COMMUNITY NEWS

14 October 2021 Issue 262 Mapleton and surrounds, Queensland

LET’S HAVE SOME FUN—IN YOUR STREET, IN YOUR HOME

WEEDING MAKEOVER AT TOSH GARDEN

Twelve volunteers, one from as far as Flaxton, rocked up to The Old School House (TOSH) garden last Saturday morning for a well

needed weeding working bee.

In a few short hours, the worst of the weeds were removed, hedges trimmed and leaves raked onto garden beds for mulch.

The volunteer working bees help keep this small public garden neat and tidy so we can enjoy the serenity of the Lilyponds and

the antics of the wildlife.

MAPLETON COMMUNITY LIBRARY BOOK SALE AND MINI MARKET

Thank you to all contributors. Financially: over $2,000 profit.

But COMMUNITY wise—we raised millions.

The event offered opportunity to Blackall Range Lions to offer service to the community and gather new members; the Blackall Range Probus Club ran a very successful stall sharing

not only their own promotion but promotion for many of our community organisations; Range Community Gym and Fitness

Centre sold raffle tickets to celebrate their 20th year and to further their services to the community for another 20 years and

local businesses such as The Falls Farm and Pat and Di Egan sold their wares.

The Library is your Library offering a place to read, a place to relax, a place for workshops and a place to find community

information and JP services.

ESPRESSO MARTINI

Ingredients

1 shot vodka (45ml) 1 shot Kahlua

1 shot espresso coffee, freshly brewed and cooled (or cold brew concentrate)

½ shot of simple syrup (sugar dissolved in water, once bought to the boil allow to cool)

 Add vodka, Kahlua, espresso coffee and simple syrup to a shaker filled with ice and shake until well-chilled

 Strain into a chilled cocktail glass

 Garnish with 3 coffee beans

(Ingredients can be varied to taste, for example, some prefer 2 shots of vodka, others prefer more espresso coffee.)

Who attended the ‘The Night at the Opera’?

This martini was one of the many treats on the night. The organisers thought there would be only a few takers but the

above martini is so delicious everyone accepted and emptied their glasses.

And you thought a library was just a place full of old books … ...

The Library does need a TREASURER.

Support will be available to settle you into this volunteer role.

And may be an odd martini on the side ...

Please consider. To find out more email [email protected]

Mapleton Bowls Club is again this week building for another bumper Friday and Saturday of

Events.

It all starts on the night of Friday 15 October with our famous

‘Dinner Night’ where you will find the best value and quality on the Hinterland with Steaks, Seafood and Special Home Cooked Meals and all for under $20.00. To wash it all down, you can choose from our range of Beers, Wine, Spirts and Soft Drinks at the keenest prices going.

Saturday is a special day for the club. Our division 7 Men’s Pennants Teams will be playing in the finals down the coast, at Kawana Waters, after coming second in the full season. We wish them good luck.

Some time ago we were invited to nominate our club as a Men’s pennants finals venue. The Management Committee decided to put our club forward for this. On Monday this week we were gifted the opportunity of holding finals across two Divisions right here at Mapleton Bowls Club. What a win for the club, this is to be the first pennants finals to be held at Mapleton and fitting that this is happening in our 75th Anniversary year.

This will be an exciting day for the club, as we are expecting around 100 bowlers on the day with the first games commencing at 9am and continuing throughout the afternoon.

I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the Members, Bar Kitchen staff who will provide the essential assistance to ensure this is a memorable event.

Please note the full green is required for pennants there will be no social bowls this Saturday.

Please note that given the recent heavy rain, the green will be closed on Friday, therefore there will be no roll-ups on Friday.

If you are able, please come along to see the action this Saturday.

[email protected] CHARGING MOBILE PHONES

Now that we are all so dependent on our mobile phones, have you considered how you can charge your phone if we lose power for several days?

One option is to buy a power bank. These devices are effectively batteries that you can use to charge mobile phones, cameras and laptops. Prices range from as little as $5 (don’t bother) upwards and as usual you get what you pay for.

Power banks need to be charged from your normal 240V outlet and will stay charged for a couple of months. The more expensive models will recharge a mobile phone several times and have multiple outlets so you can charge a couple of phones at once.

Be aware that Apple and Android devices may need different power banks so best to do your homework and check before you buy. As usual, try your power banks and phones when there is no emergency on the horizon so you will be ready when there is.

Keep Friday 3rd December free so that you can see how the design eventually works.

There at least four artists from the Range exhibiting so do drop in while you are in Brisbane.

The painting above is by a north Queensland beginning artist—so the standard is high.

You might find that special gift.

RECYCLING IN MAPLETON

SPECTACLES ARE COLLECTED BY LIONS AT THE MAPLETON COMMUNITY LIBRARY AND MAPLETON BOWLS CLUB.

The Mapleton Bowls Club is collecting bottles and cans with the refunds going to sponsor an event at the Club. There is a convenient collection point which is a wheelie bin placed at the foot of the entry stairs. This bin can be distinguished from others as it has a round hole in its roof where you can pop-in the recycle items.

QLD container refund scheme in the school car park. All proceeds go to the Mapleton State School P & C. All your donations would be gratefully received and will go towards resources for our school and students.

Mapleton Men’s Shed is also a receiving depot for recycling cans and bottles. These may be left in the sulo bins in front of the storage shed in Mapleton Forest Drive.
