Commonly used terms

Local database – An Access database created on every

RM server for storing the real-time information

Farm metric server – Interprets farm wide data and

deals with alerts

Metric – A trackable item that Resource Manager

measures for servers or applications. e.g. Memory available bytes

Resource Manager Application – An application which

(4)

Big Differences from RMS 1.x

 No code in common with RMS 1.x! RM2 is a complete

re-write

 No central database to configure (yet)

 Requires MetaFrame XPe

 SMS messaging

 Able to monitor instances of published and

non-published applications (software metering)

(5)

RM2

Architecture

IMA Event Messaging System

IMA Event Messaging System

(7)

RM2 Architecture

• MetaFrame XPe is a requirement

for any machine on which you wish

to install Resource Manager

• Resource Manager is installed to

every server that you wish to

(8)

Operation

(9)

Operation

 Monitors system counters, or “metrics”

 See default metric documentation

 Collects session and process data

 Produces Real-time graphs of metric

data

 Sends real-time alerts via E-mail,

(10)

 Each server maintains its own “real-time”

metric information in a local Access database

 Located in Program Files\Citrix\Citrix

Resource Manager\LocalDB\.

 Information is passed via IMA events to

the CMC upon request

 Metric data is written every 15 seconds for

a maximum of 48 hours (not configurable)

 Data older than 48 hours is purged

(11)

 Interprets metrics that apply to the entire

server farm i.e. application counts

 Only one farm metric server per farm

 More features to be added here later

 If the Farm Metric server is down or its

IMA service is not running, the CMC reports an error upon startup.

(12)

Licensing

 Resource Manager requires an XPe server

License

 RM2 can not be used to monitor

(13)

XPe interoperability mode

 There is no cross management of

platforms

 Resource Manager will not manage MF

(14)

Scalability

(15)

Server and application groups

 For ease of management servers and application can

The CMC

Interface

(17)

Select server metrics to monitor

 Default set of metrics are provided

 Metrics most valuable in calculating

(18)

Select server metrics to monitor

• Default thresholds already set

(19)

Application monitoring

 New feature, can be used to police software usage

(20)

Alerting – E-mail

 Can be used with any

X400 compliant e-mail system: Exchange, Lotus Notes…

 The specified MAPI server

must be an RM server running the Resource

Manager Mail service as a domain user account and have a Mail profile

(21)

Alerting - SNMP

 Send SNMP traps to third party SNMP applications

(Tivoli NetView, HP OpenView, CA Unicenter, etc.)

(22)

Alerting - SMS

 Use almost any mobile phone network worldwide

(23)

Alerting – Run Script on Red

 Powerful new feature lets you specify a
