...From the Exalted Ruler

December 2020 By now, you have probably eaten the last of the turkey and stuffing and the only thing left over from Thanksgiving dinner are the memories of spending time with family and friends. Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to look back at the year in a spirit of reflection, thankfulness, and giving.

As ER for the last 3 months, I have had opportunity to reflect and be thankful for many things. First, for our members and the fact that we are still growing despite the current times. Second, for the dedicated officers and trustees of our lodge who work hard to see that we continue to prosper during the ever-changing times. For John and Karen who are on the front lines every day and to all the other lodge employees who sustain us. Third for the Building Association and their willingness to be flexible with us during the COVID situation. Lastly, a special thank you to Mike Patterson, Hal Laney and Nuel Henderson for your constant support and willingness to educate, support and guide me through this ER journey.

I am happy to share that the craft fair brought in $3350.00! After expenses we were just shy of $3000 in profit. I had 2 more scheduled in December but with the current shut down they both had to be cancelled.

As you know, it is a struggle for our lodge financially due to COVID and we need to have more fundraisers, but we need your help. There are many things we can do but we need volunteers. Our current fundraiser is holiday pies. You will find the order form in the newsletter that you can use to take orders from family, friends, coworkers, neighbors. Your support in helping sell these pies is greatly appreciated.

Now that December is here, so is the season of giving. As Elks members, you already know that giving is a year-round affair and it does not always involve gifts.

When we initiate new members, the lodge Officers talk to our new members about the Elks virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. Below is an excerpt from the Leading Knight’s piece about Charity.

“The daily gifts we bestow increase our own riches. The help we extend to those in need is added to our own strength. The witchery of wealth is not in having, but in sharing. The real benefactors of mankind count their store in what is given, not in what is saved.”

“But as Elks, we teach not alone the charity of aims, but the higher and nobler charity of thought, word, and deed. Our whole influence in life is determined by the good deeds we do rather than by the emotions we feel. “The kindliest feeling may vanish, the best resolve may be forgotten; but the influence of a good deed, honestly and properly performed, will continue forever.”

To all my fellow Elks, I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

Fraternally Yours, Sharon Shaw-Flores Exalted Ruler
