TOPICS THIS MONTH

Ray Boaz continues the discussion of multiplexed displays for microcomputer

systems. This month he describes a hexadecimal readout that will be of

interest to anyone considering the design or modernization of a display.

Up to the minute news is provided by Pete Cornell's coverage of the

cassette standard proposed at the recent BYTE symposium. No doubt we

will see plenty of discussion about this standard in the immediate future.

Pete has the basic data for us in his article.

An original pot position digitizing idea is presented by John Schulein in

the Data File section. Try it for converting potentiometer positional

data to digital data for your programs.

CLUB MEETING NOVEMBER 12, 1975

Equipment demonstrations at this meeting of 1) TV Dazzler manufactured by

CROMEMCO, One First Street, Los Altos, CA 94022, 2) Video Display Module

manufactured by Processor Technology Company, 2465 Fourth Street, Berkeley,

CA 94710, and 3) IMSAI 8080 System manufactured by IMS Associated Inc.,

1922 Republic Avenue, San Leandro, CA 94577. If you missed the demonstrations

or don't have complete details on these items you may want to write the

manufacturers. Mention that you read about them in the HOMEBREW COMPUTER

CLUB NEWSLETTER.

PTC donated a four position expansion board (for an Altair) with four PC

card edge connectors to the club'to be raffled off. Dan Sokol donated an

8080 CPU IC to the raffle. Two tickets were drawn and the first winner got

his pick of the two items (he took the 8080) and the second winner got the

expansion board. Tickets were sold for

apeice and the raffle netted

around $40

which will be used to pay for the newsletter printing and mailing.

Bob Marsh (PTC) spoke of the happenings at the cassette tape standards

meeting attended by most of the manufacturers involved with the "home brew"

hobbyist computer market. Full coverage of this meeting will be described

in an upcoming article in BYTE magazine.

Steve Dompier moderated this meeting in the absence of Lee Felsenstein.

About 130 people were on hand for this meeting and lots of information

was exchanged by the group.

Marty Spergle announced the M&R ENTERPRISES modem Penny Whistle 103 should

be available for club members by the end of December. Marty also told us

This month a hexadecimal readout i s described f o r t h e same type of microcomputer. The one most i n t e r e s t i n g p o i n t i s how s i m i l a r they a r e . But, a l l multiplexed d i s p l a y systems a r e b a s i c a l l y t h i s c o n f i g u r a t i o n . The o c t a l c i r c u i t presented l a s t month i s a " r e a l " c i r c u i t , i t works a s shown. Fine d e t a i l s such a s p i n numbers, Vcc and ground connec- t i o n s , and very important power decoupling was n o t put on t h e l o g i c diagram, b u t t h i s information i s a l l a v a i l a b l e from t h e I C Data Sheets. Likewise, t h i s type of informa- t i o n i s n o t included on t h e hex c i r c u i t e i t h e r . This i s n o t a "construction plan," only a technique of how i t r e a l l y can be done. Oh w e l l , enough of t h a t

The same o s c i l l a t o r a s i n t h e o c t a l c i r c u i t i s shown h e r e but l i k e l y can be l e f t o u t s i n c e t h e microcomputer should have a clock t h a t may be used. A 7492 i s used on t h e counter s i n c e i t h a s a d i v i d e by 6 counter i n i t . NOTE t h a t t h e B-C-D outputs a r e r e - l a b e l e d A-B-C. The A f l i p - f l o p i s n o t used. The r e l a b e l e d A-B-C a r e connected t o t h e A-B-C i n p u t s on a l l t h e d a t a muxes and the d i g i t decoder. Only s i x i n p u t s of t h e d a t a muxes and s i x o u t p u t s of the d i g i t decoder a r e used s i n c e only s i x d i g i t s of d i s p l a y a r e r e q u i r e d f o r 16 address and 8 d a t a b i t s i n hexadecimal. Here a g a i n t h e counter r e q u i r e s no r e s e t s i n c e it d i v i d e s by s i x g i v i n g s t a t e s 0-5, the e x a c t requirement. The d a t a muxes a r e 74151 with only s i x of t h e e i g h t i n p u t s used. A s shown i n Table 1, the mux c h a r t , the number of b i t s map e x a c t l y t o t h e d a t a i n p u t s . No s p e c i a l decoding i s required a s i n t h e o c t a l c i r c u i t . The 7442, one of t e n decoders, h a s i n p u t D grounded s i n c e i t should always be low. Due t o t h e type of

segment decoder/driver (D/D) used the d i g i t enable l i n e s must be high and supply c u r r e n t f o r seven segments. T r a n s i s t o r switches a r e used t o do t h i s . The a c t i v e low output of t h e 7442 t u r n s on a t r a n s i s t o r which s u p p l i e s t h e high l e v e l and c u r r e n t required. The pull-up r e s i s t o r on the d i g i t decoder output l i n e s i n s u r e t h e off

t r a n s i s t o r s a r e indeed r e a l l y o f f . The segment D / D i s a F a i r c h i l d 9370, which i s an a c t i v e low, o p e n - c o l l e c t o r o u t p u t , hexadecimal d e c o d e r l d r i v e r a b l e t o s i n k

