CONFLICT
This document is supplementary to the mandatory requirement of Saudi Aramco engineering standards, materials systems specification and standard drawings.
If any conflict occurs between this document and the Saudi Aramco Standards, Specification and Standard drawings then the Saudi Aramco standards, specifications and standard drawings shall govern.
5 DESIGN
5.1 Codes and Standards
Engineering requirements for design of the piping system are in accordance with ASME B31.3, ASME B31.8 (as applicable) and the applicable SAES-L Specifications.
5.2 Material
Piping materials and limitations (pressure, temperature, diameter) are shown in attached piping classes.
All 316 stainless steel pipe, fittings and flanges shall be supplied dual grade 316/316L with chemical compositions of 316L grade materials but with the mechanical properties of 316 stainless steel.
Charpy impact testing shall be carried out on all carbon steel pipe and wrought piping components, irrespective of material grade, with wall thickness greater than 25mm. Testing shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3 with impact values being 34J min average and 27J min individual for a standard 10mm x 10mm specimen. Impact testing shall be carried out on base material, weld deposit and HAZ.

For carbon steel piping, the following services require PWHT after piping fabrication: a) All Caustic Soda solutions at all temperatures.
b) All Diglycolamine (DGA) solutions above 270 °F design temperature.
5.3 Piping
Components
5.3.1 Pipe
The minimum wall thickness/schedule shall be that shown on each piping class. Calculated thickness shall not be less than D/135
Nominal pipe sizes NPS ¼, 1¼, 2½, 3½, 5 and 22 shall not be used, except as required to mate with equipment connections. Where necessary to match a manufacturer’s equipment connection a reducer must be employed immediately to increase to the next available acceptable pipe size.

For nominal pipe sizes greater than NPS 24 pipe sizes shall, wherever possible, increase in increments of 6 inches up to and included NPS 48. Above NPS 48 nominal pipe sizes shall increase in increments of 4 inches.
Pipe sizes not included in ASME B36.10 / B36.19 shall not be used.
Carbon steel pipe NPS 6 and larger specified to API 5L shall be purchased in accordance with Saudi Aramco Material System Specification 01-SAMSS-035.
Carbon steel and low temperature carbon steel pipe shall be seamless up to and included NPS 24 and SAW/EFW larger than NPS 24.
API 5L pipe shall have a joint factor of 0.95. All other welded carbon steel pipe shall be 100% radiographed and have a joint factor of 1.0.
Stainless steel pipes shall be seamless up to NPS 12 and EFW for NPS 14 and larger, with 100% radiography and have a joint factor of 1.0.
All welded carbon steel pipe specified as NACE shall comply with the requirements of Saudi Aramco Material System Specification 01-SAMSS-016, Qualification of Pipeline, In- Plant Piping and Pressure Vessel Steel for Resistance to HIC.
All carbon steel, low temperature carbon steel and stainless steel pipes specified to NACE shall be supplied in accordance to NACE MR01-75 and Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards SAES-A-301, Material Resistant to Sulfide Stress Corrosion. All buried steel pipe shall be externally protected against corrosion per Saudi Aramco Specification SAES-H-002.
Reinforced Thermosetting Resin (RTR) pipe used above ground, if any, shall have external ultraviolet protection.
Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (cPVC) piping material used above ground shall have external ultraviolet protection.
Galvanized pipe and couplings shall be supplied galvanized in accordance with ASTM A53, with threads free of galvanizing.
5.3.2 Flanges
Flat face flanges shall only be used to match cast iron valves or non-metallic flanges or to match flat face flanges on equipment. Flat face finish shall be in accordance with MSS-SP-6
Flange face finish of raised face flanges shall be as specified in ASME B16.5 and supplied in accordance with ASME B46.1.
All flanges Class 900 and above shall be supplied with Ring Type Joint.
Flange joints between spacers or blinds shall be fitted with jackscrews in accordance with Saudi Aramco standard drawing AC-036630
Orifice flanges shall be supplied complete with jackscrews and threaded tap plugs installed in accordance with Saudi Aramco Standard Drawing AC-036413.

