Dear prospective student,

At the University of Luxembourg, we are dedicated to preparing you for a successful career. We train global thinkers for the 21st century. Each of our Master programmes has been designed to correspond to the needs of the Luxembourg, European and global markets.

The Luxembourg job market is one of many very good reasons to study here: it is dynamic and

international. Take advantage of the opportunity to study in one of the capitals of Europe, which so many European institutions call their home, including the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Court of Auditors and the European Investment Bank. Benefit from studying in a leading financial centre, number two in the world for attracting investment funds. Take advantage of internship opportunities at one of the European institutions, at law firms with a global reach, at the “Big Four” consulting firms, at one of the country’s 140 banks or at innovative technology companies, such as SES, Amazon and many more.

Through our partnerships we offer opportunities to spend a semester abroad in the US, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Canada and all over Europe. This global reach is also reflected in our student body, which is cosmopolitan and multilingual, like Luxembourg itself.

Companies and law firms here seek highly qualified candidates. Upon graduation, you will have a competitive edge, having gained a bilingual degree in English and French (in most of our Masters). You may also wish to consider continuing your studies with one of our Doctoral programmes.

As a result of a competitive selection process, you will benefit from small class sizes and the high value we place on student-faculty interaction. Teaching staff includes professors from the University of Luxembourg, who have joined us from prestigious universities around the world and enjoy an excellent international reputation in their research areas, as well as practitioners, who hold strategic positions in their respective careers and bring their unique point of view and expertise to the classroom. We will offer you all the tools you need to enhance your potential and become globally trained professionals and critical thinkers. Join us and open up new horizons.

Welcome to the University of Luxembourg!

ABOUT THE FACULTY OF LAW,

ECONOMICS AND FINANCE

PARTNERS

The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (Faculté de Droit, d’Économie et de Finance – FDEF) at the University of Luxembourg offers a unique academic and research environment. The Faculty is surrounded by several European institutions based in Luxembourg, a vibrant international financial centre and a number of innovative industries, forming natural partners for the FDEF. These ties are supported by sponsored Chairs, privileged partnerships but also professionals from different fields teaching select courses on the Faculty’s academic, private and institutional programmes. The programmes are mostly bilingual (French and English), although a number of Master programmes are taught exclusively in English. Programmes are taught by 51 professors from 17 different countries. Students at FDEF represent 85 different nationalities and more than 40% of the University’s entire student body. The Faculty’s interna-tional profile is further strengthened by an extensive network of partnerships with over 25 leading univer-sities around the world.

The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance includes three research units - the Research Unit in Law (RUL), the Centre for Research in Economics and Management (CREA) and the Luxembourg School of Finance (LSF) - as well as two Doctoral Schools. We offer 11 Master degrees, three Bachelor degrees and three professional programmes. In 2015 five of our Master programmes were accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA), a quality label for teaching. The Faculty over the course of the last few years has actively sought out partnerships with companies with a view to developing new and promising areas of research further through the participation and expertise of external experts. The FDEF has gained the support of ATOZ for a Chair in International and European Tax Law, that of SES for a Chair in Space, Satellite Communication and Media Law and that of Deutsche Bank for a Chair in Finance. The most recent addition is a Chair in Financial Law specialised in Inclusive Finance with the support of ADA. Among others, institutional partnerships have been estab-lished with the EIB, Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, LISER and STATEC.

Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce

Following on from the success of the establishment of the Luxembourg Business Academy asbl and the foundation of the Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and the University of Luxembourg signed a four-year privileged partnership programme in 2014. The partnership is aimed at further developing Business Education within the University of Luxembourg based on research and development, educational programmes, knowledge transfer and exchange, and internships. The Chamber of Commerce and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance are both committed to enhancing student experience on existing programmes, supporting academic and professional exchange, as well as supporting research and teaching in Business Education, especially in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation, business administration, accounting and audit, and other topics related to Luxembourg’s economic attractiveness. The Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce was first founded in 1841 and continues to defend the business interests of its members today.

ADA Chair

Specialised in inclusive finance, Luxembourg non-governmental organisation ADA in 2014 signed a memorandum of understanding with the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance to fund the ADA Chair in Financial Law (Inclusive Finance). The Chair will contribute to teaching and research activities in the field of inclusive finance, with a view to giving the University of Luxembourg international visibility in this area. Annual conferences, publications and the launch of executive programmes in financial law relating to inclusive finance also form part of the cooperation. ADA stands under the patronage of Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, providing a range of sustainable banking products and financial services to poor populations, helping them finance their activities, save money, provide for their families and protect themselves from everyday life risks.

