Adelaide, the capital of South Australia and the fifth largest city in the country is home to a culturally diverse population of 1.2 million people, including 230,000 students.

OVERVIEW

The Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (MSPPM) program provides a unique educational and life experience for students as the program is taught across Carnegie Mellon’s Adelaide and Pittsburgh campuses.

The MSPPM Global is a program that gives you an international perspective by learning in the United States and Australia with a strong focus on the Asia Pacific region. You will spend your 1st and 2nd study period in Adelaide, a 3rd study period undertaking a 12 week internship in either Australia or internationally and your 4th and 5th study period in Pittsburgh.

The MSPPM Global program is tailored for students seeking to progress their career in any policy field and to assume positions in policy development, implementation and evaluation, and to manage these functions in government, non-profit organisations, international organisations and the private sector.

Customised for experienced professionals, the MSPPM Global program combines a comprehensive public policy and management curriculum with an industry based System Synthesis Project, these real-world components of the program provide you with work-experience and industry knowledge to advance your career and to further differentiate you in the competitive global market.

Schooled in the interdisciplinary Carnegie Mellon University tradition and trained as an analytical problem solver, you will understand how to produce and analyse data after sound policy advice, and make effective management decisions. You will look beyond traditional paradigms looking to innovative solutions to problems.

The Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (MSPPM) program is designed to educate innovative, ethical leaders who create and implement policy, manage organizations effectively, transform organizations, and develop new solutions to important social issues.

You will gain strong problem solving skills–both quantitative and qualitative–that will allow you to develop effective policies and you'll have opportunities to gain experience in leadership and real-world applications of your public affairs management coursework.

At completion of the MSPPM Global program, you will be able to competently:

INTERNSHIPS

Students of the MSPPM Global program are provided the opportunity to undertake a 12 week internship in the 3rd study period with public and private companies or government agencies to gain invaluable real world work experience. You may choose to take your internship in Australia or international but not in the United States. Internships provide you with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the practical challenges facing today’s organisations, adding greater depth of knowledge and experience to your already robust degree. SYSTEMS SYNTHESIS PROJECT

The System Synthesis Project takes students beyond theory into the practical application of skills through the opportunity to work with public and private companies, government agencies on real-world projects. The goal of these projects is to provide MSPPM Global students with the skills necessary for structuring, managing, and carrying out projects within an organisation.

This project provides the opportunity to consolidate and apply the skills and knowledge developed in previous coursework in a team-based approach to a real problem. A team of students works with a real-world client on a real-world problem of value to the client. Most important, this is an opportunity to apply the team's

advanced engineering and management skills, including the specialized knowledge and skills needed to solve a real problem. In particular, team members must learn to work effectively with clients, quickly understand their problem, negotiate deliverables and then select, adapt and apply just the right amount of process and

documentation to meet clients' needs and effectively manage the project. Previous projects and project partners include:

CURRICULUM

Our MSPPM Global program features a unique interdisciplinary curriculum of analytical and quantitative studies. Students are empowered to customise their degree by selecting from a variety of course electives carried out via coursework and independent study. The MSPPM Global curriculum is a unique blend of interdisciplinary analytical and quantitative studies. We are widely recognised for our unique interdisciplinary environment, encouraging work across departmental lines. As a result, our MSPPM graduates enter the world with the ability to solve complex problems.

The MSPPM Global program requires you to study 192 units in total comprising of 132 units worth of core courses and 60 units of elective courses. This combination of courses allows you to tailor the program to your career and interest needs by selecting relevant elective course whilst studying core courses, which provide a core foundation of skills and knowledge.

Full-time students complete the program over five study periods. Students may commence in the August intakes. Each study period is the equivalent to 12-13 weeks of study and usually comprises of 48 units worth of courses. Each course is awarded either 6 or 12 unit weighting Therefore you can study a combination of 6 and 12 unit courses to meet your program requirements.

For successful completion of the MSPPM Global program, students must complete 192 units total: • complete 132 units of core requirements

• complete 60 units of electives • complete a 12 week internship • complete a Systems Synthesis Project

• achieve a cumulative quality point average (QPA) of at least 3.0

The electives below represent only a selection of electives available. Elective courses will be offered in a variety of areas related to the technology and business of information and communication technology. These courses will be offered by resident faculty as well as by faculty from other CMU campuses through short-term visits and distance learning.

