grade would you give each other? (Use evaluation grid). What could the other do better? Class #4 • In your team, discuss your poster layout. What does a poster look like? Whose part should go first/last for the Open House? What information needs to be most visible? Etc. • Write final version of your text. • Homework: Finish the final copy and meet with your team to assemble the poster. The presentation will be in a week. Class #5 • Assemble poster with your team • Review your part and proofread one more time. Presentation will be next class.

(6)

Class #6 • Display your poster around the room. • Using the feedback form, give your opinion on each poster presentation. Back up your opinion with a reason (e.g. I liked this poster because it had lots of pictures). • At the end of the fair, write a short reflection (5-8 sentences) on what it was like to do team work. What did you like? What did you dislike? What could you improve next time? Do you think this project is good for teamwork? For next time, what can the teacher do to make teamwork easier?

• Give each of your teammate a grade out of 5, explaining why. (e.g. I think Timmy deserves a 4 because he did his work well but didn’t talk during discussions).