ATOZ Chair

Advisory company ATOZ and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance in July 2009 signed an agreement for the creation of a Chair for European and International Taxation. The ATOZ Chair aims to provide high quality teaching and research in the areas of international and European tax law, as well as connecting the Faculty with some of the challenges the Luxembourg economy is facing. Prof. Werner Haslehner in June 2015 was appointed the second ATOZ Chair, succeeding Prof. Alexander Rust. ATOZ is an independent Luxembourg-based advisory company offering a range of tax and corporate implementation services in sectors ranging from, but not limited to, private equity and real estate, venture capital, and consumer goods and services. • Master en Droit et Contentieux de l’Union Européenne (LL.M.)

Deutsche Bank Chair

Deutsche Bank Luxembourg S.A. in September 2010 announced that it would fund the Deutsche Bank Chair at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, in celebration of its 40-year anniversary in the country. Based at the Luxembourg School of Finance (LSF) the Chair specialises in research on banking and finance that finds application in the Luxembourg banking sector. Prof. Rajnish Mehra, world-renowned in the field of financial economics, in 2012 was appointed Deutsche Bank Chair of Finance. Deutsche Bank was the first German financial institution to arrive at the growing Luxembourg financial centre in 1970 and remains one of the country’s top banks today, offering services in areas as varied as private wealth management, international loans and agency services, treasury and global markets, and corporate services.

SES Chair

In 2010, the University of Luxembourg and global satellite operator SES S.A. entered into a partnership with the aim of developing Luxembourg as a centre of excellence and innovation for advanced Information Communications Technology in satellite systems. Prof. Mahulena Hofmann in September 2011 was appointed SES Chair in Space, Satellite Communication and Media Law at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, which forms a key part of this collaboration, contributing to existing media law research by integrating space law and global telecommunications issues. Additionally, the Chair works with the University’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). SES S.A. with its network of 56 geostationary satellites, teleports and offices around the globe, reaches around 99% of the world’s population, providing solutions to broadcast, telecom, corporate and government customers worldwide.

Clifford Chance

The Luxembourg branch of multinational law firm Clifford Chance supports the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance through a generous annual contribution to finance the FDEF’s moot court teams. Moot courts allow law students to practice and train their research and advocacy skills by giving them a hypothetical case, with arguments presented to a panel of judges. Students from the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance take part in a number of international moot court competi-tions every year, with great success so far. Clifford Chance opened its Luxembourg office in 2000 and today counts a team of 70 lawyers and eight partners, with particular strengths in the areas of M&A and corporate investment funds, regulatory, capital markets, finance and tax, but also offering services in real estate, employment, litigation and dispute resolution.

European Investment Bank

The European Investment Bank Group (EIB), which also includes the European Investment Fund, and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance cooperate in a number of areas, such as internships, teaching and research but also training of EIB staff, publications, and other professional collaborations and joint institutional initiatives. The mutually beneficial partnership helps both the EIB and the FDEF build on each other’s expertise and resources, profiting from each other’s proximity in the Luxembourg context. Founded in 1958, the EIB works towards implementing EU policy by providing finance and expertise for sound and sustainable investment projects. The European Investment Fund, specialised in SME risk finance, was established in 1994.

LISER

In October 2012, LISER (formerly CEPS) and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance agreed to cooperate on the development of PhD training. In particular, LISER agreed to host and supervise PhD candidates registered at the UL’s Doctoral School in Economics and Finance. When a PhD candidate is hosted by LISER, LISER’s researchers act either as a thesis co-supervisor or as a reference person. Through this joint development of PhD candidates, a wider collaboration of re-searchers of both institutions is encouraged. LISER is a Luxembourgish public research institute under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Its research focus lies in the field of social and economic policy including the spatial dimension.

STATEC

The cooperation agreement signed in December 2012 between STATEC and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance has the objective of promoting research studies related to the Luxembourg economy and its specificities. In particular, both parties agreed on cooperating on the training, hosting and supervision of PhD candidates. PhD candi-dates at the UL’s Doctoral School in Economics and Finance can be hosted by STATEC, with STATEC’s researchers acting either as a thesis co-supervisor or as a reference person. STATEC is the National Institute for Statistic and Economic Studies of Luxembourg. It coordinates the statistic system of Luxembourg. STATEC aims at producing statistical data, analysis and studies giving a detailed, reliable and objective picture of Luxembourg society.