A full list of electives is available for you to customise your degree to suit your individual requirements.

Course Exemption

If you have a strong background in any of the core courses, you can receive an exemption either by passing an exemption exam administered during your orientation program or through successful completion of

comparable coursework during your undergraduate studies. Exempting a course doesn't reduce the required number of courses you must complete but instead allow you to choose additional elective courses to expand your knowledge base and further tailor your program.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All applicants applying for a program at Carnegie Mellon University Australia are required to satisfy the entry requirements for admission. Applications for MISM are assessed by Carnegie Mellon University, Heinz College Pittsburgh.

1. WORK EXPERIENCE

Applicants are required to have 3 or more years of professional work experience. This information can be provided in the form of a resume or CV.

2. ACADEMIC COURSE PREREQUISITE

Applicants are required to have programming experience in data structures and an object-oriented

programming language such as C, C++ or Java. This information can be provided in the form a transcript from your home institution.

3. ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree from a recognised higher education institution before commencing studies at Carnegie Mellon University Australia.

4. GRADUATE ENTRY EXAMINATIONS

Applicants must provide a valid score for one of the tests below.

5. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit official score results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Entry to Carnegie Mellon University Australia programs require either IELTS or TOEFL

Test scores are valid for two (2) years and must be submitted directly by IELTS to the Carnegie Mellon University Australia Admissions Office or uploaded with your application.

English Language Test Exemption

Applicants whose native language is not English but have completed studies for the duration of at least three years at a higher education institution in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America or South Africa are exempt.

6. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Applicants are required to submit an essay (1,000 words) describing your academic and professional background, your career goals, and how the program will help you achieve your goals.

7. CV/RESUME

Applicants are required to submit a resume. Please submit a one or two page summary of your education skills, accomplishments, employment experience and volunteer experience. The resume must be current and include all part time and full time work experience, the dates of when the employment began and ended and a brief description of your responsibilities under the title of the position.

8. RECOMMENDATIONS

Applicants are required to have three recommendations submitted on their behalf. Recommendation forms must be completed by three people who can provide academic or professional references.

Please note recommendations from friends, family members or acquaintances, and other sources not able to evaluate applicants on an academic or professional basis, will not be accepted.

Recommendations are submitted electronically through the online application system by your recommenders. We do not accept recommendations submitted on paper.

The applicant must input the names and contact information for each recommendation provider into the application system. Prior to requesting that your recommendation providers complete the recommendation online, be sure to check with them to ensure that you register them with the correct email address

After you apply and accepting your offer

Acknowledgement

The Admissions Office will send an acknowledgement email to you once you have submitted your application. If your application is complete and we do not require any further information your application will be assessed by the Admissions Selection Committee. This takes approximately one - two weeks.

Offer process

If your application is successful, your letter of admission will be emailed directly to you (and if applying with an authorised education agent, copied to your nominated representative). If the offer is conditional you need to meet the conditions of your offer before accepting. If you have been sent an unconditional offer (no

conditions), you can choose to accept it immediately.

If you choose not to accept the offer right away, you can also:

After you accept your offer

Acceptance form and deposit

You will need to return the acceptance form to the Admissions Office. You will be required to pay a deposit to secure your place in the program.

Overseas Student Health Care (OSHC) (Applicable to International Students only)

All international students are required to have overseas student health cover for the duration of their studies in Australia. This can be arranged by the Admissions Office on your behalf with our preferred provider. You can nominate the type of cover you require in your acceptance form.

Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) (Applicable to International Students only)

Once your deposit has been received and overseas student health cover arranged, the Admissions Office will issue you with confirmation of enrolment. This document will need to be attached to your visa application.

Once you have accepted your offer to study at Carnegie Mellon University Australia, you will want to start planning your Carnegie Mellon experience, if you have not already started doing so. The purpose of the background check is to protect all stakeholders of our programs (students, faculty, staff and alumni) from those who would falsify their backgrounds to gain an unfair advantage in the admissions process. The application assessment process for admission into Carnegie Mellon University assesses both the applicant's strength for entrance into the program, while simultaneously assessing merit for a scholarship or award.

Successful awardees accept an ambassadorial role representing Carnegie Mellon. Their role provides a unique responsibility and leadership development opportunities, including representing the university at networking events, alumni functions, industry gatherings and community engagement activities.
