GOSPELTHINK

Continuing the expanded version of Gospelthink for the feast of Christ the King. Try to find ten to fifteen minutes and consider the following in prayer.

MATTHEW 25:31-46

Judgment Day

Prayerthoughts

a. Is the end of the world something that I fear? Why or why not?

b. Truthfully with no thought of feeling pride in what I may or may not have done, what is the principal reason that I should be placed with the sheep?

c. Take time to go through each of Jesus’ situations asking what I am doing in the areas mentioned and what I can do better.

d. Jesus words: whatever I did to the least of the people, you did to me. Without judging anyone, who do I consider the least in my life right now? Do I look at them as if they were the Lord?

e. As Jesus goes through the list again (the opposite of those who are righteous), what should I be most concerned about as I live right now?

f. I definitely should pray for those who do not have the ne-cessities of life, but further, should I give a little more to food kitchens or charity establishments?

g. My prayerthoughts…

Today, I will give some money or time to

someone in need.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Titles and privileges, palaces and guards, banquets and bene-fits, servants and fine living, are all things earthly folks associ-ate with kings and royalty. These have no place in Christ. To understand the kingdom of Christ and what it means to have Christ as our king, one must be willing and able to under-stand transformation, engagement and empowerment. To live in the kingship of Christ, we have to live deeply and con-templatively; allowing God to change not only how we act, but how we feel, think, and see. It is not an easy journey or one that is always welcomed. Sometimes, it is easier and saf-er to live as if Christ wsaf-ere our earthly king. It’s a more black and white world. But the kingdom of Christ exists in a world of gray where the hungry, thirsty, those who are strangers, naked, ill, and imprisoned find a welcome home. It is a king-dom that doesn’t always make sense, where the last are first and the weakest are most strong. World economics and sec-ular philosophy doesn’t like this kind of king. Maybe that is why they crucified him the first time and continue to. What-ever we do to the least of God’s children, we do to God. Do you really want to inherit the kingdom?

The virus has caused us to eliminate some enhancements to our liturgy, but one aspect Holy Family wants to encourage is participation in our mass prayer responses. Father Mike ap-proved the purchase of tri-fold mass response cards de-signed to fit in pockets and purses. Bring this prayer aid with you to mass. No longer will we stumble through the Gloria or Creed. Let’s show our appreciation to Father Mike by our strong responses as we follow along using our new mass prayer and response card.

Our Buildings and Grounds Team finished their work on the lower parking lot. Cracks have been filled with tar to main-tain the lot which allows Holy Family to defer the expense of resurfacing at this time. Thank you to these volunteers for their gift of time and labor.

If you know of someone who has a need, deserves recogni-tion, or if you are called to one of our ministries at Holy Fami-ly Parish, please contact Jill Connell, Volunteer Coordinator at 913-706-9037 or connellgal@gmail.com.

The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is a vibrant Catholic family made up of people ac-tively living and sharing their faith. As part of this family, we strive to meet the challenges of our culture, as a parish and as an Archdiocese… as disciples of Christ. As disciples, we make a prayerful commitment to learn and grow in His love. Seek-ing to make disciples for Jesus, we are invited to offer a sacri-ficial pledge of generosity and service.

The One Faith, One Family, One Future in Christ campaign is an opportunity to impact the lives of people throughout northeast Kansas – in moments of rejoicing and during times of struggle – people young and old, diverse yet unified in faith. The campaign is about people, those we meet in our parishes and schools, people in our neighborhoods and workplaces. We seek to joyfully share our Catholic faith eve-rywhere, every day.

We here at Holy Family have raised over $50,000 for the One Faith, One Family, One Future in Christ campaign. We know that all of us are experiencing change right now, but our par-ish has still been blessed with a spirit of generosity.

The campaign is asking Catholics to prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift to address the pressing needs of our Church in Northeast Kansas. Please review the campaign materials or go to the website for more information https:// faithfamilyfuture.archkck.org/

All registered parishioners should have received personalized information through the mail from the Archdiocese. Please complete your pledge card and return. Remember that pledges can be paid over a 3-5-year period.

If you need a new letter and pledge card, please let us know. Or visit the online portal to make your pledge http:// faithfamilyfuture.archkck.org/pledge/

During the month of November we once again have the Book of Remembrance in the sanctuary. Feel free to add loved ones to the book so that we may remember them at every Mass in November.