Flanges NPS 24 and smaller shall be supplied in accordance with ASME B16.5 and for sizes larger than NPS 24 in accordance with ASME B16.47 Series A.
Galvanized flanges shall be supplied galvanized in accordance with ASTM A53, with threads and gasket contact area free of galvanizing.
5.3.3 Fittings
In Sour service socket weld or threaded fittings shall not be used. Butt weld fittings shall be used for all sizes.
For non sour services socket weld fitting shall normally be used for NPS 1½ and smaller and butt weld fittings for NPS 2 and larger.
Butt weld elbows shall be long radius.
Carbon steel and low temperature carbon steel butt weld fittings up to and including NPS 24 shall be seamless. Fittings greater than NPS 24 shall be EFW with 100% radiography of weld seam and have a joint factor of 1.0.
Stainless steel butt weld fittings up to and including NPS 12 shall be seamless. Fittings greater than NPS 12 shall be EFW with 100% radiography of weld seam and have a joint factor of 1.0.
Galvanized fittings shall be supplied galvanized in accordance with ASTM A53, with threads free of galvanizing.

Full couplings, where allowed, shall be used for connections of NPS 1½ and smaller pipes in straight runs. Quantities and supply shall be within Construction Contractor’s scope.
Unless otherwise stated, the wall thickness of butt welded fitting shall be equal to the thickness of connected pipe.
In general, all nipples of sizes NPS 1̕½ and smaller shall be seamless and cut from pipe and have a minimum wall thickness of schedule 80.

5.3.4 Valves
Valves shall comply with the requirements of the following SAMSS 04-SAMSS-001 Gate Valves

04-SAMSS-035 General Requirements for Valves

All valves shall conform to 04-SAMSS-035 and inspection and testing shall comply with the requirements of 04-SAMSS-048.
All valves for use in low temperature applications shall comply to the requirements of 04-SAMSS-003 Additional Requirements for Low Temperature Valves.
Types of valves and valve trim shall be in accordance with the individual Piping Classes, based on service conditions.
All SW globe and check valves shall conform to API 602 as applicable except when full bore is required.
All ball valves shall be full bore.
Unless otherwise noted, face to face/end to end dimensions shall be in accordance with ASME B16.10 or API 6D whichever is applicable.
In steam service, Saudi Aramco specification shall be applied with added appendices as follows:

Stainless steel valves shall be supplied dual grade 316/316L for socket weld and butt weld valves and dual grade or standard grade for flanged valves. L grade valves are not acceptable alternatives.
Valves specified to NACE shall conform to the requirements of NACE MR0175-2002 and SAES-A-301.
Ball, butterfly and plug valves shall be fire-safe design, except where used on water/utility services. Welded bodies shall not be used.

All butterfly valves in hydrocarbon service shall be flanged, API 609 Series B design. Soft seated ball and butterfly valves, and tight shut-off Gate and Globe valves with PTFE seat inserts shall be limited to a maximum design temperature of 250°F.

5.3.5 Branch Connections
Branch connections for metallic classes shall be in accordance with SAES-L-110 unless shown otherwise in the pipe classes. Welded branch connections shall be verified in accordance with ASME B31.3 para 304.3.
5.3.6 Threads
Threads for threaded pipes, fittings, flanges and valves shall be in accordance with ASME B1.20.1 taper threads.
PTFE (Teflon) tape shall not be used.
Seal welding of threaded joints shall be in accordance with SAES-L-110. 5.3.7 Gaskets
Asbestos in any form shall not be used in the manufacture and construction of gaskets.

Spiral wound and ring joint type gaskets shall be in accordance with ASME B16.20 5.3.8 Bolts
Bolts, cap screws and nuts shall be threaded in accordance with ASME B1.1.
Where flange insulation assembly is required, bolt lengths shall be calculated to suit the application in accordance with Saudi Aramco Standard Drawing AA-036865. Bolts used in underground piping shall be ceramic fluoropolymer coated as per 09-SAMSS-107.
All stud bolts shall be threaded full length and supplied with two heavy series hexagon nuts.
All jack screws and hexagon headed bolts shall have threads extended to the underside of the head.
5.4 Piping

5.4.1 The piping class coding system consists of four alpha-numeric fields containing one or two characters each. Each field describes various features of the piping class. 5.4.1.1 First Field
The first field defines the pressure rating and consists of one or two numeric characters. Refer to paragraph 5.4.2.1
5.4.1.2 Second Field
The second field defines the pipe material and consists of two alpha characters. Refer to paragraph 5.4.2 2
5.4.1.3 Third Field
The third field defines the corrosion or erosion allowance and consists of one numeric character. Refer to paragraph 5.4.2.3
5.4.1.4 Fourth Field
The fourth field defines the service and consists of one alpha character. Refer to paragraph 5.4.2.4. The alpha character is also suffixed by numeric characters, which differentiate specific pipe class requirements based on service fluid.
An example of a complete piping line designator is “1CA2P03”. This designator specifies an ASME pressure class 150, impact tested carbon steel piping system with 3.2mm corrosion allowance, designed for general process service, with specific requirement for pipe class service fluids.