25 mAmp/ output. It decodes hex numbers 0-9, A, b y C , d , E , and F. Since i t i s a c t i v e low,

i t can only d r i v e common anode readouts; t h e r e f o r e , t h e requirement of t h e t r a n s i s - t o r switch discussed e a r l i e r . The r e s i s t o r s i n s e r i e s with t h e segment D/D output l i n e s a r e used f o r c u r r e n t l i m i t i n g and s e t t h e b r i g h t n e s s of the d i s p l a y . Segment D I D output l i n e s connect t o like-segment i n p u t s on each d i g i t , a - a , b-b,

...,

f - f , and g-g. The 9370 enable l i n e (E) must be grounded f o r multiplexed o p e r a t i o n . A l l t h a t ' s l e f t i s t h e LED readouts. They simply l i g h t up a s they a r e turned on by t h e d i g i t and segment e n a b l e - l i n e s .

Figure 1 i s a comparison between t h e common cathode type LED d i g i t of t h e o c t a l c i r c u i t and t h e common anode type LED d i g i t described h e r e . Shown i s one output of t h e 7448 going t o one segment of t h e d i g i t and one open c o l l e c t o r output of t h e 74145. When t h a t segment of t h a t d i g i t i s on t h e c u r r e n t determined by R l i g h t s . t h a t diode. The 7448 i s a c t i v e high; t h a t i s , when t h e output i s h i g h , the LED i s

forward b i a s e d and on; when t h e output i s low, t h e t r a n s i s t o r i s a low impedance path t o ground and i t s i n k s c u r r e n t away from t h e LED, thereby keeping i t turned o f f . The common anode c i r c u i t shows one 2N5139 d i g i t switch and one 9370 segment output. When t h a t d i g i t and t h a t segment a r e t o be on t h e 9370 output goes low, the 2N5139

i s turned on by t h e 7442 o u t p u t going low, and t h e LED l i g h t s up t o a b r i g h t n e s s determined by t h e c u r r e n t passed by r e s i s t o r R.

RATIONALE:

Bandwidth: C h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o f many low c o s t c a s s e t t e r e c o r d e r s l i m i t a c c e p t a b l e performance t o t h e 300 - 3000 H e r t z r a n g e . O u t s i d e t h i s r a n g e a m p l i t u d e r o l l - o f f and p h a s e s h i f t may b e u n a c c e p t a b l e .

Modulation: The proposed method i s s e l f - c l o c k i n g and i s t o l e r a n t o f speed v a r i a t i o n i n e x c e s s o f 2 30%, more t h a n a d e q u a t e f o r even t h e c h e a p e s t r e c o r d e r s . The c o n s t a n t p r e s e n c e o f e i t h e r 2400 o r 1200 Hertz keeps t h e r e c o r d e r ' s AGC c i r c u i t happy.

Mark: S i n c e t h e marking s t a t e p r e c o n d i t i o n s t h e S t a r t b i t s y n c h r o n i z a t i o n , i t s h o u l d b e unambiguous w i t h r e g a r d t o b i t c e l l framing. The TV Dazzler system design has been frozen for several weeks now and

the goal for the first shipments is set for December 15th. A club dis-

count will be available if 50 people get together to buy these units.

Someone needs to handle this.

Computer stores are opening. The BYTE SHOP, 1061 El Camino Real, Mountain

View, CA will open December 8, 1975 with the complete MITS line. Another

store (different management) will open in Berkeley but we don't have details.

Gordon French is using the INTEL floating point package on his 8008 system

with excellent results.

CALL COMPUTER reports 34 members currently using the K200 account (last

months newsletter has details on the K200 account). Also, CALL COMPUTER

has a new addition, aDATA GENERAL ECLIPSE C300 with many new capabilities

beyond those previously available.

HOLIDAY CLUB MEETING SCHEDULE

The next club meeting is December 10, 1975 at Stanford Linear Accelerator

Center, Menlo Park, CA. No club meeting will be held December 24, 1975.