MPI Luxembourg

The collaboration between the Max Planck Institute (MPI) and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) started in 2012, the year the Institute was established in Luxembourg. The collaboration came naturally as both institutions aim at creating a lively and attractive environment for research and teaching, and more specifically for law. To reach this common goal,

MPI and FDEF created links through exchange of expertise and knowledge, and by working together on research projects and teaching. Among other activities, they work together on supporting young academics in law to help foster the next generation of researchers. For example, PhD candidates at MPI are encouraged to enroll at the FDEF’s Doctoral School of Law. The Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law started its work in autumn 2012. This Institute is the first Max Planck Institute on legal matters outside of Germany.

MASTER EN DROIT BANCAIRE

ET FINANCIER EUROPÉEN (LL.M.)

The Master en Droit Bancaire et Financier Européen is one of the premier programmes in this field offered in continental Europe.

It focuses on the study of three essential pillars – banking law, securities and capital markets law, and investment funds law – in the framework of European Union law, Luxembourg law and comparative law. The teaching team includes academics and renowned practitioners, specialised in banking and financial law. Making use of modern and interactive teaching methods, blending individual study and team work, the programme combines the acquisition of basic concepts in the first semester and their practical application in the second semester through case-based learning developed by practitioners.

The first semester of the M2 is joint for all students in this specialisation, allowing students to obtain and master the basics of the three pillars of European banking and financial law. In the second semester, the M2 is split into two tracks. The general track aims to deepen and put into practice acquired knowledge, in particular in Luxembourg law and in comparative banking and financial law. The investment fund track offers students further specialisation in this field through the in-depth study of Luxembourg investment funds law, the different types of investment funds, but also a number of specific aspects (taxation, criminal law, rules of conduct etc.), and insights into comparative investment fund law and portfolio management.

MASTER IN EUROPEAN

PRIVATE LAW (LL.M.)

The Master in European Private Law is among the most innovative Master programmes in EU law. It focuses on the Europeanisation of private law sectors, covering key issues and allowing students to understand how national legislation on private law will evolve in the future.

The first semester is devoted to deepening the understanding of European integration and the interaction between EU law and national legal systems, followed by classes on the areas of private law that have been deeply Europeanised (company, labour, intellectual property, and banking and financial law). The second semester is dedicated to legal areas where the influence of European law is indirect but vivid (contract and tort law, law of family and persons, and procedural law).

Students are trained to evaluate legal issues in a unique way, encouraging analysis that goes beyond national jurisdictions in order to draw upon European legal sources, and to propose more innovative solutions. Private law is explored through case methods combined with a presentation of the relevant legal provisions. The programme mixes theoretical and practical approaches with students taught how to write memoranda and critical reviews of legislative documents and scholarly doctrines, as well as how to organise various legal events.

Students can further deepen their practical experience through monthly workshops with practitioners, a mandatory internship and by benefitting from the clinical programme offered by the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance – the Consumer Law Clinic – where they meet real clients with real problems.

MASTER IN ACCOUNTING

AND AUDIT

This Master’s degree course targets students who aim at pursuing a career in research in the field of accounting and auditing. It is also suitable for students who want to work in the field of finance or accounting or in the financial management of companies, or who wish to acquire the professional qualification of réviseur d’entreprises or become auditors in another EU member state. The Master offers not only practice-based training but also in-depth theoretical knowledge of the areas relevant to accounting and auditing practice in order to allow students to solve practical problems on a scientifically sound basis.

Contemporary teaching and learning arrangements are applied, which increasingly replace “traditional” front-of-class teaching. The course does therefore not stop at pure knowledge transfer but promotes independent problem solving, reflection, evaluation, analysis and the synthesis of specialist areas. Individual and high-quality support of students by lecturers is very important in this course. This is partly ensured by the low intake number of students.

The LSF is based on a worldwide network and counts internationally renowned financial experts as lecturers (e.g. from the INSEAD-Business School in Fontainebleau). Furthermore, students will follow a five-day tailor-made programme at the New York University Stern School of Business.