Please be generous in this week’s special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in six people live in poverty. With this collection, you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those struggling across the country. In addition, 25% of the funds we collect will re-main in our diocese to fund local antipoverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collec-tion and work on the margins. More informacollec-tion about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

Background of the Gospel

Matthew 25:31-46

This is the last of Matthew’s parables and is unique to

this Gospel. The time of judgment has arrived as the

Human One comes in his glory (v. 31). This scene is

inti-mately linked with 28:16-20, where Jesus instructs his

followers to make disciples of all nations (panta ta

eth-nē, 28:19), a command that this parable presumes has

been fulfilled. All the nations (v. 32) are now assembled

to render account. The reason why the sheep are

sepa-rated from the goats is not clear. Both were very

valua-ble. Nor is there any evidence that after pasturing them

together during the daytime, a shepherd would

sepa-rate the two at night. (See 3:12; 13:24-30, 47-50;

24:40-41; 25:1-13 for other images of end-time separation.)

Since most people were right-handed and developed

greater strength and skill with this hand, the right side

came to symbolize favor, blessing, and honor.

The image of Jesus shifts from shepherd to king (v. 34;

see 2:2; 21:5). And, like Moses, who laid out before the

Israelites the choice of blessing or curse (Deut 11:26),

Jesus separates those “blessed by my Father” (v. 34)

from those “accursed” (v. 41). This is not predestined;

rather, God’s invitation goes out to all (5:45; 13:3-9),

and the choice to accept or reject it rests with each. For

those who accept the invitation, which is visible in their

deeds, blessing and inheritance in God’s realm await.

In light of the saying at 24:14, it is likely that Matthew

envisions the completion of the great commission

(28:16-20); all people, including Israel, Gentiles, and

Christians, have heard the Gospel and are now judged

according to their deeds. The “least brothers” (v. 40)

and “least ones” (v. 45) most likely refer to other

Chris-tians rather than to just any person in need. See 11:11;

18:6, 14, where “little ones” and “least” refer to

vulner-able members of the Christian community, and

10:41-42, where Jesus promises the reward of a righteous

person for those who receive the needy ones sent out

on mission. The basis of judgment, then, is how one

re-ceives Jesus through his followers who proclaim the

Gospel (see 10:40).

GOSPELTHINK

What is the Lord saying to me today? Monday, November 23 –LUKE 21:1-4

Giving of yourself for a serious reason means giving of every-thing you have. When I give to others, am I truly giving of

myself?

Tuesday, November 24 – LUKE 21:5-11

There will come a time when the world will end. If that

end-ing were soon, am I prepared enough?

Wednesday, November 25 – LUKE 21:12-19 The end of the world will be difficult, but stay with me and

persevere. Do I become too despondent at times? Thursday, November 26 –LUKE 21:20-28

When the end of the world comes and I come in glory, I hope you look forward to it. I can look forward to it if I am

pre-pared for my death whenever it comes.

Friday, November 27 – LUKE 21:29-33

Know for certain that these things will come to pass, and my words will last forever. Do I listen to the Lord in the

Scrip-tures as much as I should?

Saturday, November 28 – LUKE 21: 34-36

Always conduct your life as I have told you. Am I vigilant for

the Lord in my actions?

Sunday, November 29 – MARK 13:33-37

I am speaking about the end of the world or the end of your life and I tell you to be watchful. Am I prepared for my death

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacra-mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself

wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Holy Family is joining other parishes of the Archdiocese along with Catholics around the country for #iGiveCatholic. As the first-ever online giving day created to celebrate our Catholic faith, the #iGiveCatholic Giving Day inspires faithful stewards to "Give Catholic" on #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving. As we reflect with grateful hearts on how blessed we are, we are inspired to give back to God from our deep sense of gratitude, sharing what we have to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give shelter to the homeless, and preserve our Catholic heritage for future generations.

Giving Tuesday is December 1. Advanced giving runs from November 16 through December 1, 2020. Donations we receive will go toward Phase 2 of the Fr. Pat Riley Education Center. To donate please visit our website at Holy Family Eudora or go to iGiveCatholic.org.

The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas has removed De-cember 8th, the feast of the Immaculate Conception from being a holy day of obligation. We will have one mass at 9:30 am on December the 8th if you would like to attend. Following our 9:30 am Mass this

week-end, Deacon Bill will lead us through a short "teaching on Adoration". The feast

of Christ the King marks the end of our liturgical year and is an excellent time for reflection. Please plan to stay following Mass for this special event.
