Dear parishioners:

The modern “hospice movement” was

finding its roots in our country in the

1970’s. It has been a great gift for

those facing terminal illness and their

loved ones. Many of our parishioners and members

of our families have experienced the grace that

hos-pice care can be. Here are two quotes from different

sources that seem complimentary in commenting on

the hospice movement.

“Hospice care is a type of care and philosophy of

care that focuses on the palliation of a chronically ill,

terminally ill or seriously ill patient’s pain and

symp-toms, and attending to their emotional and spiritual

needs. In Western society, the concept of hospice has

been evolving in Europe since the 11

th

century. Then,

and for centuries thereafter in Roman Catholic

tradi-tion, hospices were places of hospitality for the sick,

wounded or dying . . . “

“Hospice care services are provided by a team of

health care professionals who maximize comfort for

a person who is terminally ill, by reducing pain and

addressing physical, psychological, social and

spiri-tual needs.”

I want to invite the family of any parishioners who

are facing terminal illness to let the parish

know when you begin hospice care. Often we are

called only in the last hours of a person’s life.

Hos-pice groups will call asking for “last rites” for your

loved one. Actually the last rites of church are still

often confused with the sacrament of the anointing of

the sick. The last rites really are the opportunity for

Viaticum and prayers of commendation. Viaticum is

food for the passage through death to eternal life.

The Rite is a chance to renew baptismal promises,

receive Holy Communion and receive an Apostolic

Pardon for the pardon of all past sins. If we know

that someone has entered hospice care it also gives

me, the deacons and Sr. Pat Kofron an opportunity to

visit along the way, and pray with you and your

loved ones.

In Christ,

Fr. John

We understand that weekends might be the most

we can do. There simply are not enough weekend

Masses in a calendar year for that to happen.

No Mass

stipends will be taken for Christmas, Easter,

Mother’s Day, or Father’s Day. Those Masses will

be offered for all of you, Our Parishioners.

Retired Religious

This weekend there is an envelope in your packet for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an opportunity for you to acknowledge the thousands of senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests for their faithful ser-vice. Today, many religious communities struggle to care for their elderly members. Elder sisters, brothers, and reli-gious order priests dedicated their lives to service and prayer, and some lack adequate retirement savings. In-creasing health-care costs and decreased income make it

difficult to provide necessary medical care, costly

medications and basic services. Please be as generous

as you can.

Dear Generous Parishioners:

With the Christmas season rapidly approaching, Seven Holy Founders St. Vincent de Paul Society will be changing the way we provide assistance to our local “Neighbors in Need”.

In order to more adequately meet the needs of our less fortu-nate neighbors and more closely match our gifts to their needed items, we are hoping to have each less fortunate ily personally adopted by an organization or a group of fam-ily/friends from SHF. Our hope is that we can have enough groups come forward to provide for all of our neighbors who come to us for assistance at Christmas.

For those of you who are not able to adopt a family or join a group but would still like to participate, we will have trees in the back of church with stars to purchase household items such as blankets, pillows, bath towels, kitchen items, diapers and gift cards. Thanks in advance for your continued gener-osity. If you have any questions or to sign up to adopt a family (either individually or as a group) please call Patty Papke at 680-3134.
